For the record, 1/2 cup of popcorn kernels makes enough popcorn for multiple people. I should have used 1/4 cup.

Then on that note, what cooking oils do add flavor?

In addition to the oils already mentioned, mustard oil has a very sharp flavour that mellows with cooking. Coconut oil also has a mild flavour of its own.

Peanut oil, despite being (effectively) flavourless, is interesting because of its high smoke point, making it good for high-temperature stir-frying and whatnot.

This is embarrassingly dumb, but how would I find the average length of a group of lobsters when there are multiple lobsters in each length division? I'm trying to answer a question for my marine biology class and it involves finding the average length of a population of lobsters, and I'm just now realizing that I have no idea how to do this.

Here's my lobster data:

I don't necessarily need the answer, I just need to know how to go about finding the average.

Multiply # of lobsters x mm of that lobster class.

Add up total mm

Divide by total lobsters

Dip answer in garlic butter, enjoy.

Baby, I've had all my shots and I'm fine
Last April, I signed up for a 2 year contract with my cable company. It saved $50 a month from my bill, but carries an early termination fee of $200. I figured it was worth it; I didn't plan to be living here that long, and due to the savings it would pay for itself in four months.

As best as I can tell, in August of last year, they started caring about bandwidth usage.

In December, I got a phone call asking if I really was using 700gb of bandwidth a month, when my quota is 250gb. This was the first I'd heard of it.

Now, if I upgrade to faster internet, my quota also jumps. So I thought, I would do that. And according to their website, I can get their fastest internet for only $40/month. I'm currently paying $45 for their slowest. (the rest of my bill is of course TV and phone) When I called to inquire about this, they said that I can't upgrade to the fastest tier and still stay on my contract; I can only go for a midlevel tier that isn't worth the effort.

So I'm wondering: Since I started the contract before they started policing usage (I haven't gotten charged for overages yet but the fact that they called indicates they intend to at some point), wouldn't this constitute a substantial change in previously expected service that could cause me to get out of paying the EFT and switch my net up to the best tier? Would that qualify if and when they charge me for an overage?

Edit: Hah, never mind, I read the fine print: "Usage allowances apply to new customers and those existing customers who make changes to their Internet service levels as of 08/01/2012." So, okay, at least I know I won't be charged for that. I can live with that. Time to open up the bandwidth spigots and flood out the neighborhood.

Illustrations of plants and animals in biology textbooks are generally based on a sampling of many specimens to produce a depiction of a typical specimen - average size, shape, and color, with no unusual deformities or mutilation. What is the technical term for this kind of illustration? I forget the name.

Yes, but when you do a technical illustration of an animal or plant, you're expected to draw a typical example of one. Since, like humans, individuals of a species all look at least a little different from each other, you examine a bunch of them and try to construct sort vision of what a typical individual would look like. What is the proper term for this "typical specimen"?

I've read through the foreword and intro of the animal encyclopedia I've had forever without spotting a specialized term for this or any substantial explanation. The problem with encyclopedias is that they are kind of expected to dictate rather than speculate. Though they don't tell how they calculated it--how many specimens were measured before they decided to call it a day--they acknowledge that genetic diversity exists and that they cannot be comprehensive (just look at how many different features can be found in cat and dog breeds), and leave it up to the consultants' best judgment. Of course they offer ranges of sizes.

So, for random example, Baron Bifford, the sperm whale is estimated/averaged at 11-30m, the pygmy sperm whale at 3-3.4m, and dwarf sperm whale at 2.4-2.7m.

One more edit: You're sure there's a term since you forgot it, so I really hope someone turns up what you're looking for.

Where can I buy a gear that has the same dimensions and number of teeth as this one but has a bigger shaft hole to fit the new motor (third pic)?

alnilam

Weighing in a bit late on the oil thing, but sesame oil and butter both have low smoke points. This is why in e.g. a stir fry, people usually add sesame oil (for flavor) halfway through cooking with another oil.

As popcorn oil gets pretty hot, I don't recommend using either of those, or olive oil for that matter. In desperate times of canola oil scarcity, I've cooked popcorn in olive oil - it's okay but it always ends up a little burny.

Canola, vegetable, soybean, and safflower/sunflower oils are all quite interchangeable, IMO.

edit, re: gear teeth
There are other gear characteristics than major diameter and teeth number that affect gear compatibility, so be careful.
Try Misumi. I don't know how amenable they are to selling single parts though - they're more of an industrial supplier I think, but go look there and maybe I'm wrong and it's easy to buy single parts.

What Bifford is looking for doesn't officially have a name, as far as I know, but this is the best term to fit an illustration of a typical specimen. Not to be confused with any of the other designations for a "typical" specimen.

Sesame oil is also bad for that application because the flavors are fairly volatile, meaning when you heat it up the flavor ends up in the air and not in your food.

Coconut oil is what was traditionally used for movie theater popcorn, and will give it that flavor that its missing. Order some Flavacol from amazon and you'll have everything you need for movie quality popcorn.

Why though does a guy does a guy actively holding a 5 year old kid in a box underground in front of people still get the "suspect" label?

If you as a citizen witness a bank robbery can you accurately say "the robber ran that way." If a cop witnesses it, can he accurately say "robber ran that way" or does suspect have to be used there too?

You answered it yourself. "Innocent until proven guilty, in a court of law". In your bank robber example, if two guys go into a bank wearing a red shirt and jeans, one of them robs a teller and both run out at the same time and in opposite directions, how do you know which person the eyewitness saw? The robber, or the unfortunate bystander? The cop is trained to use the term suspect.

In your kidnapper example, the man is still a suspect, but he faces overwhelming evidence that he did what he is accused of. He could deny it all the way from arrest up to conviction, but until he is found guilty, he's just a suspect.

Unless you can get in contact with the manufacturer, you're probably out of luck. You could try a local machine shop and see if they can make you a replacement, but something that small and that intricate made on demand is probably going to cost a fair bit.

Yeah, this is probably firmly in the DIY arena. A 3d printer could probably make something that would work, but the difficulty there would be in getting the CAD design put together, or whatever the printer uses to make the item. If that one you're holding is OK aside from the center hole being too small, it might be easier to modify that one. Either mill it out somehow, or maybe heat the motor shaft/some other metal rod of the same diameter and melt the plastic. Either of those methods would require a fair amount of precision to ensure you're gear isn't going to be off-center, however.
