I finished reading "Necropolis" today, and can now see why everyone who makes a list of essential 40k books put the Gaunt series on it. It was a great read, from both the action scenes to the political intrigue bits. I was worried that all the characters I liked were going to die off before the end of the book, but they didn't, so I just assume it is now going to be a slow attrition of them throughout the rest of the series. Their campaign is the most hilarious thing to come out of the Warhammer series, and if you haven't played it, either get it next time it pops up on sale or watch some clips of it on youtube.

Why the gently caress can't the Black Library Write one decent book about the Dark Angels? I am guessing there will eventually be a third dark angels book? All the two books have taught me is that, The Lion is socially awkward, and Caliban is a death trap.

They are newly founded, their primarch is pretty much retarded, doesn't see the splintering in his legion thats right in front of him, effectively makes it worse, and then hands over the keys to some super weapons to the massacre. Even if its written in the wikia for the Lion to return would it be a good thing? The Lion makes everything worse.

It was one of the earliest published stories and was pretty awesome. The Horus Heresy take on the Lion and the Dark Angels kinda suck.

From what I've read, the Dark Angels don't deserve the accolades that they think should be awarded to them, and we're told the Lion is this brilliant and strong commander but he never really does anything noteworthy (except punch out Leman Russ). I wish they had more competent authors who fleshed them out as remotely-likeable beings. I guess the Silver Skulls fill in the Native American Marines role but they aren't very good, either.

Warhammer monthly had an issue of a Terminator who went back to his home planet and discovered it was overrun by Genestealers which was Native American themed. But I don't recall the comic giving away the Chapter he was apart of. Warhammer Monthly also had a whole issue (Warped Visions iirc) dedicated towards reversing the Fantasy/40k stories from earlier issues that was all kinds of hilarious.

It's dark Angels in that story, which is why the death wing had te feathers and such (before every DA had huge feathers everywhere). Part of their coolness back in the day was that they had multiple different recruiting worlds which created variety within the chapter. I remember years ago the ravenwing also had a very cool native American feel to them, which I think has now been replaced with the increased focus on hunting the fallen

I finised Eisenhorn. I have something to ask. What books other than Eisenhorn give a good look at ordinary life in the Imperium? Is Ravenor all cloak and dagger or Gaunt all military action, or do we get civilian drama in there too?

You do get the occasional glimpse of non-IG life in the Gaunt's Ghosts series. You might also enjoy the Shira Calpurnia novels, which take place in a hive.

Brothers of the Snake has a story set in a feudal world, featuring a civilian main character.

Ravenor is much the same as Eisenhorn really undercover work in hives, with the odd alien cameos and a whole lot less daemonhosts. As already stated the Shira Calpurnia omnibus is about an arbites officer doing, basically police work in a hive. As for Angel of Fire, it was a OK book I guess, but my only gripe was we were told constantly how awesome Macharius is, how wonderful he was, how made you feel awesome and blah blah. You don't really read anything to back up this opinion we're supposed to have of him. I've fallen so far behind as of late with books to read, as my local Blackwells has gone to poo poo with getting new black library stock in, betrayer, angel exterminatus, flesh of cretacia, the greater good; the list goes on

A couple weeks ago I finished the Night Lords trilogy, and goddamn, all the praise for that series is more than well-deserved. I don't think there was a single weak or dull moment across all three books. All the characters stood out from each other and were entertaining as well as memorable, and the ending was perfect, if not a little bittersweet. (Void Stalker) Even though the Night Lords did some horrific poo poo, especially in that book, it was still sad to see them go. All of it happened because Talos desperately wanted to give meaning to himself and his Legion.  As inhuman as he was, it's not hard to understand Talos's desire to avoid having his brothers remain as raiders with no meaning or long-term desires. I also enjoyed the relationship between Xarl and Talos. They had a lot of hate and resentment for each other, but they still felt the most like brothers to me. Their bonds were definitely the deepest in the story, which I guess is expected because of their past. Those two alone sold me on how even though Chaos Marines are infamous traitors, they can still keep their deep bonds with their legion brothers (well, some can). I would highly recommend the trilogy to anyone in this thread who hasn't read them yet. I think I enjoyed it more than Eisenhorn.I recently got started on the Horus Heresy, too. That's because they take legendary figures (i.e. the Primarchs) and humanize them with their own flaws and foibles. It's quite amazing when they turn mere footnotes in history (in the context of mainline 40k) and turn them into novel-length epics. The entire series is also steeped in dramatic irony.
