The song sample video that was floating around when Avalon was billing itself as "the NEW metal opera" didn't really get my hopes up. Just more buttfighter dragonlord wankery from Tolkki that has the misfortune of being performed by a few vocalists that I actually like. Yes, I'm still bitter about Symfonia too.

The weird apparent attempt to cash in on Avantasia seems to be, for better or worse, in name and marketing only.

As far as Avantasia goes...hey, I liked Sleepwalking. It's the best U2 song Tobias has ever written :colbert:

In all seriousness though I've been impressed by all I've heard from The Mystery of Time and only wish I could get my hands on a copy of the LE 2CD+Earbook that didn't cost an arm and a leg and cross-the-ocean shipping. Thanks for that one, Nuclear Blast.

I find I'm just not able to get into a rock opera other than The Who's Tommy.

I met Jennifer Sowle years ago at a Sonata Arctica concert in Fort Worth, we were in the same spot in line to get in. She was very nice, and was on a first name basis with Jens from Stratovarius, which I think helped get her into this side project of Timo's a year or two later. I didn't have the heart to say I didn't care for it, but I thought it was pretty cool that she got into a project like that. I didn't realize metal operas were such a recurring pursuit of his.

We all hung out after the show, and the ladies in our group got us all onto Sonata's bus by showing some skin. We got absolutely trashed with the band and had an amazing time.

Also, thanks to this thread, I am in love with Nekrogoblikon.

Their music is just so drat fun and catchy. There's a poll online to get them into the guest spot on this year's Summer Slaughter tour. The tour has several dates in Texas, so I'm going to try to go, especially if they get on (though it doesn't look likely at the moment).

It almost sounds like a new Immolation track, but one that they produced after listening to too much Ulcerate. Either way, I just listened to it six times in a row.

After this description I absolutely have to hear it. So far I think my favourite death metal of the year is the new Tribulation record. The weird, proggy twists it makes in songs like Suspiria have me hooked. I still have so much to check out from this year, but from what I have heard, nothing comes close to Tribulation or Light Bearer so far. With a few more spins, Wardruna might be up there. I definitely need to get on the Inter Arma and Intronaut releases. What have people been digging so far this year? My copies of the new Kvelertak and Voices albums should arrive tomorrow. I've been meaning to listen to Voices for ages but the incorrect tagging on spotify stopped me because I am a last.fm obsessive.

Wonder where I could find something else like Visor Om Slutet. I mean, it's acoustic, so it's really just a folk album. It's got a cool atmosphere, though.

e: First track reminded me of Helvete. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9detoHU-cMk
I gave it a listen and enjoyed Ett folk förbannat the most, nice tune. Whenever a new Finntroll album comes out I usually need some time for it to sink in.

And yes, I thought Visor om slutet was great too, I never understood the disdain that some fans had for it when it came out (ten years ago...).

The new Tribulation is loving killer. It was talked about a few weeks (?) ago and I didn't give it much thought at that time, but absolutely should have. I've got one metal-oriented friend who had never heard of them, and totally flipped his poo poo when I played it for him. When the Sky Is Black with Devils is the standout track for me, but its just phenomenal riffs from start to back. Same thing goes for the new Intronaut, different than what I had expected, but in a really, really good way.

Primitive Man's record Scorn is really good, but should probably be in the Stoner/Sludge thread. Howling's A Beast Conceived is pretty rad too.

You have good tastes. Scorn is a ripper album and tore my balls off.

Blood Duster is a pretty veteran grind/stoner rock/nu metal band (don't be put off by the nu metal tag). Snowy was awesome in it. Actually the acting was generally pretty decent, especially him, Lori and Cristofer. My biggest issues with it were mostly the WE'RE SO STEAMPUNK WE poo poo POCKET WATCHES outfitting, some of the goofy makeup, and some icky-looking camera work sometimes...plus most of the singing parts were being lipsynced by people who didn't even sing the parts originally. It was weird seeing Mats Leven's voice coming out of both Snowy and Thomas on different occasions.

I looked at some of the behind the scenes stuff though and by the look of it a lot of the work was done by students so I don't want to be too hard on it anymore, I was in that position once upon a time too and that considered they did a decent job :unsmith: It was silly, but it was fun, and they had fun making it.
