Hey everyone, let me tell you about how to get into rap in the most logical way: I personally listened to Linkin Park at the very height of their popularity, and then began to delve into more and more classics while still listening to Linkin Park. Therefore it's patently ridiculous that a young person would listen to the wu tang clan, and I can't fathom why they would listen to such old weird crap
.

I didn't say it was crap lol. Wu-Tang was one of my favorite groups but I didn't start with them, and until now, never heard of anyone that did. But keep making poo poo up if you'd like.

This battle of "concerned white media" versus rap has already been adressed by better people than you or I, so I'm not really going to go into it again.

I'd just like to say Ross deserves more shame for promoting a lifestyle and image that he was never really a part of and which as a corrections officer he definately loving knows the consequences of.

I gotta see him on the tour next month. I've seen Ghostface three times and he's one of the best live performers I've seen. He's a perfectionist. At one show he kept bitching about the mixing, and giving the sound guy suggestions that he wasn't taking(and Ghost was right, the mix was poo poo). He wound up leading the crowd in a chant of "gently caress the sound guy".

On the "why is everyone mad at Rick Ross and Tyler for their lyrics about rape but not their lyrics about killing people" topic... it might have racial undertones and the white media obviously cherry-picking issues blah blah reductivism blah blah etc etc, but I think it also has a lot to do with it being much more likely that Rick Ross actually has date raped women vs. that Rick Ross has actually killed people. Not saying he HAS raped anyone, but that is more in the realm of feasibility than him having actually murdered anyone (same goes for many rappers).

It's still a glorification of those actions. It doesn't matter if he's actually killed someone; he's still desensitizing his audience to the idea.

People are more apt to angrily say "I'm gonna kill that motherfucker" then "I'm gonna go to the club and rape some bitch". It probably has something to do with America's desensitization to violence.

Even better is to question why the labels let them conduct free speech, and rap about such topics until something like when Lil Wayne
used Emmitt Till's name in a line, it becomes controversial. Or Eminem's lyrics about Columbine High School being blanked out in the MMLP.
I remember my copy of "Death Row's Greatest Hits" having 2pac saying "cops" being censored when talked about in violent context,
and Ice Cube's use of "Jew" being censored on their songs ("Pour Out A Little Liquor", "No Vaseline") but only on the Death Row
released versions.
I also remember the group Twiztid having their first album re-released on Def Jam back in 1998, and they made them
censor the line "we need to burn the white house", which wasn't censored on the independent release.
Major labels censor explicit albums all the time, they pick and choose what's considered too controverslal,
but still let some foolishness loose.

Also, on Juvenile's "400 Degreez".
"Gone Ride With Me", "Welcome To The Nolia", "UTP" all have violent lyrics (mainly of homocidal nature) censored on them.

The reason Rick Ross is in hot poo poo for the date rape thing is because the entire country is getting in a flurry about sexual assault policies at colleges and the perpetration of "rape culture." Additionally, murder victims usually aren't around to complain about Ross glorifying killing. Rape victims on the other hand are around, and most people know at least one person who has been raped.

What the gently caress is all this talk about America. People in general view rape as worse than murder. Look at the way rapists are treated in prisons, look at the way people in Muslim countries "protect" their women. Us guys are meant to be able to protect ourselves and that's why when a guy gets killed, its not big news. Shooting a guy in the face? Hell that poo poo happens everyday. But women being killed/raped? That poo poo isn't on because they're helpless. We live in a sexist world where women are perceived as weak and men should be able to take care of themselves/not die.

It is easy to pick one line of with an obvious date rape reference and criticize it. But the violence in hiphop isn't wanton, it is nuanced and you have you have to specify what violence you are criticizing. A lot of violent content is about self-defense and I've always wondered why it is bad for rappers to defend themselves but not in other forms of media. Then, you have people like Biggie or Pac who talk about violence, but they are describing the desperate situation they live instead of willy nilly shooting. You can't criticize hundreds of artists and songs the same way and most don't bother. You end up using the same arguments as for movies or what not.
