Noreaus posted:Wasn't that image posted like 3 pages ago? It's taking massive liberties with the word 'invaded'. Yeah I immediately looked at Norway and was like "uhhhh does the Norwegian campaign of WW2 really count as an invasion?" (assuming that's the only time we "invaded" them, I could just be an even worse historian than I thought). This is the woodcut image from the title page of "Haec Vir", a 1620 cheap English pamphlet about the "cross-dressing" controversy of the the time. In early 1620 James I encouraged preachers to write sermons about men and women wearing bits and pieces of clothing associated with the opposite sex (it wasn't real cross-dressing you see, more like the Jacobean equivalent of emo kids wearing girls' jeans), so they did so. The cheap print industry of London and England started turning out a bunch of pamphlets addressing the debate, including "Hic Mulier", "Muld Sacke", and this one. The pamphlets condemned cross-dressing on the whole but had a playful attitude considering the main motivation behind their production was commercial, and Haec Vir has an imagined dialogue between a "man-woman" and "womanish man" about the merits of the practice that some even consider proto-feminist. As you can see it's pretty difficult to figure out anything unusual about the dress above through modern eyes, but for women some items of "masculine clothing" included broad-brimmed hats and yellow ruffs (interestingly, when one authority called for the banning of yellow ruffs, James I told him to retract his statement because they were associated with the court fashions/Overbury scandal and he didn't want the moral panic to become a means of criticism against the Crown).

When were Chile, Peru or Ecuador ever invaded by the British? Tangentially related: there's a pan-Latin American forum I used to browse in order to improve my Spanish. The various nationalities mostly seemed to hate each other, particularly the Chileans and the Peruvians. The latter accused the former of wanting to be white, and they made photoshopped images to illustrate how ridiculous this claim was (being ironically racist in the process). I saved some of them. I apologize in advance for the crude and ridiculous Hitler 'shops, but I want to give you a glimpse into the seedy world of Latin American internet nationalism. Guy on the right: 'If Hitler saw me, he'd be very proud.' Monkey: ? I'm not even sure. It looks like they're making fun of the Chilean accent. Hitler: 'Die Chimonkeys!' Hitler: 'God! What did I do that this herd of Chilean Indians dreams of being Nazis?' Hitler: 'Odin, why must you punish me like this? These Chilean baboons want to be Nazis...nein...nein!' Hitler: 'Odin, remove from my sight these babboon Indians with Eskimo faces!' There's also this image created by a Chilean:

seiferguy posted:Take a guess at what this map is before you find the answer: You can colour in Mali soon! France comes in second place, including invading all eight of its neighbors and this valiant expedition: The one-man invasion attempt of the island of Sark by a mad scientist Sark is a small island in the Chanel Islands just off the the French coast of Normandy and is populated at about 600 people. There are no cars, only tractors and horse drawn vehicles are allowed. In August 1990, an unemployed French nuclear physicist named Andre Gardes (so technically a mad scientist) decided to forcefully set himself up as the ruler of Sark and attempted a single handed invasion of the island armed with a semi automatic weapon. The night Gardes arrived he put up signs declaring his intention to take over the island the following day at noon. The local volunteer Constable, the only law enforcement on the island, being informed of the invasion thanks to the notices, decided to take the threat seriously. On the morning of the invasion, Constable Perrée began to plan the island’s defense, which was a two stage scheme. First, he went looking for Mr. Gardes. He found him sitting on a park bench in army fatigues preparing for the massacre that was about to befall the island. As the Constable approached the invading army (a.k.a. Gardes), he saw Gardes loading his automatic weapon. The first “showing up” stage now complete, Mr. Perrée executed the second stage of the plan. He complimented Mr. Gardes on his choice of gun and convinced Gardes to remove the magazine and let him see the instrument of the island’s assured defeat, so the constable could better admire it. When Gardes acquiesced, the Constable took the gun and punched him in the nose. The invasion was over. On the other hand America can be said to be well on the way to overtaking the British, "invasion" being up to interpretation Brigadier Sockface fucked around with this message at 00:49 on Feb 25, 2013 |

Bolivia also hates Chile, for this reason: Although Bolivia did start the war In my experience Chileans don't really care about Peru or Bolivia, they're seen as poor and irrelevant neighbours. Chileans save their nationalist hate for Argentina, I guess because they are the closest rivals in terms of economy and power. When I was in Chile people frequently complained about how the Argentinians were snobbish and Europe-wannabes, several people were quite proud of Chile's support of Britain during the Falkland war. Man, you gotta love the Angolan flag: quote:As in some other African countries, this flag is a modification of the ruling party's flag. The guerilla movement and later governing party, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), used the same design with a golden star in the center. Red stood for socialism and black for Africa. They tried to get this dumb thing as a flag, but it failed: quote:In 2003, a new, more "optimistic" flag was proposed by the Parliament's Constitutional Commission of the National Assembly (Angolan Parliament), but was not adopted. The sun design in the middle is meant to be reminiscent of cave paintings found in Tchitundo-Hulu cave.
