I hope that if they do this, they add their own Paradox-touch to the game instead of just trying to remake MOO or MOM directly. Playing Paradox's games has really spoiled me on the way they treat internal politics and the formation of empires to the point that it feels off to have a globe-spanning nation in Civilization 4 without ever really suffering discontent as long as you manage your happiness resources and culture sliders accordingly.

I tried playing another game with my friend now with the latest 1.33.18 CK2+, but we kept crashing after January 1st 1134. I went back and tried making a save each month, and I got CTDs on any save after April 1st 1133. I started up a new game in single player, observer mode, and got a CTD on January 1095. Anyone have any ideas about what could cause CTDs whenever I save? I'm going to try again in vanilla in case it's CK2+ but I'm sure this time my CK2+ is up to date with the patch.

Yeah, that's why I called it a stereotype. I thought it was exaggerated and I didn't think it was quite like that so the stream chat rather surprised me. Not that stream chats of all kinds aren't invariably bad, this is just a peculiar kind of bad for a game stream. I guess if you make a game about countries people are going to be real serious about countries.

As much sense as that makes, it feels kind of bothersome, in that normally you keep vassals because it's too costly to maintain the provinces yourself so they are better handled with autonomy. It's a switch from administrative upkeep to diplomatic upkeep, but it still seems to defeat the point of reducing your costs.

Vassal swarm was far and away the best strategy in EU3, to the extent if you played against other humans it was the only valid strategy.
It absolutely needed to have limits, the interesting thing is it's now part of a general limit on total diplomatic deals not that there is now a vassal cap.

I really like the sound of the diplo cap. It makes keeping vassals more of an actual decision and also prevents guarantee spam and makes you more choosy about allies. From the sound of a few comments Johan made on the stream, vassals give you more of their income than they did previously (they give a percentage of their total income now, rather than just part of their taxes) so they should be worth the cost.

Good day what ho cup of tea
To those who just bought Darkest Hour and want to learn it:

Don't immediately mod the game. (this advice goes for pretty much any game, really) Kaissereich is a good mod, but it still has a lot of bugs and it's tougher to judge whether you're actually playing well or not if there's no history to compare yourself to.

Start by playing the 1936 scenario as Germany. Germany is a great newbie country because you're in control of World War 2 - nothing happens until you're ready for it, and you have the easy war against Poland to get used to war before you take on France and Russia.

There are a few things to know about before you play as anyone in Darkest Hour. First is the manpower system. You only really get manpower while you're mobilized. You only really mobilize while at war. You start with the framework of an army, with lots of manpower-starved units. Therefore, if you let your units reinforce before you mobilise, they'll suck up all your manpower and you won't be able to build anything. So, go into the economy screen, turn on AI control of industry, and untick the box that lets the AI assign IC (industrial capacity) to reinforcing units. When you go to war, make sure you turn that back on and prioritise it.

While on this screen, turn on automated trade and tell it to stockpile money. Leave the other resources as they are.

Next, technology. In Darkest Hour, technology has an appropriate year, so if you try to research 1940 industry in 1936, it'll go very slowly. Always focus on industry techs, then units, then doctrines last. This is because you only need doctrines while at war. When you get close to war and during war, bring your doctrines up to date - they implement instantly and cost nothing to do so, while a new unit model will take ages to upgrade into.

Next, policy sliders. Germany pretty much becomes the ultimate war society without you having to do anything, except in one regard - free market versus central planning. Free market is a lot better than central planning, so use your slider moves to move toward it.

The intelligence screen is pretty much worthless to you, don't worry about it.

More later, hope that helps for now.

Germany can't go full market.

The reason it's better is that production time and costs are 15% cheaper and faster.

Pimpmust
Oct 1, 2008

It's mostly the cheaper upgrade costs that make free market&proffessional military A LOT better than central planning/drafting, there's really little point to gearing bonuses once you have a big army up and running.
Central planning and such should make reinforcements cheaper (IC and manpower costs) or something.

Wonder if that'd be good enough troll bait.

On a serious note, Switzerland should be 3 culture groups and should have a NI that makes it easier for cultures to be accepted. The Reformation should trigger special events for civil war.

New Vicky 2 dev diary!

quote:

Hello and welcome to the 6th and final DD for HoD, today I’m going to tell you about the changes we’ve made to Industry and a few misc changes that weren’t mentioned yet in earlier DDs.
Let’s look at Industry first, the main change here is factories now get a Throughput bonus when built in a state that produces their input goods, which encourages clusters of related industry. So, for example, a state that produces Iron and Coal is an ideal place for a Steel mill, which is then a good spot for Artillery and Car factories, and eventually Tanks can be built there. This bonus can be up to 25% if all the factory’s inputs are produced locally. For basic factories the bonus is evenly split between input types, but for the more advanced factories which use both manufactured goods and raw materials the bonus is weighted towards the manufactured goods.

Another change with factories is they are now able to scale back production before firing workers if they are not making a profit. By cutting back they can make it through brief periods of non-profitability without causing mass unemployment, which may cause workers to move away or find another job.
Finally, Capitalists have had their build choices improved, and will now better remember what factories have been recently closed and avoid rebuilding them. They will also reserve some factory slots to build factories that are invented later in the game.
While we’re shown this in screenshots, I’m not sure if we’ve explained that railways are now shown on the normal mapmodes, not just on infrastructure mode, and they now form dynamic links to nearby provinces rather than every province connecting to every other. The effect of railways are unchanged, they just look better and are more visible now.

Cities and factories also visibly grow on the map as their population and level of industry increases, here's a shot of the same area a bit later:

We’ve also made a change to the Civilising process. Now, by taking any of the first four military reforms, you gain the ability to get Research points through conquest (both taking states and annexing nations). The amount of RP gained is based on the number of these reforms you have passed, and the RPs produced in the area taken, for conquering more advanced areas gives you a better result. This means you don’t just have to sit about waiting on Research Points, you can go out and take them! We have also capped the amount of RP an Uncivilised nation can store at 25,000, so you can no longer save up enough points to pass all reforms in one go.
The last change I’m going to mention today is that you receive a 100% boost to influencing your Satellite and Dominion nations, which makes it a lot easier to keep them in your SoI:

Next week we’ll have some beta AARs for you to read. Oh, and in case you have missed it, the release date for HoD has been set for April 16th!

I hope it shows what goods the state produces in the same menu you build factories, so I don't have to switch back and forth from the map/menu and click on every province to see what they produce.

What options are available to you when you have a country in your SoI? It's been a while, but one of the things I didn't like about in my V2 Japan->GEACP game was having to keep China in my SoI to prevent the West from sniping at it, but not being able to conquer/assimilate it into my empire at the same time. Admittedly, it's probably down to game balance, but I felt like you should be able to get deeper than that when lording it over other nations.

You get a relations hit with the other great powers and it auto cancels the non aggression pact with Germany which doesn't matter since between France and Yugoslavia they're not going to hit until you until 41 anyway. Germany also seems to love throwing units at you via Norway so being able to quickly push them back to the narvik strip of land is going to free up units for you to use on the eastern front.

I'm loving the factory changes. My question, though, would be: do capitalists take a state's raw materials into account when deciding what kind of factories to build there, in order to take advantage of the bonuses? Put another way: are my dumb capitalists actually smart enough to build a steel factory in a province rich in coal and iron?

If it's like EU3, you should be able to just install the beta patch over the game files in steam\steamapps\common. If Steam is automatically updating the game and undoing the patch or something like that, just copy the game folder to a new location outside of Steam.

I got Darkest Hour yesterday, and have been having a good time thus far. I can't help noticing some really goofy stuff, though. For instance, USA declared war on Italy, and thus all the Axis without joining the Allies. And then Yugoslavia joined the Axis, left the Axis, declared war on the USA, and then on the Netherlands. The gently caress? In any case it gives me a good chance to invade them as Hungary.

Oh and Italy joined the war early and Germany invaded Denmark/Norway before the low countries, but those are reasonable enough.

This happened in real life.

Darkest Hour does tend to go off-the-rails slightly more than vanilla Hearts of Iron, but some stuff (like the US declaring war independently of the rest of the Allies) tend to work out later, as the AI will eventually join the Allies. Same with Italy not joining the Axis during the invasion of France, etc.

For the cases where it doesn't, I usually don't feel bad about tag-switching and declaring war/joining an alliance when necessary. Like in my current Soviet Union game, Germany just kinda forgot to Barbarossa me, so I helped them out a little. Now I'm getting curbstomped.

Yeah the German ai in DH is weird but I'd have to say somewhat intelligent for usually knowing attacking the soviets is a bad idea. Though then it will go and do dumb things like in the soviet game where I gave it a bunch of IC plus resources to power them, it decided Norway to Finland to me was the best possible invasion route. That was incredibly annoying since the whole point of it was to be a challenge instead of watching them rush for archangel and the easiest encirclement ever.

Generally speaking if a country is ideologically compatible and ends up at war with a common enemy, they tend to end up in the appropriate alliance after a bit in any case.
