These same awful depressive mood swing symptoms happened to me on all of the pills I have taken.

It really is awful. I got anxiety too. All of it combined to a very miserable me and a very confused/concerned boyfriend.

It sucks for my boyfriend, I keep telling him I'm not upset or sad or mad or anything but I can tell that he's getting frustrated with how easily I cry.
Can you still think/talk normally and everything? My then-boyfriend was concerned before I figured out what was going on, but eventually I wound up being like "I'm not upset, just ignore this bullshit water on my face" and it was fine. I think he just had to realize that instead of being upset, I was just exasperated by the bullshit water, too.

Honestly, for me this has been the one downside so far of getting the Paragard (that and the monster cramps). The pill always evened out my mood swings and makes my PMS disappear completely. It's been a stressful month anyway and then my emotions have been out of control lately between adjusting to no pills and having PMS big time again. Once I made the connection, I'm feeling better but I felt like I was losing my mind for a few days there.

I do have a question though. Does it take a few cycles for the really heavy periods to start with the copper IUD? Because I'm on my first one pill-free and so far it's only been slightly worse flow-wise than my normal period off the pill. I'm cautiously optimistic that I may have lucked out on this. I was also pleasantly surprised that it came right on schedule so soon after stopping the pill (well 25 days instead of the textbook 28).

Yeah, that's not the problem really. It's just that I'm stressed right now otherwise so a mix of that with crying at everything makes it hard to explain why 'yes, I'm upset, but this wouldn't make me cry usually, so it's not as big a deal as it seems I'm making it'

He's been more understanding after we starting talking more in general, so that's good.

I may have spoken a little too soon since things are a little worse today. But still nowhere near the "I filled a super-plus tampon in an hour" stuff that I was kind of expecting. I've also been taking ibuprofen and vitamin E which supposedly helps, so maybe there's something to it.

Honestly the worst part has been the cramps (which were gone after a day) and that moment when you first stand up in the morning after being on your back all night. :gonk:

So it seems like I'm one of those ladies who bleeds constantly on the progestin- only pill. I have been bleeding at various levels (period-heavy or just spotting) for an entire packet and I am pretty sick of having to go and check what kind of blood situation I am dealing with before I have sex (my boyfriend doesn't really mind, but warning is only fair). I just started a new packet and if I don't stop bleeding through the whole packet I am gonna stop, but I am concerned it is not so good for me to be bleeding so much, all the time. Even when it eases up, it usually is only clear for a handful of days.

How long have you been on the pill? Also, call your doctor.

e: n/m, post stalked you. Early/Mid-October, yes? That's definitely beyond the 3 month thing, so yeah, it sounds like that might just be what you do on progestin :\ If you're concerned about your health with the bleeding constantly, you should definitely talk to your doctor and see what s/he thinks. Unless you have anemia I doubt it's a problem, but peace of mind is worth millions.

Birth control-wise, I guess the next step would be to think about if you want to try a lower dose thing like Implanon (still progestin, amount decreases as you go), or Mirena (20mcg/day). There's also the new hormonal IUD called Skyla (14mcg/day). Paragard is also a great option if you want to get away from hormones entirely.

I had this problem for a while with the progestin-only pill. Not fun. Finally it occurred to me that it could be the fact that I was taking it first thing, on an empty stomach. (Derp! In my defense, it made it easy to remember to take it at the same time every day...)

I switched to taking it around 5 p.m., and the spotting went away almost completely. ("Almost" meaning there are times when it's happened on and off since then, but no longer constantly/at a level that inconveniences or worries me the way it had been.) If you haven't tried taking it at a different time of day, that might be something to consider.

I never thought time of day could have any kind of impact. I'm taking it every night before I go to sleep - time varies a little, but I am taking the intermediate dose one, Cerazette (which might be making it worse) so I have a larger window of reliability. I will try taking it at a different time of day for a bit and then consider alternatives.

Outta my way, ya dumb rah-rah!
Do any of you ladies have any experience with ovarian cysts while being on birth control?

I went to my (awesome as all hell) GP 2 weeks ago with pelvic pain--nothing abysmal, just what felt like bad period cramps for two weeks while I was not having my period. The exam ended up being scream inducing painful, I got sent to the ER and they ultrasounds found a large complex cysts on my right ovary that hard partially ruptured. Two days after that, I had a massive uptick in pain and went back to the ER, where they observed that the cyst hadn't ruptured further (yay!) but it had grown larger (boo!).

I'm now waiting for my referral to 2 specialist to come through and for my next round of ultrasounds in two weeks.

The thing is, I've been on the Evra patch for 7 years and I loving love it. Do any of you ladies know of it could possibly be adding ovary problems?

If it makes you feel any better, my mom bled pretty much non-stop for years when she had fibroids (enough that we always kept a box of super tampons around) and it never caused her any problems other than sheer annoyance/tampon costs. If you're worried about it or have a tendency towards anemia, by all means get it checked out.

And yes she finally had a hysterectomy so it's all better now.

The only birth control I've ever heard of that has a potential to cause cysts are hormonal IUDs like Mirena. I'm not really an expert though, so I'm not sure if the patch could have caused that or not.

It'll be interesting to see what changes occur once the hormones are out of my system. The bad cramps after insertion only last about a day or so. By the next day I felt perfectly normal except for the occasional bad cramp. Heating pads/NSAIDs are your friends! The bleeding after insertion lasted for about a week and that was it.

I'm also on my first pill-free period right now and it's really not a "river of blood." Sometimes it gets really heavy, but mostly it's been pretty moderate. I've only had to use normal and super tampons (along with a pantiliner just in case), which I've pretty much always done anyway. It also helps to keep in mind that you're coming off hormones - I got accustomed to light, short periods on the pill so anything else is going to seem heavy at first. I'll admit the cramps were pretty bad, but they only lasted like a day at most and were at their worst for only a few hours of that. On days when I had to be at work, I used those Thermacare stick-on heat pads and it did the trick.

Vitamin E is indeed worth a try too. I took it around my insertion too, so I can't say for sure if it's made a difference or not since I don't have anything to compare it to. But I don't seem to be getting the insane bleeding some people describe so maybe there's something to it. I only take it when I'm actually bleeding since that's what people generally recommended. So one bottle will last you quite a while and it's not like you'll be popping pills by the handful everyday of the month.

(As always this is just my experience so far and yours could always be different)

The doctor was really nice and brought in a nurse to hold my hand as I apparently have an extra sensitive cervix. If you're having a "period" your cervix will move lower so that might be why the strings are lower. Check in a few days or a week to see if they've moved back up.

I've been thinking about the weight thing lately. I've gained 8 lbs in the just under 1.5 years since getting my Mirena in, when I had previously been at the exact same weight for several years. And eating less and exercising hasn't made a dent. It's really weird. I thought I couldn't deal with the potential massive periods that might come with the Paragard, but it's been looking more attractive lately.

I doubt there would be any major complications, since having your period isn't really a necessity. It's possible she might have had some heavy periods or bleeding, but that's all I can think of. So maybe they were just trying to save her the hassle of dealing with that? Maybe she should still ask her doctor just to find what the reasoning was since we're all so curious now. :v:

Yeah, I've heard it argued that women today actually have many more periods than any other time in human history. In the past they were often either pregnant or nursing for a significant portion of their lives and besides the complications that can come with something like pregnancy it didn't cause any problems.

What kind of stories are you looking for? I kind of jumped from one worry-free birth control to another, but I did rely solely on condoms for probably at least 6 months before that. I never got pregnant, never had any scares and none of them ever broke or anything. If you want extra security, would it be possible for you to get Plan B? That way you have it right there if something happens and you think you might need it. Plus you would just have some extra peace of mind from the knowledge that it's there. That's what I did anyway since I have major pregnancy anxiety off BC.

Also, I don't know if anyone in the thread would know since most of us are kind of on the younger side, but if anyone here has managed to get their tubes tied - how much did it cost? There's a possibility I may be getting a job with health insurance soon and it might be the best time since I really don't have a lot of expenses otherwise. I know it depends on the health plan, but I'm trying to get a ballpark idea so I can save up before I start searching doctors who might consider this. I wasn't sure if the price estimate in the OP was with or without insurance in mind.

I've been wanting to do this for 13 years or more and my parents aren't grandkid-crazy so that won't be a problem either. It's just been on my mind a lot lately because my peers are all either pregnant/trying to get pregnant/have new babies and it's making it even clearer to me how much I DO NOT want children ever.
