They're not. I think you might have to unbolt the motor mounts and jack the block up to get them out (which isn't actually that big of a deal). You have to do the same with turbo foresters and outbacks. If you have a spark plug socket with two pivoting joints it's much easier. The plugs are probably due for a change but it wouldn't be the first things I looked at. I would start by checking for any stored codes and making sure the cam and crank sensors and coilpacks are fully plugged in. Also does it make any funny noises or have a high idle when it's running?

Given that my cam is gouged beyond belief and leaks at the cam seal, I have decided to hit a pull it yourself on Friday and get two cams from sam's. What year cars can I pull them from for my 99 SOHC? Also, going for the Delta 2000 grind!

If you're getting the cams redone you could probably go for a PhaseII EJ22 set as well.

Throwout bearing, which is between the spinning pressure plate and stationary clutch fork. Holding the clutch down at stoplights put a lot more wear on it.

I never hold the pedal unless I know that it's a quick light or somebody is coming up on my rear really fast and I think that I'll have to move soon to avoid being rear ended.

The other red flag on this car that's gone through two clutches is that it's also on it's second set of tires, which look significantly worn. I'm bummed this one isn't gonna work out, as it's been tough to find one that meets my needs.

I looked over at nasioc, but thought I'd try here too. If I missed it in the thread, apologies. However, my 03 Subaru WRX (no mods) has an issue where the ABS seems to get confused. When it hits a patch of snow or ice, or when I slam on the brakes, the pedal dumps all the way to the floor, I get a grinding sound, and it locks up and slides. For the past few years, I didn't really notice it that much since I wasn't in ice and snow too often, but I was very lucky a few weeks ago while travelling in the snowy mtns and it did it. I ended up in a snow bank. Some have said find and pull the ABS fuse, but I figured I'd ask here to see if anyone had experienced or knew of this issue or had resolved it. I don't think Subaru issued a recall. I've just relocated, so I don't have a good, local mechanic yet and I'm not sure I want to take it to the dealer. I'm quite upset for personal safety reasons, but beyond that I bought the car specifically for mtn and inclement weather security, and this jeopardizes that quite badly.

I'm not very familiar with the 99 ECUs. No way to tell what that sound is from here but I would suggest downloading and running Learning View. The RomRaider forums have tons of info regarding beginner logging etc. My 05 STi is a 32 Bit ECU and requires logging feedback knock correction, fine learning knock correction, and ignition advance multiplier to get a clear view of knock. Learning View incorporates all of these into a stand alone app and is super easy to use. A 99 ECU most definitely has a different set of parameters and strategy.

I just traded in my 2010 GTI for a base '13 WRX 5dr, and I'm pumped! However, I'd like to replace the shift knob. What're some recommendations for one? For what it's worth, I've got the short throw shifter installed, so maybe I'm looking for something heavy?

WC Lathewerks has an array of options, I would at least check them out. I'm no manual expert but a heavier knob to increase mechanical advantage on a shorter lever makes sense to me from a physics standpoint.

I have a Lathewerks knob as well. Somewhat pricey but at least the dude is making them himself instead of banging goop into a mould somewhere in China and marking the price up 400%.

I signed up for my first auto-x ever in 2 weeks with my 02 WRX! I've got a second set of OEM ten spokes (16x6.5) and I've decided on the Direzza ZII, but what size should I get for street, auto-x, and maybe a track day: 205/55R16 (stock) or 225/50R16? The difference is only $5/tire. Stock suspension so far. E: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Dunlop&tireModel=Direzza+ZII for the tire specs. Anyone want to buy a set of Rally Armor flaps? Black with red logo that came off a 2009 WRX hatch. You will need to get some of the mounting hardware as I needed the stainless screws to replace the trim buttons they replaced. Dunno what they are worth, but they were on my car for about 3 months and I decided I did not like them.

Out of curiosity, since I'm cross shopping a lot of cars I was looking at the years of WRX and STIs and their features. I had a question. Were the earlier (for the USA at least) models really that much better for an enthusiast? They seems to be making a big deal of the switch from cable to drive by wire and other small things on sites and posts I've seen comparing the 03/04 to the 05+

And yes DBW sucks rear end unless you get a reflash that makes sure it does exactly what you want it to do, then it's pretty cool.

Why did I wait a year and a half to get an accessport? That thing is awesome. I've already started considering at least doing the intake if not the full stage 2 mods. Any recommendations on exhaust for an '11 sedan? Cobb doesn't have an exhaust system for the sedans, just a downpipe.

I'm really close to pulling the trigger on a new 2013 WRX Limited with SPT CBE and short throw shifter. I have a quote for $28523 + TTL to have it ordered, since apparently there are no dark gray 5 doors with leather anywhere in the country. Just can't decide if I want to wait for one to show up (maybe a lightly used one), or just put down the deposit and start the wait.

Start with the down pipe first, you'll be surprised how much juice you get out of that. If you get a new intake as well remember that you'll have to either get it retuned or hope that the Cobb off the shelf stage 2 map works for you. You're in the NY/NJ area right? You're relatively near to some excellent tuners.

Subaru is announcing a new performance model at the new york autoshow (starts in 3 days) which is likely the 2014 wrx. I would probably wait until that is announced, although you may not be able to wait until August/September for the new models to arrive.

Even if I order now, the car wouldn't arrive until July. The dealer is saying that if I don't order by April 1st, any orders will rollover into 2014 models and won't be delivered until September or later. You really think the 2014 is going to be any different? I thought a major revision would be for 2015 at the earliest. Anyway, thanks for the heads up. I'll probably wait for the NY show at least.

Just to recap...Homers BBBq posted:
I didn't mean to get advice and run. It has been crazy at work and I had a planned vacation right around the time everything above was happening. I take public transportation to work so I didn't have to do anything quick. Anyways, I got under the hood tonight. I could not find any serial numbers or part number on the turbo. However, it did jog my memory that when I had the 60k maintenance performed, they had to do a little work to get the turbo to connect to the intercooler correctly. I ended up with a rubber hose, two metal bands, and some random flange. See below: I'm guessing this isn't very common... this turbo was not made for this car. I also checked and the the up-pipe is definitely OEM. So I'm leaning towards someone blew up the turbo and just jammed in whatever for a quick sale and I took the bait. My plan is to start checking out NASIOC and legacygt for vf40s for sale. It doesn't seem very tough: http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/ct-vf40-oem-pump-ebcs-oem-up-pipe-204283.html?t=204283&highlight=vf40 http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2484115&highlight=vf40 I also found some recommendations for local shops on NASIOC, so I'm going to call them up and shoot the poo poo for a little and see what they recommend. If they sound legit, I'll have them do the work. So thanks again for the advice everyone. Bonus: On vacation, we got a free rental car upgrade to a mid-size and ended up with a legacy... ironic. It came with a CVT which was interesting but felt really slow. On the other hand, we only used 10 gallons the whole trip. I ended up getting this picture over Donner Lake in CA. Maybe I can get Subaru to pay me in parts for this picture... and yes the wheel was turned to the right on purpose.
