Doesn't seem like there is one, and that's bad. Writing isn't the most stable of all fields, even if you do well (Unless you write porn really well or something). People forget that job hunting IS a job in and of itself. Often, a full time one. For what it's worth, I would still go to your school's career center. I know ours sometimes had days where you could get your picture taken for LinkedIn and such. Ours will also work with you over e-mail if a phone call isn't really in the cards (Although... if that's the case, how do you expect to do on phone interviews?).

Thanks for the advice, Toebee. To be honest, it's only now that I'm taking my writing seriously. Or at least my fiction writing. I maintain a blog where I review current release films and occasionally do articles. Remember that Avengers thread on Cinema Discusso? I'm doing a follow-up and I'm up to five pages. I'm a lot more regular with my blog writing since I'm much more comfortable expressing my opinion through expository writing than creating something. Part of it was that there wasn't that many creative writing classes where I went to school. So my fiction writing has been for the most part put to the side while I flex my expository writing skills elsewhere. Anyway, I got an email from my school. The Peace Corps are going to do a presentation on campus April 11th. I'm going to be there. Might as well take advantage of that situation and find out for myself in person what they're all about.

Just got a call from my job agency-I've got a job. Tomorrow morning at a packing warehouse on the other side of town. I'm taking my bike to get around. I'm thinking this'll be an orientation. It's good that I got a hit. Wish me luck.

I just got back from work. I worked both the first and second shifts from 8 to 4. And I doubt I'll get a call back. I worked the best I could under the situations. But a couple of times I was completely overwhelmed. Warehouse work is on another level. The work was packaging and distributing PS3 peripherals and accessories. Twice I got overwhelmed on the line boxing remotes. At the end of the day, The most suprising thing was how all the on-site supervisors spoke only Spanish. I don't speak Spanish so, that was fun. Your goal is to get a job and move out. You've spent--what has it been, a month now?--"job searching." You have worked one day at a job and you're already looking to jump ship? I don't understand what you expect work to be, and moreso, why you get to jump the queue and skip any unpleasantness. Just chiming in to say congrats on finally finding a job, but don't you dare quit after one day! No job is 100% perfect and you should be ecstatic that someone finally hired you, especially in this lovely economy. You don't have to work in the warehouse forever, but at least stick around for a year as a starting point and then look around for something better. Your first job is usually never the best, but it provides you with the experience and connections to move up to something better in the future.

My mother-in-law was promoted to a management position and every single one of her employees only spoke Spanish. She picked it up in order to do her job. If you quit over this being too fast-paced and a bit of a language barrier, then you're an idiot. Be thankful you got a job at all. And unless you worked 8am-4am, you worked one shift. Not two.

First, second, and third shift were terms I learned from the job agency-I misused them. And I'm not leaving. I'm just waiting until I get a call. Thursday's an off day. If I go back, I'm working Friday and Saturday. I'll get a call tomorrow.

Yes, don't you dare quit. Any kind of picking/packing job will take you a little time to get into the swing of things, but your post comes across as 'OMG, putting things in boxes is soooo hard' after only one day. It is true that a few companies won't give you a chance to get up to speed and give you the boot but most will just crack the whip on occasion but let you carry on. And don't be such a big baby about not speaking Spanish.* I had two warehouse jobs one after the other one year. The first was peeling labels off of videos, the second was sticking labels on CDs. It was poo poo work. The second warehouse had a glass roof and it was the middle of summer. I came home every day thinking my brain was exploding due to the heat. I was over the moon when they promoted me to picking and post room packing because they had a fan and the staff there were more fun. And 8-4 is a normal and reasonable full shift. If they break it up into two shifts they may be flexible if you need time off for interviews for other jobs. *extra bonus: you can pick up some Spanish as well. At every job I've had the very strong instinctive response to quit after the first day so I know what you feel. Regardless, it is important that you give it a few weeks at least. e. Actually there was one job where I quit immediately because there is no way I'm going to spend 8 hours a day in a chest-high basement for $7/hour unless I am literally starving. It sounds like what he's doing is temp work, and it's not unusual for that to be on a day-to-day basis. I don't think he's talking about quitting (and I agree with y'all that he shouldn't, though the landscape's a little different with temp work), but they may well not call him back for another day. That's usually not a big deal as long as he shows up when he's called and at least tries to do the work. Temping is always a bit of a crapshoot, but in some ways it's a lot less stressful than other types of work; my attitude in my temp work days was that I can do drat near anything for a couple of days/weeks, while the prospect of doing some of those same jobs day in day out for the foreseeable future wouldn't have been appealing at all.

Just as an aside, I took temp work in a warehouse when I moved to my current town, and ended up as a regional Business Analyst with the company - stayed five years in the end. Never turn down an opportunity.

I'm also seconding the learn Spanish idea. Learning a new skill is never a bad thing and it could definitely benefit you in the future. Just teach yourself one or two words a day, then start with small phrases and you'll end up at least conversational.

I got my call back. I've been let go. Reason being according to the manager was that I wasn't experienced enough working in that kind of fast paced environment. So I immediately called my job agency and told them to make me avalilble for the next assignment. I know I've caught a lot of flack from this thread, but I can honestly say that I did the best I could. So yeah, back to the drawing board. I'm going to talk to my agency about Fed-Ex/UPS or a like packaging company next.
