Come back, go to combine some things, notice the Power/Armorcharms could be combined with the Talon. Does the Powertalon stack with the Powercharm? How big a boost does it give in comparison?

The talons do stack with the charms, yes. Having both is the equivalent of attack/defense up M. Individually, a talon is just short of a attack/defense up S, while the charms are about a third of that.

Whats a good armor for being a hammer bro? Alternatively, what should I be looking for in an armor? I'm HR3 and have all these assorted monster parts but I've only made a Great Jaggi, Great Wroggi, and partially made a lagiacrus armor because I have everything but a lagi plate.

I always liked the Duramboros set in P3rd. I'd probably say anything that gives you a boost to how quickly you KO monsters, Attack/Defense Up, and maybe Sharpness +1. Doubt you'll get all of those on any one set, but aiming for just about any of those is probably fine and dandy. Otherwise, just use whatever you like the looks of and has the best defenses for the situation.

I'm completely new to Monster Hunter. I've got a Wii copy of Tri sitting around that I got for $15 with the classic pro controller and found it a little inaccessible but I've heard nothing but good things about it and it seems like it probably should be pretty great. I just ordered the 3DS Ultimate version today to give it a proper go, since the Wii is a little unreliable and apparently they turned off multiplayer for Tri. I was hearing that this beginners guide is really good for getting into the game on the right foot and in the right frame of mind. Has anyone got any experience with that guide? I feel a little weird spending even more money on this game when I'm not even sure I'm into it, and buying strategy guides seems crazy to me in 2013.

Between the wiki and this thread, you shouldn't need the guide.

They seem to have done a lot of copy/paste from the Tri guide. Fadeslash/Roundslash are LS moves. Gauge is probably the spirit gauge.

xK1 is correct for now, but they are releasing a thing in April for the 3ds versions to use a Wii U to get online. Problem is that it will require a usb to lan adapter, so it'll probably just be better to get the Wii U game instead.

'Extra' or 'No' elemental damage to them? I was looking up damage formula's earlier this morning and it seems that each monster has a elemental defense to plug into the formula; which tells me that it's possible to deal elemental damage to them if they're neutral or even resistant.

Granted, this was for MH Tri; not Ultimate, so I don't know if anything changed from the two versions.

It depends on what you mean by "weak". Bosses (more specifically their parts) all have %values or each element that determines how much damage they take from that element. Most(all?) bosses have one or more elements [all but Dragon in G.Jaggi's case] that they take higher % of damage from than the others, and many have one or more elements that they take 0% damage from (usually no more than 1).

Weak can refer to the element they are most damaged by, or it can refer to them taking any damage at all from that element (usually the former). I prefer to say that they are resistant to an element if they take damage from it but are more weak to other elements.

Take Barioth's head:

30% Fire, 10% Water, 0% Ice, 25% Thunder, 15% Dragon

This means that if your weapon deals 100 elemental damage, if fire it will deal 30 damage, 10 if water and so on. Thus Barioth is "weak" to fire and thunder, "resistant" to water and dragon and immune to ice. In this case, only an ice element will deal no extra damage over raw.

Some enemies take more or less damage depending but even on Brachydios, who takes longer than most to slime and takes less damage, slime is ridiculous. I really should make different armor or weapons, but my Brachy gear is just too good.

Edit to expand a bit on why Slime is so good: Monhan really likes it when you deal all your damage to one spot. It rewards you with flinches, giving you even more chances to deal more damage. Slime doesn't care where you hit the monster it'll build until it goes off, dealing all of its damage to the spot you just hit. Which causes flinches, which lets you build more slime and cause more flinches. With a little luck and much less precision than other weapons, slime lets you lock a monster down in multiplayer.

Thanks for the info -- I tried playing around with the Switch Axe last night, and although the weapon had good visual and audio feedback, it just didn't mesh with my playing style.

I did play with some weapons here and there, and finally came back to the SnS. It's a very quick and fast weapon, and for some reason it seems to have an insane amount of capability to proc effect status effects. Damage seems a bit lacking, but I think I could make up for it by having multiple elemental weapons until I can get my slime sword. Being able to bounce around from place to place and get in with a few quick hits and get out before the Wyvern can react feels real good.

Did the model-less equipment make it in from Tri? Or piercings for that matter? I don't really care for any of the helmets (Minus the pumpkin one), but I also don't want to lose out on the defense/slots that they provide.

Agnaktor armor is a good set for gunlance in general. Razor sharp or speed sharpening like the guy above me said is pretty invaluable for gunlance since shelling blows through sharpness, and it also has Guard +1 which is handy for blocking anything and everything.

Brachydios: The developers' way of saying 'gently caress you' to people who use weapons without shields. I brought in 30 healing items, I came out with 1. The amount of parts required for armor and weapons keeps going up. Means if I want either a weapon or god forbid his armor, I'll have to fight him a good dozen or so times. I don't want to fight him a second time! At least not with a Hammer. Might bring a Greatsword in next time so I can at least block. He just has too many instant moves where, no matter where you stand, you're gonna get smashed.

Please say his armor's no good so I can just make a slime SNS or something and be done with him until whatever require fights are needed in the future. Some monsters are fun to fight against. With a Hammer at least, Brachydios is not one of them.

It didn't help that, for some reason, despite me changing his mask before the fight, Cha-Cha reverted back to the Felyne mask. So every time I'd almost get a three hit combo/pound off on Brachy, a bomb would come sailing through the air to knock me away. I took that mask off you for a reason, ya little rear end in a top hat!

What's good armor to make for fighting Brachy? Been running around in HR Wroggi and beefing it up fairly well. Think I have enough Hard Spheres to get one more full round of upgrades off, if it's even worth doing. Was kinda hoping the Jhen fight would've happened by now, honestly. Charging means a lot of hits, which means your sharpness is going down very, very quickly. It's good for a big chunk of damage on a toppled or trapped monster, but just keep in mind that you'll have to sharpen pretty much immediately after. Both types of lance are great weapons, but they can both be hell on sharpness.

Brachydios is one of the more annoying fights because he's cut from the "small and spastic" template instead of "slow and lumbering." The thing about it though is that it felt a lot worse trying to block rather than evade. I switch between greatsword, gunlance and switchaxe and by far and away the switchaxe has been the best weapon to fight him with for me. It's way, way easier to just be evasive; his punches and leaps are pretty predictable, but the problem is, particularly when he's enraged, you'll find a lot of explosions/slimes slipping through blocks because it nicked you in the back or side. The upside is that he's really fragile. It feels like he's got no health at all, so even though you'll only get a good lick in every once in a while, they all count for a lot. You want a lot of speed when fighting him.
