Are there any goons down in Angola these days? We might be going there this summer, was wondering what it is like if/when you go ashore.

I worked with some FSRs that worked rigs out of Angola and they did not paint a very flattering picture but that was a few years ago.

Heard about these, with the new emissions rules diesel and old steam ships are dead in their current form. Was really hoping for steam, reciprocating is so boring.

Most of the projects I've seen so far are dual-fuel, LNG with a bit of The ECA rules coming into effect are going to make LNG a whole lot more common for coastal vessels. There just isn't enough low sulfur fuel to go around economically, and I don't really expect that to change soon. Apparently the stuff isn't as profitable to refine as good old HFO; you end up losing some of the more valuable fractions while regular HFO was just a byproduct of the regular cracking process. Edit: Wrong kind of fuel! FrozenVent fucked around with this message at 15:44 on Mar 5, 2013 |

Natural gas recips are basically a diesel they put spark plugs and a pre combustion chamber in. The Wartsila 20v34SG's I worked on were adapted from their diesel line. They are very nice to work with, they are just so clean.

I got asked to explain the layout of my last ship and got asked various questions about items of machinery as I mentioned them, I got asked about the marpol annexes, I got several questions on boiler safeties, several on freshwater delivery and the hydrophores, a few things on safety, focussing on the emergency fire pump and ventilation. In hindsight, they were all easy questions that I should have nailed, but I was so loving nervous I took a long time to answer each one. Shovelbum, you're it, I don't think we even have another cadet in here.

Is it pretty easy for newly qualified officers to get a job in North America? Here in the UK I have heard it can be difficult to get a contract as a new officer but once you get your first stamp it's easy after that; the advice here is always to take the first job offer no matter what it is for that reason.

Did someone save the boiler dick? There's a guy in India that puts all sorts of poo poo from scrapped vessels on eBay, it's amazing. Mostly stuff like flags, barometers, sextants, IMO stickers... Once in a while though you'll see sometime weird like a lot of two immersion suits for $40 or something, it's pretty awesome. Lots of soviet sextants flying around for some reason...

Holy poo poo everything about boats is great. So I go to work on a boat. What I learn about my actual job on the boat has loving zero to do with boats. My daily work is not boating, it's a job that sucks and actually makes me hate whatever it is I used to love about boats. All I want to do when I'm off work is to be as far away from boats as humanly possible. But the only thing I'm trained to do is to work on a god damned boat, so I'm chained to it for life. Why is it not surprising to me that a lawyer basically wrote deckofficer.txt?
