kuddles posted:I never said that it must be either/or. I just mentioned that those scenes in Minority Report were supposed to make the ads feel intrusive, and then countered against someone who claimed that the Subway episode wasn't intentional product placement. Whether you think either works as "satire" is up for debate, but frankly I think that debate is growing increasingly unlikely, as the amount of media at this point that has gladly accepted product placement money while claiming to be subversive about it has been ridiculously high. In Community's case, aside from in my opinion of it being a rather unfunny episode in general, it wasn't like the creators decided to write the episode first and confirm the brand later, or being forced to do it and turning it into something that would piss the company off, but rather they accepted the deal with the company and made 22 minutes of people constantly talking about the brand, mentioning the slogan and eating the food, with some random jokes thrown in - in an episode that never would have been ever conceived otherwise. I'm positive that's how the Community episode came about. Product placement is almost by definition foisted upon the writers unwillingly. Not sure why that means their particular take on it isn't satirical. You seem to be saying the Minority Report usage is somehow less effective placement because the particular subversion was to make them intrusive instead of over-the-top silly but I don't see any difference at all. The respective brands still got significant and prominent screen time while the audience got to feel like they're in on the joke. Welcome to media subversion in capitalism! It's more bark than bite.

Has it been mentioned yet that Sergei Eisenstein's Strike is now available as well? Also, Harakiri, but there's an error. Netflix lists it as the 1962 film by Kobayashi, but it's actually Fritz Lang's 1919 silent of the same name.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is now on Instant Watch. If you haven't seen it yet, go do so. It's one of the better coming-of-age films I've seen, and is really funny to boot. I'm sure someone else can better describe why it's such a great movie, but do yourself a favor and watch it.

The movie was made in 1986. It's 27 years old and still funny. Just watch it.

Really makes you feel old to know that their entire frame of reference is a good 15+ years removed from your own. They only know him as Inspector Gadget. tl;dr - people age, as do cultural touchstones

They could've said "he was on that Two and a Half Men show". Then you could've stepped in and said "Ferris Bueller is not Duckie", and things would've gotten really awkward.

Warner Bros. is starting their own streaming service, Warner Archive Instant. It's in beta, but they seem to have a form you can fill out for updates. It's looking really good so far - not the entire library is up, but a quick skim shows films like A Face in the Crowd, Gun Crazy, Freaks, Until the End of the World, Day For Night, Blow-Up, and The Loved One all in HD. Lots of others in SD and HD. I'd imagine there's a lot of others to be added eventually. FYI, Warner's library includes nearly all films with their namesake (other than the odd distributor-only films like Rope and Hondo), almost all Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer before 1986, RKO Radio Pictures, Allied Artists, plus distribution rights to Samuel Goldwyn Films. This could go places. Egbert Souse fucked around with this message at 01:57 on Feb 5, 2013 |

You'll still be paying the cable or FIOS company money, plus 5+ streaming services. We'll howl for the days of Netflix supremacy at $8/month

Wonder how much they'll integrate it with TCM, probably with a link on the website at least.

If I could have streaming services right now it probably wouldn't be more than 3 or 4 services that I would actually want (basing it on the 3 or 4 currently existing channels I am actually interested in). I can't justify paying a full cable bill price for 200 channels when I only want to watch those 3 or 4. However, I'd gladly pay 10 bucks (or whatever) a month for a single channel like Discovery or something. So yeah, let me legitimately pay for the entertainment that I want and not for the stuff I don't want.

If anybody's looking for a half-decent action movie from the 90s, I recommend Sudden Death starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. It's basically Die Hard in a hockey arena, and it makes great use of all the different locations; the kitchen, the stands, the luxury booth, on top of the dome, the locker rooms, underneath with the pipes and poo poo, and even on the ice. Also the cinematography looks pretty good for an action movie. It's a lot better than I remembered it being. Powers Boothe is great as the villain and most of the action scenes are really good
