"oh ho ho ho you could work with the ladies in the office with these skills oh ho ho ho" However we then got to learn maths under the guise of alien wars and intense action. Enter Mega Maths Blaster: This was basically the poo poo of our computer classes and was pretty drat hard to complete at our level of education (and our lovely school too). I remember my best friend(we both loved Pokemon) beating it one time during computer class and everyone crowded around him and gave him a pat on the back and such glorious praise that I could only sit there seething at the attention he was getting. But that's for an E/N thread in another time. Like your lovely computers, we also had a game that everyone wanted to play but only limited numbers could. We also had a game that everyone could play at any time. And of course for some reason everyone loved that drat pinball game that came with windows. I remember we had to have our parents permission and a special 'internet licence' in order to dial up and browse the world-wide-web. (I was maybe one of two in our class ) So after making everyone super jealous from the dial up tone, all I would do was ask jeeves about Pokemon... And I don't just mean a photocopy, I mean someone not in any way involved with the producers of the game just made a half-assed manual full of misleading, and flat-out wrong information. If you were really unlucky, you'd just get that sticker on the back of the case that told you the controls of the game (again, usually with several errors) in blue ink. The scrambled channels were sometimes really relaxing to just have on as background noise during the night, too. I remember one night just having the audio to American Pie playing from a scrambled signal all night long while I worked on other stuff and remembering enough of the visuals of the film from seeing it in the theater. One thing about the 90s for me, though, is that it really felt like the last gasp of TV being pretty cool in general with things like the B-grade and classic late-late shows on TNT, TBS and WGN, syndicated SF series on local broadcasters at 1AM. I still remember out of the blue one night TBS decided to show the original, non-MST3k version of Mitchell out of nowhere. Shows like Up All Night, Monstervision, Joe Bob Briggs, etc. DrBouvenstein posted:The weirdest part about renting NES/SNES games was sometimes you'd get a weird, not original, manual in the plastic case. To go back in time a bit more around these, I seem to remember that when these sort of gaming things were all over the place it was during a period of time when the game industry was trying to get rid of video store game rentals. I think the popular reason was that they felt it was stealing sales. As a tie-in to this, it seemed that at the height of this that stores were being told that they couldn't even xerox replacement instructions in case of loss or damage, since that was violating copyright. So, these started to come out more and more. Then, I think, there was a game company that threatened to sue the makers of one these things for saying they were stealing and selling copyrighted content from the manuals by putting "B=Punch, A=Kick". Here's some articles from almost 25 years ago on some of it (the only links I could find all come from the same source, though.) http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/1989-08-13/business/8902250572_1_nintendo-blockbuster-video-games http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/1989-08-16/business/8902260327_1_blockbuster-entertainment-nintendo-blockbuster-video (This one seems to be more an editorial piece, but the guy is on Nintendo's side for this.) http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/1989-08-10/business/8902250177_1_nintendo-blockbuster-manuals edit: A quote from one of the articles on Nintendo's stance on the matter: "Nintendo, the Redmond, Wash.-based subsidiary of the Japanese toy company, said that Blockbuster`s move to stop photocopying manuals ``only takes care of the future. But we intend to recover for damages already sustained by Blockbuster`s illegal actions,`` said Lynn Hvalsoe, Nintendo`s legal counsel." I'll raise you Mavis Beacon c.a 1988! Also anyone from Australia remember getting this? There seemed to be a glut of shovelware games based around promoting products during the 90's at the height of the CD-ROM boom. Microsoft actually had to take action, either legal or just strong-arming, to stop this poo poo, and that's why these OS-intercepting things went away. MS knew that putting all this junk in front of their Windows products would confuse people as to what Windows was and what it was supposed to do (esp. since in the 90s, there were many first time PC owners who had no idea what a computer was). Say what you will about MS, but stopping this was certainly the right move. Among those things which Microsoft ended, was Compaq's TabWorks, which sorted your applications and files like a paper binder. I have an old Windows 3.1 laptop which has Tabworks, and I can see why you'd need some help with that confusing mess, but Windows 95 doesn't need that. Now that Windows 8 is here, maybe it's time for Tabworks to make a comeback.

I had gotten the first few seasons of Are You Afraid of the Dark on DVD a while back and I found out a friend of mine hadn't ever seen the show. After watching several episodes all she could say was it was a bit cheesy with me saying "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND AND YOU NEVER WILL. Today I was thinking about how video games were portrayed in 90s sitcoms. Usually you'd see a Genesis or SNES console on top of the TV, yet the person playing was always using a joystick for some reason. And the sounds coming from the game were always Pac-Man-esque blips and bleeps. I don't know why, but the joystick thing drove me nuts as a kid.

The guys at Mad Onion really wanted to show just how amazing computers could be with a little imagination. 3DMark 2000 in particular is forever burned in my head because my nerd dad actually ripped the music from it and put it on a CD and we'd listen to it on long car rides sometimes.
