Well then, you unstylish assholes, have a poorly lit bathroom in gold trim and black marble, and an upstairs bedroom's awesome ceiling/lighting! Anyhow, looking at that first picture, it appears I was wrong: the laundry room window actually looks into the bathroom from above the tub.

Wow. I thought it was odd when some friends of the family were using their sunroom as another bedroom for their kids, but that seems almost normal in comparison. I don't have any pictures, but it was basically a closed-in glass sunroom, with a metal roof and all. There was a sliding glass door between the sunroom and the kitchen, and a regular door between the sunroom and the hallway. There was also a window into the bedroom next door. Some of the windows were covered with curtains, but they didn't have enough to cover everything. I remember they had lace curtains on the sliding glass door, so if you were in the kitchen you could stare straight into the bedroom.

Has anyone here dealt with Irish Travelers before? My dad grew up near their biggest US community in Murphy SC, and he told me a few horror stories after a group showed up at the golf course he manages near Hilton Head Island offering to repave the clubhouse's sidewalk. My dad knew what was up though and turned the guy away. A few days later there was an article in the paper about someone being ripped off with some lovely tarmac work.

Buying a house in Yonkers, and I had a ton of trouble getting insurance just because the electrical work was so hosed up. It's a two family home, with a split panel giving each unit 60 amps. Federal Pacific fuse boxes of course. Also, every single outlet has the ground and neutral wires mixed up. I didn't even bother to ask whether a pro or "handyman" had done it, it's not relevant at this point. The sellers were shocked that I wanted a credit to fix all of it. I initially thought of changing the outlets myself, but I wouldn't gently caress with panels, especially since I can't call the city myself and get them to turn off the power. The sellers kept trying to tell me to use somebody they know, who'd do it for $800 so they didn't have to give me a huge credit. Not licensed of course. $800 to get a service upgrade, new 200 amp split panel, and replace about 25 outlets? Sounds legit. I'm sure it wasn't the guy who hosed up the outlets in the first place either. I'm actually going with reputable pros I know who do everything right the first time, and they're also moving the meters to the outside. $3600 total, but well worth it for the piece of mind.

I have a story from an old apartment I lived in: It was a new building and I was the first tenant to live in the apartment. Shortly after moving in, I started hearing a high-pitched beeping sound. My immediate thought was that a smoke detector was running out of batteries, but none of the smoke detectors I could find were making the sound. I checked my apartment, the garage next to me, the neighbor's apartment. Nothing. I complained to the landlord and got no action. Eventually I just stopped hearing it. Whenever I would have company over they would immediately ask about the beeping and I'd briefly become conscious of it and tell them I had no idea what it was. A few people refused this explanation and tried to find it themselves, but ultimately none did. When I decided to move out and into another place with my then-girlfriend, the landlord came over to give an inspection. His first question: what's that beeping? I nearly lost my temper and explained that it was the sound I had complained about several times but could never find. He walked up to a wall and turned around with a smile. "I know what it is." Apparently, when they were building the building, they had to meet some sort of code requirement and had to place a second stairway in the house. As soon as the inspection was done, they walled up the stairway. That new wall was part of my apartment. In that walled off stairway was a smoke detector they had left inside. They were going to have to knock down a wall in order to get that smoke detector. Assholes. Total Party Kill fucked around with this message at 21:16 on Apr 1, 2013 |

Crossposting from the PYF Funny Pictures thread:Bonk posted:My apartment's full of weird/stupid poo poo like this. Observe: A few more I just took: The full cabinet behind the mirror. Not necessarily weird on its own, but that there are three adjacent lightswitches and then an outlet just sort of wherever the hell they felt like building one is a bit odd. And yet just below the trio of lightswitches and random outlet is a cable jack (in a hallway), somewhat out of place phone jack, and three of these 4-pronged outlets I've never seen anywhere else. I'm sure they have a use in some Asian country, but this is in western Canada. Not sure if you can see it, but the plate for the switch is cut off so they could put the shower door track right next to it. I assume it turns on that light in the shower. Just a great idea all around. This groovy stained glass and stairway bannister is simply a window between the living room and the kitchen, bordered by two olde-tymey lantern lights for no discernible reason. You can only open the ceiling hatch to the attic by cranking that lever a bunch of times. It works like a corkscrew, so it takes a very long time to open. That's seriously the only way up there. Exposed outlet in the kitchen, right next to a regular one that actually goes in the wall like it's supposed to. Also of note: -There are 3 suites in this building, and all of them - including the front door - can be opened by one single key. -There is an area downstairs that could be an extremely disjoined 4th suite: There are two storage rooms, a laundry room, and a bathroom, but all are interrupted by a hallway and a small lobby/stairwell. -I forgot to take a picture of this, but nearly ALL of the overhead lights are fluorescent tubes recessed into the ceiling in these little cubby holes lined with what looks like aluminum foil. [edit]Got pictures of that last one: \/\/\/Okay, that's especially odd then, because every room in the house has THREE of them right next to each other. That shed is loving awesome. I fully expect that monstrosity will be a soggy pile of sawdust before the winter. Even if it doesn't rain at all, the moisture it pulls out of the wet ground should be more than enough to topple it. The GF and I purchased the back half of an 8 year old duplex in the Commercial Drive area a little over 2 years ago. It was during the construction boom, so while not unsafe, it was built very much on the cheap. I've spent the last 2 years slowly learning the basics of home repair by fixing the more egregious issues. The biggest problem we had was some surface mold in the attic. The 2nd floor bathrooms are vented through the soffit, so I thought some of the moist air was being blown back into the attic through the vents. It turns out the lazy shitheel builders had only pointed the run at the soffit vent, leaving a 3-4 inch gap. They had not actually attached the loving run, possibly because the pitch of the roof was too steep at that point to easily access the soffit connection. I ended up re-running the exhaust directly up through the roof. It was still a great deal, even with all the construction issues. There's a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment in a new building 4 houses up from us going for $70k more than we paid for our 3-bedroom, 2.5 bath with private back yard and detached garage.

I'm not sure if I'm more upset at them, or at the home inspector who didn't find anything wrong with the place.
