It feels a bit overprocessed but the narrow dof works for me since it drives home the "wow that bird is dumb/dead" feeling.

Loving Africa Chaps posted:That photo is awful. Super shallow depth of field that makes it painful to look at and the thing that dominates the photo is completely out of focus. I get what they were trying to do but it wasn't very interesting to start with. I think the point of the photo was to make the gator look like a part of the landscape. (its not a super great photo but its interesting)

Syrinxx posted:"wow that bird is dumb/dead" feeling. It doesn't work for me because the truth is that the bird is completely safe so instead of showing two animals interacting they use the DOF to force some sort of artificial separation between them.

Yeah this too. If it was a little deer or something a crocodile would actually go for it might be a bit better.

I think the crocodile is out‐of‐focus to a distracting degree. If it’s not going to be in‐focus, it should be thoroughly out‐of‐focus. Not unrecognisable, but unrecognisable at first glance.

Man, those are badass. I've tried doing stuff like that with a master chief doll I have, and I lack the eye for it or something. Everything comes out looking like a cheap snapshot. The snow scene in particular is drat epic.

Frederik Buyckx, who's studying his Masters at my school*, got an honorable mention in this year's World Press Photo. On one hand, it makes me proud to be studying in the same institution as him. On the other, it makes me wonder whether I'll be even as good. http://www.worldpressphoto.org/awards/2013/daily-life/frederik-buyckx?gallery=6096&photographer=6971 *Or graduated, don't know actually but I did see him at school today so I dunno.

Zachary Norman posted:Each image was constructed using only two anamorphic sheets of (flat) inkjet paper, a roll of green seamless paper, a set of lights and a camera. The apparent three-dimensionality of each form is an illusion achieved through anamorphism and multiple strobes flashes (exposures) all executed “in-camera”. The colors of the forms are the result of middle mixtures achieved through multiple exposures. The colors were determined by a strict formula- the color spectrum was quantified, using the hexadecimal format, and then divided by the number of faces of a given Platonic Solid, each face was then assigned a fraction of the color spectrum. For example, an octahedron has eight sides so the spectrum was divided into eight equal fractions and each face of the octahedron was assigned one of these colors. http://www.zacharydeannorman.com/solids.html

Woah wait what. Bland, I mean I like the colour and contrast and whatnot when it comes from MF but I think the framing and stuff is a bit poo poo. But now I know they are not trees I'll go have a proper read about what's going on.
