My buddy just picked up a '95 Virago 535 with 750 miles on it for about 2k. Is he going to kill himself on it? He's really excited about it.

No, but he might consider killing himself for spending 2k on a virago.

(I kid, but that sounds pretty overpriced for something so ugly and slow)

I would definitely like to have one of those in my garage someday. Is it any good as a motorcycle? Is it objectively attractive? Who cares, it's designed by Philippe Starck! :allears:

(I honestly do like the exhaust on it though)

He's psyched, getting his learners this week with plans to take the MSF in a month or two. I'm hoping we get to take a ride soon, but I don't want him to push it to much.

Any thoughts on the BMW K75 as a 2nd bike - not necessarily this one but more the bike in general?

I like how it looks, the power level, the expected reliability, and the quirkiness of the longitudinal triple. Will it be hard to find parts? Can you put decent tires on it?

I recently got an 88 K75C (no lower fairing, higher bars) with 15k on it for $2200. What bike are you coming from? It's a nice bike, not super fast, and it is a little top heavy, but the engine is smooth as silk. The transmission on the other hand is kinda clunky, but after a while you get use to it. Also it doesn't seem super tall, but it keeps my feet at the same level as my old KLR, there are low seats that alot of people seem to like available. Ask him when the last time the splines were lubed, clutch side and output shaft. It's the only thing that really ever fucks up on these bikes, but when it does its expensive to fix. Most people do it bi-annually or every 20k.

This forum is kinda slow but has very knowledgeable people. http://www.motobrick.com/ Check the workshop section to see the kinds of problems people are having, most of them aren't that bad. Also this bike shares an amazing amount of parts with BMW cars of the same age, I just fixed a leaky oil pressure switch with the same thing from a 84 318i, which was cheaper than the bike part and my local Autozone had it in stock.

edit: looks like that bike has the low seat on it already

Well, if I lived in Ireland I'd be all over that.

coming from a buell blast so the clunky tranny is no biggie. how does it handle? does it need emulators and new rear shocks?

Pokey Araya
Jan 1, 2007
It handles like a 25 year old fatty to be honest. It's not something you're going to be tearing up the twistys with, but it is rock solid on the freeway, and it's enjoyable on slower roads. I think you would enjoy it commuting or touring. As far as suspension mods, some people put a k1100 (I think I'm on my phone) front end that has nicer forks, bigger brakes and you can run a bigger tire. As far as the rear, the paralever upgrade is the way to go. In its stock form it's quite manageable, you just have to remember it is an older bike, and it's not a racing bike. All that being said, I love mine and I'm going to ride it until it dies, which may be at 200k, as a lot of these bikes make it that far if you keep up with the final drive maintance.

Asking $5500 with 12k miles, just had 12k mile service. Realllly tempting but having two bikes right now seems like a bad idea and I've only had my ZX14 for a few months so I'd hate to sell it already.

These things are impossible to find, much less so for such a low price.

Aw man, I love my Streety but if that was in my area I might be tempted to sell it to afford that thing. I can only imagine the hoonery it's capable of.

There is no sportbike that can out-fun a supermoto, even a quasi-moto like that one.

I thought the 690SMC was the ultimate supermoto that didn't involve engine rebuilds every 5 miles?

Jul 21, 2007

I think the point is Z3n is a space cowboy on the edge of a frontier unknown to man, he's out there pushing the limits, trail braking into the abyss. Finding out where the edge of the razor is, turning to face the darkness and revving his 690 into it's vast gaze. You gotta live this to learn it bro.

Woops, well I'm glad I didn't buy it now.

In other news the local dealership had their CB1100 out on the floor today. The red paint is much better in person. I sat on it briefly and it felt nice, but hard to say whether I'd regret it without being able to test ride.

The R1200c is an oddball bike. It's got a bit of a cult following, but on the surface, it's not much to write home about. 61 hp and 560 lbs. It's literally a BMW Harley that has real suspension and brakes. Price isn't bad, but I'd be curious what the "ABS issue" actually is.

I've actually kind of looked at them on and off as a potential cruiser, it's certainly not something you'd see coming the other way very often, ~4k or so seems like a fair price. Kind of a hard sell when you can get an R1150R naked with ~80hp in the same year range for about that price, or spend a little more and start finding R1200Rs with 115hp.
