As for this thread, I know a lot of mush mouth rap fans in real life who honestly like some 3-6 or Lil Wayne more than a rapper than composes coherent thoughts in a creative way. Most times, we don't cross paths but in it happens in this thread. I think if Biggie was alive, people would be arguing why Wayne or Juicy is superior to him or something.

I unironically think Mista Don't Play is as good as any of the widely proclaimed classic albums. I was also thugging the gently caress out when that album came out and rode to it for over a year. I still replay it to this day regularly and it holds its own as much as it ever did.

Its a nice way to say that people are tired of hearing about the same regional acts over and over like they are newsworthy.

Wow, well, you're missing out.

I think the Dungeon Family should be entered into the contenders for Greatest Southern Rap. Now this encompasses Outkast, Goodie Mob, Killer Mike, and the Organized Noize production team- who produced, unarguably, some of the best rap music of all time.

Goodness no, now that wouldn't do at all!

So I'm finally getting into some of the backlog of albums I've been putting off...

Deniro Farrar's album "The Patriarch" is really nice. I'm actually surprised how well his style meshes with the production. He's similar to a slightly...more introspective/realistic/softer Gibbs. There's still a lot of straight up gangsta, but he doesn't quite come off as unassailable as a lot of similar dudes. I would pick out a couple of standouts, but really the whole album is good. "Feel The Rain" is probably my fav track on the album though. Also it doesn't have anything to do with the music but this might have the best cover art for a non Lil B rap album this year.

New Doppelgangaz "Hark" album is solid, but nothing really that different from their other material. Production seems a bit more varied though (which is really the highlight imo) but it's not really different enough to change anyone's minds about them, I imagine. If you liked their earlier stuff you'd probably enjoy this. Lots of dark production with rhymes about being a scumbag of some sort.

Quelle Chris put out another album "Niggas is Men" (well, I think this is more to showcase his friends in preparation for his real album, but whatever). I didn't like this as much as his last actual album (Shotgun and Sleek Rifle), a lot of which I attribute to all the guest rappers/producers. I do think there's a couple of good tracks on here, and it's got a bit of the conscious vibe without being too preachy that I know a lot of dudes look out for.

This isn't exactly a new album but they've been putting out some stuff this year and I think will have something within the near future to release. "Mother Nature Wants Us Dead" by Dinosaur Burps (worst rap name since TURD imo) is really nice. Album came out last year but I just found out about them a few weeks ago or so. They got the whole live-band thing going, and sound similar to mid/late 00's "underground" rappers. They fit right in with the revival of dudes who can actually rap that's going on, so that's cool.

Koncept "Malt Disney" is an EP that I found somewhere or something, and it's pretty good for being short. Dude sounds similar to early Mos Def mixed with Apathy (his punch likes really pop). Content definitely tends more towards Ap than Mos, however. Production is good, sounds quite polished actually. I'll be checking if/when he releases a proper album, really cool little project.

Astro "Deadbeats & Lazy Lyrics". Pretty much if you like Joey Bada$$, you'll probably like this dude. Even younger and also can rap his rear end off (on his tape he looks 8 but I guess he's 15/16?). Production also has that similar throwback feel/use of old beats. Think he's also a NY dude so they must have put something in the water about 15 or so years ago to get all these superrapping kids. Too bad they never sent any of that stuff down south, but I digress.

Still got a bunch of stuff to go through, but these are some of the highlights and impressions of things I've tried to get through recently. As always, there's pretty much too much good music coming out to keep up on everything (which isn't a bad thing).

I thought short arms were good for benching :smith:
Any more news re: Freddie Gibbs/Madlib album? I listen to the Shame EP pretty much everyday and that album is in my top 5 most anticipated for this year.

Other stuff I've been listening to:

Harry Fraud: Definitely some skippable tracks, but generally solid. I like his more ethereal tracks (Sunday/4 the money) more than the Coke Boy stuff.
Kevin Gates, Luca Brasi: really solid. He sounds like Joe Budden, but better in every way. Very similar to Deniro Farrar IMO.
Kid A, the Endemic: Not really sure who to compare him to -- just a solid tape. More pop influenced than anything else.
Everything by Clipse/Pusha. I just love them so much.

Sadly, Big Boi's new album lost a lot of its luster. I live in Atlanta, so I'm obligated to blast "in the A" constantly, but besides that and the Phantogram tracks I've pretty much stopped listening to it.

Agreed on all counts. Good Girl might be my favorite beat sampling Imogen Heap.

I know Gibbs and Madlib went on tour for awhile, but outside of the two EPs and some vague mentions of them working on it, I haven't heard anything. At this point I'm putting it in the Madvillian 2 category of stuff that's had some songs done, but will likely never be finished (or at least finished when people still care).

I'm 100% with you on the Harry Fraud album. I didn't mention that one because it's been talked about a bit already, but I didn't like it as much as similar projects from other producers (Alchemist's comes to mind). I respect the fact he can make decent beats for a variety of dudes, but I wish he'd stop putting out tracks with so many dudes who are garbage imo.

And Big Boi's album was something that faded pretty quick for me. Still wish someone else had made that album (Andre 3000 would've been great). I like the Phantogram tracks a lot as well, but honestly I wish they had versions without Big Boi because he just sounds so out of place on them. Dude's good at what he does, but instead of showing his artistic side or whatever all I thought his album did was show off his limitations.
