New Sofie is on the shelves, they've changed the bottle to 750ml from 650ml for the same price. The new bottle reminds me of a wine bottle now. I can't wait to pick up a 4 pack.

so, i attended the first night of part one of Mekong's 18th anniversary celebration and tasted/drank quite a lot of beer, although some is not worth noting. best thing was 2009 Oak-Aged Yeti- incredibly rich, with nice accents of wood and chocolate, and ridiculously drinkable. much better than the 2009 Espresso Oak-Aged Yeti whose hops have become a weird, grassy aftertaste that doesn't mesh terribly well with the beer. it was still good, but not great. a little disappointed with Flanders Fred, a beer that i loved when it first came around, but the flavors seemed muted this time around. odd. the one i had a tough time finishing, though, was the Ola Dubh 18 year. a good beer by itself, but it was subjected to a wine barrel through B United's Zymatore project and the outcome was this odd, tart, slightly sour beer that was hardly related to the original. my friend really liked it, but he's a wine drinker, so maybe it was just me. oh, and Imperial Biscotti Break slipped through the cracks and was not on the menu, but i spotted the tap handle, so i got to drink in some of that Hershey's-style syrupy goodness. not a bad night, especially considering the minimal tab.

Today is a good day. Went to the local distributor for some beer. Found cases of Duck Rabbit Rabid Duck, and my yearly favorite, Weyerbacher's Heresy.. Still debating picking up the case of Speedway they have sitting there... and the case of Victory Oak Horizontal is also calling me.

Went to the same event as funkybottoms. '09 Backwood Bastard (or "Backwards Bastard" on their menu) was the highlight of my night, with ABT 12 on oak being the letdown--a fantastic beer, but I couldn't detect much oak at all and it didn't seem that far from the normal variety. Imperial Biscotti Break was also deliciously chocolate-filled and satisfying, though I won't be going out of my way to try getting a bottle. I do regret not getting the Brandy-aged Ovila and I hope it's still there when I head back. The folks I went with pussied out at like 9:30 so I didn't have the opportunity to try anything else.

Then again, I'm not a big fan of it fresh. The hops definitely die down and it comes off far more British than American at a certain point.

Red Thunder and Oak Horizontal did nothing for me. I have a White Monkey, but my hopes aren't high. A beer I just fell in love with, though, is Port Brewing's Board Meeting. This has a prominent coffee and syrupy chocolate flavor and aroma that are my weaknesses in beer. This reminds me a bit of Bourbon County Coffee actually, minus the oak and bourbon notes. I am going to buy a few more of these ASAP.

Large hop presence (still) and way too hot on the finish. I was hoping for something along the lines of Nemesis'10, and this was not along those lines.

It's so rare to see it on tap around here that I always make a point of going out of my way to have a taste. I really enjoy the sherry cask. It drinks almost like a port. The lagavulin cask was a bit of a disappointment. I think it picked up too many competing flavors and just didn't work for me. And I love lagavulin so it was almost a double disappointment. I have yet to see the calvados cask on tap anywhere around here but I do have a 2010 bottle in the cellar that I've been saving.

Hmmm, I'm wondering if having too much to drink beforehand skewed my perception of it. It was pretty far into the lineup of a tasting I attended over at a friends house. It was just so drat smooth tasting at the time that it didn't come off hot in any way. On the other hand, when I had Dark Intrigue when it was fresh, it tasted like drinking a thick, silky bourbon. It was super hot, and I never bought another bottle as a result, although I kind of wish I would have, because I'm sure it settled down quite a bit.

I dunno, I think Oberon is pretty delicious, but to make a big fuss over its release is ridiculous. It's a good beer, but it's not outstanding. More like something reliable that I'm going to enjoy that's widely on tap (but not in CO  ). Two Hearted is indeed better, but as far as a seasonal you can do way worse than Oberon. Also, I personally love GI's kolsch as a summer beer. It's probably partially because I grew up in Chicago, but it's just so easy to drink and has a perfect crisp, sweet flavor that goes well with a moderately humid Midwest evening.Had another glass of Enjoy By  on tap for lunch today for my birthday. Still really good. If one were to brew a tea with fresh-picked hops, it might kinda taste like that... and I like it.(Too bad Parry's is already on their last keg and most stores in the area are sold out.)
