Here's a track I put together with my two rapper-friends: https://soundcloud.com/knightsofthecrunktable/dead-already More on the way - We've been focusing more on getting shows set up than recording new songs recently, but the pipeline is filled with updates.

I'd love some critique on this. I like the kick but some of the other elements I'm not too hot on. https://soundcloud.com/heyitsben/2-9-13

In terms of making drums snap harder, is it just a feel thing or more of a forumla like short attack/long release etc? Something I'm trying to learn about.

Look into parallel compression if you haven't yet. If you already use that technique, you'll prolly have to fiddle around with you EQ just a bit more.

Yeah I almost exclusively use parallel compression on drums. I'm using a CamelCrusher in addition to Live's compressor so I guess I'll just keep fiddling with the settings and find something that works.

if nobody has figured out sidechaining in ableton yet its the easiest loving thing in the world to do and makes any beat have bearnuts you ever notice that little arrow on the left side of the compressor? no, me niether for like 10 years. click it. pick the source to side chain. you are welcome bitches.

it even works when the signal track is muted, so you can duck a bassline to non-existant kick drums etc does this even make sense

Ya. Works with the gate too. Did you just get Live?

no dude I've been using it since before it came out in the early 2000s it toook me 10 years to see that goddamn arrow also I never knew for the first 2yrs using reason I could load my own waves in the nnxt cuz of the same thing i made do without any fancy bullshit forever, just dragged and dropped waves like it was acidpro in 99

In Maschine I think you have to do sidechaining with plugins. I use LFOTool but it kind of sucks because it operates off MIDI notes so you have to manually copy all your kick drum events to the LFOTool track every time you change them. I could probably use Jack to route the kick and bass to Live and sidechain there though.

I'm looking to get into doing production. Yes, I read the last few pages and have seen the recommendations, but I still had a question. I used to play keyboard when I was a kid (10-12 years ago?), but I quit after awhile. What I was wondering was, would it be recommended to pickup a midi keyboard and learn again, or should I just get one of those Akai (or other brand) devices? Also, if it matters I would be using Reason.

Ableton Sidechaining: Can you monitor with effects? I got my bassline and kick routed to individual inputs in Ableton with Jack, applied the compressor to the bass audio track and set the trigger input but it doesn't do anything when I turn monitoring on, still sounds the same even doing something like tweaking the compressor gain knob. I don't know poo poo about using Live

Here is a posse cut that came out today. I made the beat. The boys rapping are the AWTHNTKTS and the girl is Baby Jayne. It goes Ion, Romulan, Baby Jayne, and then johndope. I am not responsible for the Lebowski quotes, they kinda decided that would be the hook after I passed the file off to them. https://soundcloud.com/awthntkts/see-what-happens And then, besides that, there's this beat tape that ALSO dropped today, of stuff I made, for rappers to rap on. http://drumbeats.bandcamp.com/album/murmur-weapons-volume-3 The beat on See What Happens was originally part of this batch, but it and one other got picked off by local folks I work with before the tape was ready to go. Everything on here was made since the new year. Tell me what you think, or if you want to rap on stuff.

Don't think you need the "gently caress a stranger in the rear end" sample, it's a bit dumb / over the top, just "See what happens" is effective.

Thanks! Yeah, it's John Barry - "007 and Counting", gets used quite a lot. His ultra-dangerous / sexy scores are rife for sampling. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tBtgvkWNLI
