gently caress yeah dirty tricks. Just got a melee guy to chase me up onto a ledge and I was blinding him and knocking him off over and over again, I noticed one charged at me and said 'Time to die!' and it sounded literally like a goon from Arkham City. Has anyone noticed the floaty jumping? On a keyboard you can use A and D in midair and sort of jump around corners, combine with the climbing axe for bizarre jumping shenanigans. I love 'Where the hell did she get a god drat machine gun?!' when they are in a military bunker with mounted turrets. I am hoping for a survivalist difficulty where hunting animals is actually necessary or at least provides some kind of benefit (having eaten lets you take an extra hit or so, that sort of thing). VarXX posted:My friend had the same issue and giving him this registry file and having him run it fixed it. Apparently the game holds the config stuff in the registry and sometimes steam isn't creating the entry on install which causes the game to crash when you enter options. The issue with failing to initialize direct3d was exclusive mode, which is disabled in that registry file. (Note: it's my file, you can open and look at it if you want.) By the way... I don't know if you need this. I got the same error, but I noticed that the option for refresh rate was set to 30 or something. Which my monitor didn't support. As soon as I switched it to 60 it worked like a charm, no error.

Ugh, don't look at the multiplayer options unless you like having the exotic enemies spoiled. Yeah it's Tomb Raider so those elements aren't exactly out of left field, but it would have been nice to maintain some of the mystery. Only up to the radio tower (is that worth spoiling?) and enjoying myself a lot, even if I think I accidentally broke something by fast traveling back past a bridge which had collapsed, opening a door. I ended up in an area where I could jump to the "towers" collectibles were on, but there weren't any ziplines or anything to get back so I had to commit suicide. Game is quite well balanced for someone like me on Hard; at least so far. Being careful is rewarded but messing up isn't a death sentence. Love how clumsy and chaotic the fights feel, even if they are at odds with how Lara's presented as a character. If I see another bloody game with World War 2 Japanese bunkers however... poptart_fairy fucked around with this message at 11:29 on Mar 5, 2013 |

I know it's a long shot but considering I just lost 4 hours of progress, anyone have a save about the time you are in (Location Spoiler) Shantytown for the PC version, I think steam overwrote my save when it re-connected to the cloud. Overall though it was really fun before that happened, though I found most of the weapons kinda superfluous with the bow in general.

Yeah, if Lara hunches down without being in cover then it's an indication you can sneak about a little without enemies zeroing in on you. They're quite chatty so it should be obvious when you're being hunted.

The animation quality in this one is quite weird - it's pretty nice and fluid when it works as intended, which makes it that much worse when it turns janky and stiff when Lara gets stuck in the scenery or jumps at the wrong spot. It's actually quite like the animation in Uncharted series was - down to the flaws and all.

Loving how Lara's hair is the difference between 20fps and 60fps, it's also seems to be the only difference between ultra and ultimate. Truly is next gen when hair has its own engine and brings my PC to its knees.

There's no egregious smoothing or acceleration on the mouse controls, it feels like raw input, which is awesome. Everything else feels fine, but you can probably remap whatever you want. What's the deal with tressfx anyway? If I turn it on, it hovers around 30fps, but if the camera gets closer to lara it goes down to 2fps. Is it dynamically rendering more hairs depending on camera distance or something? That would be weird. That or it's probably just lovely compatibility with nvidia stuff.

It probably does a ton of stuff per pixel - so if the hair takes up more % of pixels on the screen, the effect will be that much more expensive. EDIT: looks like it uses a compute shader to build a list of overlapping elements per pixel. Similar to AMD's order independent transparency demos from a few years back. So yeah, that would get pretty heavy as it covers more of the screen. Spite fucked around with this message at 13:31 on Mar 5, 2013 |

After the first hunt for food, aren't all future animal kills just to net more salvage parts? As in, mechanical salvage parts? I don't care if it is logically inconsistent, that just makes me laugh so much if it is true.

I laughed after she killed the first deer for food, agonized after stabbing it to death, and then immediately walked away from the body and just left it and was cool again. I don't expect to watch her grotesquely eat a dead animal or anything but it was kinda abrupt. To be fair, it could easily be handwaved away as needing string/fiber/bone, as quite a few of the bow upgrades are obviously not made from mechanical parts. But yeah, since it's a generic pool, you use that deers meat to upgrade your AK.

The only real to kill animals is for experience points. This game is so weird. It's half "Lara Croft is a murder vampire who grows stronger as she feeds on the souls of her enemies" and half "here are extended scenes of Lara getting the everliving poo poo kicked out of her." They really get a bit excessive with the beatings honestly. Getting a huge gouge torn out of you and then having to wade through sewage and THEN having to cauterize the wound with a heated arrowhead?

Yeah the game is pretty savage so far in its treatment to Lara but you know what, I kinda like it, most games you are never in a position of weakness and are just kicking rear end from the word go. Also one thing I want to point out which I will not spoil since its nothing plot related really, but after you get out of the tutorial tomb when you start up your first campfire, I was really surprised to see Lara suffering from the cold shakes. It so simple but it is literally just something I have never seen in a game before. Watching her fumble with the radio while dealing with the cold jitters was just kinda neat I guess?

One of the brawler upgrades has you kneecap an enemy then gouge out their throat. Lara's not an innocent, she just never had an excuse. e; ^ and yeah, they've put a lot of effort into incidental animations. She even puts her hand up against walls and runs her palm against them as you moving forward, it gives her a lot of impact with the world.

Yeah, I really like that they seem to be going for the Lara is a loving sociopath. She just doesn't know it yet. thing rather then the She's just trying to survive man! pull they originally were going with. It makes this much more thematically consistent with the rest of the series.

Also "OH NO I KILLED A MAN!" "HEADSHOT! +15XP!" There is some serious dissonance between the story tone and the xp system. I kind of think they should have dumped per animal xp. And they definitely shouldn't have the KILLING SPREE COMBO KILL type cod4 messages.

I actually think they don't know what they are going for. It's very disjointed. Like they started with her as a pure survivor, then read that ludonarrative dissonance article and decided they had to incorporate the idea somehow, though since they didn't have that in mind at the beginning it's done terribly. And she's a much more likable character as a strong survivor, than as a sociopath. Sure there are hints at "yeah, it was easy to kill that guy" but the narrative is at odds with the gameplay a lot of the time. It seems like they just wanted to get some gruesome animations in, all around, to be honest. ^^^^ Yeah, it's like: oh got shot, bear trap, fell 3 stories, whatever, let me just get up and climb up here to grab another shiny doodad. Also, the sound and voices cut out on me randomly (or get very quiet). Is there a fix for that?

SurrealityCheck posted:Also "OH NO I KILLED A MAN!" I'd actually argue otherwise, that the tone is just right. She never actually stops and mentions that she's sad she killed a person. In fact, when Roth tells her it must have been hard, she says the exact opposite, that it was rather easy, and that scares her. As the game progresses, she gets more and more used to killing, and her quotes reflect the fact that she enjoys the control it gives her. The only time it's ever mentioned indirectly that she might not enjoy the killing is the assault QTE, and even then, it can be panned away as the shock of the event itself, and how close it was. But after it's over, she says it was easy for her to pull that trigger. While yeah, a lot of bad stuff happens to Lara throughout the game, the overall theme seems to be that at our worst moments, we discover who we really are, and Lara is a killer, not that this is what happens to normal innocent girls who get trapped on hellholes.
