I'll bet if you asked the owner why he's driving this, he'll say, "Well, it's gets me where I want to go."

I've driven worse-looking cars.

I drove a rusty Subaru for years because it didn't break down and owed me nothing (and I owed nothing on it). There is a quiet dignity in this.

I did that wooden bumper thing once. Not to my own car, one of my coworkers was in an accident and it ripped the bumper cover clean off. She drover he car like that for 3 weeks so one night I dashed home, grabbed a 2x4 and some zip ties and wrote BUMPER with a backwards R on it. I think she drove it for two more days before noticing.

There's a difference between a decent beater and a monstrosity with bull horns, a wooden plank bumper, and what may be fire damage to the rest of the front end.

Yes - A decent beater is :10bux:, that right there is "I WILL PAY YOU TO GET THIS OUT OF MY YARD"

That :10bux: can be kind of important if you're eating-out-of-the-trash broke in college. I personally wasn't, but there were a couple guys on my floor freshman year that were just... :smith:

I paid $1 for a rusty-as-all-gently caress VW Beetle. I drove it for a year. I have no regrets since it saved me from the city bus (where I was always really early for work or slightly late and a ten minute trip would take an hour).

There are a lot of people who take their Raptors offroad. Not all of them are rear end munches that think a factory truck, even a special vehicle team one, should exempt them from breakage when driving it like a $400,000 pre-runner.

For what it is the couple I've been in and the one I've driven were pretty drat awesome. And my close friend who bought one 4 (5?) years ago is waiting on his new one from the factory now. Should be in the in the next three months. His old one will be traded in and cost him well under $3k a year to drive all said and done (yes, depreciation included).

I don't think he does now. Feet don't need insuring. I love how it got the characteristic arching in the middle on impact.

This should be mandatory for all Fords straight after production. It'll force them to make durable vehicles.

The Raptor is a pretty drat good truck. But like Motronic said, a lot of people think ":haw: I paid for a super badass truck, it can do anything! Hey I know I'll go jump some dunes doing 60 HEY HOLD MY BEER FOR A MINUTE OK?"

Can we attach one dodge via chain to the bumper of a Ford Raptor and watch it drag the Dodge over the jump as fast as it can? I'd probably pitch in a buck or two to watch.

This is pretty much par for the course in Southeast Asia. When I was in Cambodia last year, the record was 6 people on a moped, 5 people in a single-cab Hilux and four people on a pushbike.

Actually, the Hilux might have been in Thailand. Either way, no-one cars about minor traffic violations like having your entire extended family on your moped.

It's easier than skinning an entire fender? Same reason why people get fiberglass hoods and stuff - you can take the piece off easily without any cutting or welding.

Hey FedEx, how dare you deliver something before your "delivered by" time.
I think it's just the installation that raises a flag. A lot of the ones I've seen are lovely, hacked in gauges that are barely secured to the pillar. It's akin to putting a 7 inch tach on your stock d16 civic as if you needed that much notice to shift, ever.

If they're on a fast enough or a very well built car I think they get a pass but when they get put on either mostly-stock or hacked together cars they just add to the embarrassment.

I'd say it depends on the gauges being used. With manufacturers eliminating all but the bare essentials, and even turning most of those into mechanical idiot lights (temperature gauges that are pegged in the middle unless the engine is dead cold or catastrophically overheating, fuel gauges that only really tell you when the tank is full, half or empty and guess for everything else, oil pressure gauges that extrapolate data based on engine RPM and temperature) I can understand wanting to install aftermarket coolant/oil temperature, voltage/ammeter or oil pressure gauges on an otherwise stock or lightly modded car.

OTOH, I'll agree if we're talking about putting a boost gauge, pyrometer, A/F R (without wideband O2 sensor, of course) or GPS speedometer on a bone stock econobox.

Depends what you're watching, really. The stereotype exists for a reason, but a statement like that is the equivalent of saying everyone who modifies a car is a twat because you've never seen anyone who wasn't a ricer.

Also, from everything I can see, that shop does drat good work. Granted, the car is probably not as safe as the day it rolled off the line, but I would bet it's a major step up from most of what is rolling down Russian roads.

As far as cost:benefit ratio, it's likely safe to assume that car markets east of the former Iron Curtain operate a bit differently from those in the USA/Western Europe.
