Cross posting from TFR, since I suspect this thread will be interested in the topic... Tom Hanks, Spielberg, and Graham Yost are in the process of putting together another WWII miniseries for HBO, this one is about the 8th AF. This is going to be Band of Brothers: B-17 edition. It's going to loving own, calling it already. Like I don't think I can describe the chubby I already have for this show, and I just heard about it today and it's probably still at least a year+ out from airing.

If they ever do, I hope they have that apocryphal joke the Germans were rumored to tell after 1943: "How do you tell English, American, and Luftwaffe planes apart?" "English are painted brown, Americans are silver, and the Luftwaffe is invisible" A thousand-plane raid must have been a terrible thing to experience. Having the sky thrumming day & night, with flaming wreckage and AA shells raining all over the place, fires, the heat; the sound. Christ. Hell on earth.

(Seriously, he was an avowed National Socialist until the day he died.) IIRC he wasn't actually consulted on the A-10 design, the dudes that were writing the A-X requirements (program that begat the A-10) read his book Stuka Pilot to give them some idea of what a good anti-tank aircraft needed to look like, specifically the -G tank busting Stuka variant with the underwing podded 37mm cannons.

Let me just take this opportunity to say that even though I'm a Navy guy I love the A-10. Such a cool freaking airplane. Sadly, I was flying in an exercise at Nellis one year where one flew into a mountain on the range. Sad to hear that comm over the radios.

On a similar note, I want to get this guy a forums account. http://www.superarrow.ca/ Why do this? quote:“My reasoning for doing this is simple. When Prime Minister Harper and cabinet simply made the call to sole source the F-35, and flatly turned down the rebuild of the Avro Arrow as Gen Lewis MacKenzie pitched, it sent a signal that he simply does not believe in Canadians that we can actually do design and build something like this. Notwithstanding its still superior to the F-35 in performance, range, speed and maneuverability, their argument was that it was too old. When the Conservatives took blow torches to the original Avro Arrow, they gutted the dreams of this nation and it seems we are reliving that again in todays times and I wanted to do my part by inspiring a nation.”
