I wonder if it was deliberate (end-game enemy spoiler) that the Oni were incredibly vulnerable to firearms.

Just finished it, loved it the whole way through. Lara's evolution into a heroine wasn't as well-defined or effective as CD probably intended, but the story was still entertaining Indiana Jones-esque pulp. Hopefully the next game fits more background and story in and isn't as creepily intent on beating Lara up as much as possible.

I don't think so because they spend the entire game setting up how terrified the Solarii are of them and the Solarii are armed to the teeth. I think it was just bad enemy design. It's pretty funny to imagine an ANCIENT RACE OF NOBLE WARRIORS who get their poo poo pushed in by a single 20-year old with a machine gun though.

I wonder what this more realistic-ish approach to Lara Croft would be like if they did indeed bring back some of the goofier/awesomer aspects of previous Tomb Raiders.

Good job LC you are a hero!

That poor pilot was literally never mentioned again after the crash. Like not even a throwaway line like "looks like the pilots dead" or anything. Lara really hates pilots.

I never got the impression that there was anything romantic going on between Lara and Sam, just two really good friend who went through hell together.

Maybe she's just given up after what the plot does to the first two.

As a side note, Grim is amazing. He really did go out in style.

No kidding. They were a bit of a letdown after every other journal entry in the game builds them up to be nigh-invincible death machines and then they're actually easier to fight than the Solarii.

I was also kind of disappointed that Lara only dual-wields pistols one time in the whole game at the very end. I got all excited when she took Roth's pistols, but then she had to go and give one to Sam and kill my nostalgia boner.

What's the best tomb raider from the others that came out on this generation? This one has kept me greatly entertained but I am very close to finishing and despite loving this one, I really really wish there were more tombs and puzzles and platforming. What would people suggest?

Guardians of the Light or Underworld. GotL is played from a fixed isometric view, so take that into account.

Yea, I think the focus was definitely on character building and background. Everything was build around that, so puzzles took a backseat, but there was still a decent amount of platforming, just not that much.

If this reboot gets a sequel, I'm sure it'll be a bit more fleshed out since they probably won't have to focus so much on Lara becoming who she is, and just her straight up being like "all right bring this poo poo on!" and then 24/7 dinosaur tombs akimbo pistols only. Actually that sounds like some server name for a non-existant game.

Underworld, definitely. Anniversary and Legend are also great.

Underworld also has Lara wielding (TR:U McGuffin spoiler)Mjolnir which is badass. Although it also has an overreliance on physics puzzles, much like this one. Could I maybe have a lateral thinking puzzle, or a cipher, or a maze or something, Crystal Dynamics? Nathan Drake has to do different poo poo in his adventures, so why do I have to keep putting weights on stuff?

I like how all climbable surfaces were marked but unobtrusively so. White, flaking-off paint on most things you could scramble up, typically.

I would love to hear how they came up with the idea for how to indicate what could be shot with the rope arrow. "Hey, why don't we make it...OTHER ROPES?!" "...brilliant!"

I was more thinking how the historical rise of firearms was a big part of the decline of armored cavalry and samurai.

She only gets them at the end to indicate she has fully come into the iconic Lara. It wouldn't make thematic sense to give them to her earlier.

I'm sure they'll be her iconic weapon in the sequel, like how the bow was the big deal here.

Outside of the ropes, I'm having a hard time placing any white fabrics being perfectly clean. The effigies in Shantytown are probably the closest but they definitely have some grime on them.

In the Lost Adventurer pre-order tomb, part of a plane you can climb has long scratches down it.

Maybe not perfectly clean, but a lot of the cloth you need to burn is pretty drat white.

I'm enjoying the game so far. The game though was getting some flack for being an Uncharted clone but so far it feels more like Arkham Asylum and a Metroid-vania game. Not that I'm complaining, this poo poo is awesome.

How does the quick travel work though? Can it only be done at certain camps?

I was actually really glad that most of the puzzles were focused around physics, timing and using Lara's skills in a lateral manner. Uncharted's puzzles are so boring. Stuff like walking across a grid of symbols in the correct pattern is just mind numbing at this point.

It only works in camps that have a little tent as a symbol. Camps that have a fireplace icon can't be used for fast travel.

It's a lot more fun than "throw object onto other object" to me. Every tomb in Tomb Raider basically is "see object, use object, done." They're not awful but they really could have been a lot more.

I think you're over simplifying. Stuff like the World War 2 research bunker with the water, the raft and the electrical wiring is simple in concept, but in execution requires quite a few precise steps. Same with the swinging, lowering chandelier like object and the rafters that you need to use to alter the flow of the storms. They also actually use the ingrained abilities and upgrades you're learning, which is neat.

In Uncharted the game has a built in mechanic that tells you how to do the puzzle and then you just have to go through the usually quite simple motions to complete it. I much prefer Uncharted's more complex climbing moments to it's puzzles.

In general though, I just feel like I'd seen everything Uncharted's puzzles have to offer, whereas with Tomb Raider, at least I had to figure the steps out instead of just going, 'oh, it's one of these'.

Finished it today. Everything about this game was fantastic, and for all the usual gnashing of teeth, the only thing "creepy" or "awkward" here is that with new consoles about to drop, a loving Tomb Raider game stands a good chance of coming out as the pinnacle of game design for this generation of systems.

Seriously, did anyone ever think that a Tomb Raider game would again be on the short list for GOTY? Bizarre.

But there's only one puzzle per tomb. Every tomb follows the same pattern: enter tomb, do puzzle, get reward. I would have liked exploring tombs if they were as fun (and dangerous!) as the roller coaster action sequences. As the tombs are now, a few are challenging, but most feel like smash-and-grabs.

This is really the only problem with the game I can level, other than shittily-done QTEs in the first two hours, exacerbated on PC because of incredibly unclear icons. But in general, instead of multiplayer, getting 7 tombs that each last ~20-30 minutes would have maybe put this in the running for undeniable-game-of-the-year contention.

You don't unlock anything extra for Tier III.

I played through this game over the weekend. The frantic combat, beautiful environments, fun platforming and really cool set pieces made this a surprising win for me. I really liked how the bow stayed relevant for the whole game, and Lara gets a ton of great gadgets throughout. I expected this to be QTE the Game from the promotional stuff, but what QTEs there are really meld with the gameplay and are very intuitive. It never seems like you're pressing a button that wouldn't correspond to what you would be doing. Really enjoyed it and hope we get Tomb Raider 2 with a bit less shooting.
