Such a perfect quote.

The Quad (formerly Imperial Palace) is really run down and pretty lovely. Its saving grace is that it is usually very very cheap. There is also construction going on right now that you will probably hear starting at 6am. All in all paying $100+ to stay at the quad is slightly less desirable than getting punched in the gut, even if you're a person who doesn't normally mind crappy motels.

In meteorology, vorticity often refers to a measurement of the spin of horizontally flowing air about a vertical axis.
I'm at the Flamingo for the weekend, and for my first trip to Vegas, I'm enjoying myself.

Also, if you're a fan, it's well worth the cost to see Evil Dead The Musical. I loved that poo poo. Consider sitting in the splatter zone -- I wish I had.

That's why I said your first post was so perfect, it's the famous last words of everyone who stays at IP or Stratosphere or Circus Circus just because it's the cheapest. Hopefully you didn't get a room with a lot of leftover hair in it.

All of this is making me nervous. I'm looking at booking at the Golden Nugget, in part because it's pretty affordable but also because we'd rather stay downtown than on the Strip. This is the beginning of a roadtrip to Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, etc. and we're going to be staying in plenty of flophouse motels along the way, so I'd like to start out with something better than terrible.

I'm going to be in vegas this weekend for the Viva Las Vegas event at the orleans, staying at the monte carlo. Never been to this event and never stayed at the Monte Carlo but I go to vegas at least once a year; anyone stayed at Monte Carlo or gone to Viva Las Vegas with any good ideas/tips? Monte Carlo always seemed kind of boring to me but it worked out being the cheapest "ok" room near the Orleans by the time we booked. :sigh:

- Actually part of the promo for the room was like 50 bucks dining credit, are any of the food places in there worth a poo poo?

I didn't take any pictures, but the little toiletries were already used, there were weird stains on the curtains and ceiling, the beds were rock hard with a top sheet and worn-out old microfleece blanket (good thing it wasn't cold) and lumpy-rear end pillows. There was a squashed bag of vomit in the horrible parking structure and a weird smell everywhere, not to mention the carpet was coming up in all the hallways and patched with duct tape. At least the bathroom was clean. I've come to the realization that I personally don't need to stay on the strip and will probably get a hotel a few miles away next time and just drive in. It's seriously no big deal.

I stayed there two years ago and found, among other things: an 18" black hair carefully wrapped like a candy cane around the faucet, an inexplicably moist desk chair, and over a dozen sewing needles in the bed.

e: Also there wasn't a single ice machine that worked. Not that I would've used the ice from there anyways.

I stayed in the mid 2000s, when it was the IP. Bad, but apparently not nearly as bad as its fallen. The main issue was it could take well over 10 minutes to get an elevator.

At the Tropicana years ago, we noticed something obscuring the plastic guard over the fluorescent lighting in the bathroom. Lifted it and lo and behold a crack pipe.

I hope the Barbary Coast or Bills whatever, is still awesome.

Thanks y'all! All that is great to hear. The reviews I've seen elsewhere mention the Rush Tower too. My plan is to book the cheap room and then see what I can tip out of the desk clerk.

Another question: I've been to Vegas once before and I remember that casino floors are typically shrouded in a haze of cigarette smoke. We are not really gamblers, but would like to do a little bit of gaming. Recognizing that a smoke-free environment is out of the question, are there any casinos that are better or worse than average, or is it all pretty much the same?

ColdBlooded

Ask me how to run a good team into the ground.
The newer properties have really good ventilation, along with higher ceilings, that make cigarette smoke much more tolerable. On the strip, this would be places like Aria, Wynn, Planet Hollywood, New York New York, Venetian/Palazzo, Bellagio and MGM.

For downtown, the Golden Nugget is probably your best bet but all of the main casinos around Fremont will be smoky to some extent.

Edit: Bring an oxygen mask if you go to the El Cortez.

Re: El Cortez Smoke: Yeah, if you're bothered by smoke, just don't.

I distinctly remember Paris also had some very, very high ceilings and was not at all smoky, which was a great environment to be hungover and devouring their buffet.

Which I might add, the Paris buffet is great and I'm sorry I missed it this last trip to Vegas. Both breakfast and lunch are awesome and the $50/24 hr buffet pass was worth it. Steak and custom crepes in the same 24 hr period? Yes sir.

Echoing sentiments about the newer/ nicer places. I think Cosmopolitan does a great job as well with their ventilation. It also helps that they and a couple other places have perfumed air going through their properties.

If anyone is staying downtown, is getting sick of casinos and wants a great bite to eat for breakfast or lunch, you must try Eat. The website says they open at 7, but last Friday they didn't open until 8am. There were 11 people waiting to get in when the doors opened. I was afraid it wouldn't be worth the hype (very highly rated on yelp) but I was not disappointed!

Easy to get to, just walk down to the El Cortez and turn right. Corner of Carson and 7.

I'm sure my experience was localized to just me but we had a terrible time here.

Waiter was condescending as gently caress for some reason, we got our meals before our appetizer so we asked to cancel the appetizer. It came out anyway 10 mins later and we were given a hard time when we turned it down. The Burgers we got were dry even when asked to be done medium (turns out they just have them precooked and sitting there which is why the burger came out in less than 5 mins) and 2 of them were cold.

The guys on the dueling pianos were good at least. :sigh:

This is a bit early, but I'm looking into staying 4-5 nights in late June (21st to 24th) and need to be able to get to the speedway fairly quick - for EDC.

Last year it was pretty bad, but we also stayed in town and drove up the main interstate/highway to get to the speedway. Is there somewhere else we could stay, say north of town and drive down, or is everything all in town?

e: The 3 of us only need the room for sleeping/showering. Otherwise, we're gonna be out and about, so we're looking for fairly cheap places.

If you were here last year you'd know that there is literally nothing north of the Speedway. Your best bet would to stay at like the Comfort Inn or Holiday Inn by Nellis AFB. I guess.

This might sound dumb but you should Yelp that poo poo. Certain places can be kinda generous when met with specific, detailed complaints about their service. I'm sorry to hear that man. I'd heard nothing but the best about the place, and it was on my must-try list next time around. Will be wary of it next time. But their beer selection looks so good (for the Strip, that is)!

Todd English's Pub or Gordan Ramsay Pub & Grill are MUCH better options. There's really only 2 things the Monte Carlo is good for. Brand Steakhouse and Hotel 32. The rest of it sucks rear end.

I've found that almost all "user generated" websites are mediocre at best for reviews. There's two types of people who use Yelp in my opinion, people who think they are foodies and people who like to rant about bad experiences.

I'm going to be in Las Vegas for two nights with a group of guys in their 20s - maybe 25 guys Friday/Saturday. Potential interest in a night club, prefer to avoid bottle service but I'd be interested to hear about any options.

Is there anything I can arrange in advance so that going out logistics aren't a nightmare? Or, put differently, what would you do in my situation?

I'm wondering the same. I'm heading down for my bachelor party in a month with 12 guys. Worried about getting into clubs / lines / cover charges since we have no women with us.

I'm really interested in talking to as many girls as possible during the day, though, both to keep up energy and because running into girls you've met before is v. good and fun. What's the best place to do that? I don't want to do a formal dayclub because it's not in the budget. Are there any bars that are especially good/social/young during the daytime? We're doing hotel pool on Sat, but a fun daytime bar for Friday would be great, especially given that people are getting in at different times.

Bachelor activities: Pool parties, night clubs, strip clubs. Go shoot guns or drive some cars around LV Motor Speedway if that's your thing. I prefer the TnA
