Dominic White posted:To this day, a lot of people still haven't figured out the proper technique to using the BFG. You need to treat it like the SSG, but much bigger, and with a far wider cone of fire. It does pitifully low damage if you're just slugging away at enemies at long range, but you can one-shot the spider mastermind if you smack it point-blank, as it's a wide enough target to effectively catch the full power of the blast. This doesn't work nearly as well in Brutal Doom, but the spider's brain is much more vulnerable to direct damage, to it's safer to engage at range. To be fair, the graphic doesn't really explain/match the way the gun works, its poor conveyance. The original design for that weapon was to shoot out tons and tons of plasma balls in rapid succession, like a plasma shotgun, which would have been much better conveyance but was technically infeasible, so they changed it to the big boom. Which looks cool, but makes you think it works like a super rocket launcher; I've always used it that way myself. But you're absolutely right, its a super-supershotgun. I'm going to go BFG a spider mastermind in the face now, kthx.

Oh, fully agreed that it doesn't work in any intuitive fashion - it looks like a great big rocket launcher that seems to do a secondary, invisible wave of damage to everything in the room. You either need to experiment a lot, or be told outright how it's actually functioning. Once you do know the secret, it's ridiculously powerful. If you've got nerves of steel, you can two-shot the Cyberdemon too.

Thanks for that! Would it be possible to modify the BFG to visually indicate when the secondary shots fire and where they travel to/from? Maybe with lasers that hang in the air for a few seconds before disappearing. That would be a helpful teaching aid. Wonder if anyone's ever made a wad that does that.

For the uninitiated, the Quake 2 BFG functions a lot like the Doom BFG in the sense that it launches a slow moving ball of energy. The difference is that, as it travels, the Quake 2 version shoots out beams of energy that lock onto nearby enemies and deal additional damage. I also think the ball terminates in an area effect explosion, which can damage multiple enemies (unlike the Doom BFG).

I like the BFG because there isn't really another weapon like it in DM. The ball is a great diversionary tactic while you run up a hallway you want to hit with the tracers. Some maps yield themselves to wild shenanigans involving tracers firing out from behind you. It is a great weapon with varied tactics. I'm pretty sure the BFG ball causes splash damage. I always learned that there are 3 ways to get killed by the BFG: direct hit, splash, and tracers, in that order.

The projectile itself doesn't do much, but the beams (and you get more if you overcharge the weapon) murder just about everything.

If the BFG is fired so that multiple balls arrive at the same time will it create all the rays for each ball or are all but the last ball's rays cancelled out?

I see. I'm guessing this isn't something skulltag added either? I might have just been misreading http://www.gamers.org/docs/FAQ/bfgfaq/#3A as they refer to the tracers as "the blast area."

Another fun BFG fact, if you fire the BFG ball and subsequently die before the BFG ball explodes, your corpse will still radiate the BFG tracers. Not too useful in singleplayer, but in multiplayer it can be used to do fun suicide BFG runs into large crowds of people, as well as getting revenge on someone who just killed you. Just don't respawn, it only works as long as you are looking through your corpse's eyes.

There was some absolutely deplorable FPS "game" which used voice clips ripped from Dark Forces and weapon sprites ripped from somewhere so lamely that the pure black pixels had become transparent, so there were holes in the gun at absurd places. The engine was Wolfenstein-like without the smoothness, and the gameplay was bullshit. Kinda like Isle of the Dead, but even worse. I mean, this is Isle of the Dead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7_fiGbKKVQ What I'm talking about was done less competently than Isle of the Dead. Anybody has any idea what this gem of failure was? Browsing through Youtube vids, I found this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBgrMXhf3eo Didn't watch to the end, but it doesn't seem too bad. I wonder why I never heard about it back then...

Killing Time was a bizarre game. It's like they took something like 7th Guest and made it a first person shooter which I thought was pretty rad back in the day. The was advertised in all the PC gaming rags pretty heavily and I remember the graphics being pretty crisp for the time.

This isn't quite an FPS but I think it's pretty representative of terrible first person 3D games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaNCAUtwxKQ Note that that music and the video itself are in fact what the company intended to have for a demo, not some random youtuber making one! I could swear this engine was repurposed into some other forgettable actual FPS. Edit: Forgot to mention, the original DEMO.AVI for this was on one of my Doom level CDs from the 90s, although obviously I didn't upload it for youtube myself.
