The last segment also showed that the navy needed an hour, 4 helicopters and like 30 men to do what the top gear camera crew did 40 times in that hour.

What? Are you talking about filming Tanner driving around? It was either scripted, or they ran it for real and had the footage of him being captured during the real one and then went back and filmed other bits of him "running." You know, like TGUK does it.

May just seems to have good chemistry with both Hammond and Clarkson. Stuff the Panamera vs. The Royal Mail hinged on May and Hammond being in a car together for a long drive, it would have been pointless without good banter between them.

Segments like the communist car review and Rolls-Royce vs. Mercedes Grosser show that May and Clarkson have even better on-screen chemistry, they're some of my favorite bits of the show. Their bit on finding the first car with a modern control layout was pretty neat too, and gave Clarkson an excuse to act a bit more like an engineering enthusiast than a buffoon.

On the other hand, Hammond and Clarkson don't work very well together without having May to act as a voice of reason. I wonder how much of that is an act and how much is real? There haven't been very many segments featuring just the two of them.

I'm thinking of an episode, which I can't recall at the moment, where James and Richard were having drinks, Jeremy had either not shown up yet or stepped away, and the editors took special care to include the terribly awkward silences between sips. But you're right, they're usually okay together.

Like the one from Episode One of the current series, in which Stig topped the Power Board in the Pagani Huayra? I did wish to see Stig lap the track in the SRT Viper though.

e: or did you mean regular cars as in ones in a similar price bracket as the GT86? If so then yeah, I'd like to see more of that too.

The Stig doesn't need to sleep and has perfect night vision, they should have him running cars on laps 24/7 and populate the board with every vehicle available on the open market.

How about just every now and then? I wouldn't even care if they tear them apart and give them poo poo reviews. :)

They usually do reviews of everyday cars in the form of challenges. Fiat 500 vs. BMXers, Peugeot 207 vs. freerunners and so on. We haven't had any of that yet in this season, but I'm sure there'll be a couple.

Actually, I'd like to see them tell everybody the cost of maintaining those hypercars. Granted, if you can afford that new Pagani, you're not going to worry about how much it costs to keep it running. It would be interesting to know.

The only reason why the FR-S exists is because they created the Scion brand in the US. It is the same as a GT-86.

Yeah I don't consider super cars/exotics as "regular cars" in this context. I was stuck on the first sentence of your post for a sec thinking "in what world is the Huyara a regular car :psyduck:"

Anyway I like the random regular cars to see how they like or hate them, particularly cause they have no problem blasting cars or being effusive when they find something they genuinely like (vs something like Motorweek being sorta :geno: all the way through). And knowing how they perform in a mall or when delivering a man in the trunk or on a fox/car hunt is just icing on the cake.

Cojawfee posted:

Well a bit cheapened iirc, but otherwise yeah it's the same outside some details here and there that don't affect the driving characteristics.

I want them to do more reviews of a bunch of similar cars, like the one they did with cars from the pacific rim. It's a bit old-school Top Gear, but I think the format works well. Go through each car and describe its strong points and faults, then eliminate them one by one until only their preferred car is left.

They could even do it with some grueling not-quite-realistic tests and explosions to make the short attention span crowd happy.

From a purely AI perspective though, the supercar reviews are useful. Because in 20 years when an Aston V12 Vantage Ultimate Super Edition and an AMG DoppelBlack is worth less than %10 of its original value and can be bought from a shady used car lot in the bad end of town and gas costs more per kilo than cocaine, you can look back at those reviews to help you decide which is the wiser investment for your hard earned kid's inheritance.

You forgot the Fiat 500 Abarth, I'd definitely call that a hot hatch.

The Renaultsport Twingo/Clio/Megane should not be underestimated, and then there's the Peugeot 208 GTI, Citroen DS3 Racing, Alfa Romeo MiTo QV, VW Polo GTI/Skoda Fabia VRS/Seat Ibiza Cupra and Suzuki Swift Sport, and I'm probably forgetting some.
