Yes.
So I'm trying out the Gloryhammer debut at the moment.

The first song (after the mandatory spoken intro) is titled The Unicorn Invasioin of Dundee, and the first line of lyrics in its chorus goes "Fireballs of lightning are raining from the sky". Other songtitles include Magic Dragon, The Epic Rage of Furious Thunder, and a bonus track Wizards!. (yes, the ! is part of the title.)

The best thing though is that this stuff is actually legit pretty good, if you're not allergic to euro flower-power cheese. Sounds appropriately bombastic instead of cheap or half-assed, the songs are pretty catchy and the vocalist has some real pipes.

I mean, I'm not gonna play the poo poo out of this or anything, but it's certainly worth a spin if you're feeling silly and want some completely shameless cheese.

I didn't even know Thebon had left the band, but apparently Obsidian Claw (Arnt) is doing vocals now (clean and harsh). It can't be as bad as Reptilian, right? I mean, it won't be Armada, but I can't have everything.

Edit: They are also signed to some Indian label with three bands (including them, the other two being Indian). Who hosed that up? Ugh, so we won't see a tour for awhile unless they saved up their money..

I think it's time to resurrect the Aptorian Demon album's promotional blurb:

quote:

For those unaware of what Aptorian Demon is, Ghash the main individual behind, is the original Keep of Kalessin singer/guitarist from the demo and 2 first albums which later the rest members stole the name and continued their own gay path. This is how KOK would have sounded today in their original form

Keep of Kalessin's first two albums aren't that interesting, though. Reclaim and Armada are their actually good material. I mean, Agnen has a bit of good stuff, but ehhh.

Let's see how this new material goes. Can't be as doofy as Reptilian... At least it's a bit faster.

I disagree entirely. I find their entire discography pretty forgettable though.

[edit] scratch that, I just went back and listened to some of it. The first albums are easily the best. Armada could be a Pantera album, it's terrible.

Out of curiosity, what makes you dislike it so much? I don't see it as being very "black metal" in the traditional sense. Their first two albums were definitely moreso, but I just can't see Armada as being *that* incredibly bad. To each his own, I'm just curious if there's something I missed. That seems like it's always the album people mention when they think of KoK.

Cathedral is releasing their final album here soon. It sounds like it should have a couple decent moments on it, but if this song is an indicator, it'll be all the technique of Forest Of Equilibrium without any of the youthful enthusiasm and adventurous writing.

I'm not going to rag on Keep of Kalessin at all because I also love Armada (though they've gone downhill since then for sure), but I'm just wondering if you're familiar with the band Nidingr. Their latest album Greatest of Deceivers sounds a hell of a lot like it, and even the vocals are similar. This is the only song from that album on Youtube but it's a pretty decent representation.

It's just garbage really. They lost the atmosphere and coldness shown in the first two albums, and presented much more influence from (melodic) death metal, and other melodic black metal. I happen to think the vocals on it are absolutely horrible and the drumming mechanical to the point of boredom.

As for it always being the album people mention - easy reason: most people didn't know who the hell KoK were until they reformed and Frost played on the drums on the Reclaim EP, they got further (unwanted this time) attention a year later when members were arrested and accused of drugging and raping a woman while on tour in Canada. And then they released Armada. Most people hadn't heard the first two, and most people who see the need to talk about Armada probably still haven't.

I don't see any reason for KoK to exist in their current format when there's countless melodic black metal bands who are much better. Nevermind the fact that their reboot would be akin to reforming Mock without Dolk.

Really? Ragnarok, Naglfar, Setherial, Enthroned, Lord Belial (hell, just about any Swedish band playing melodic black), (early) Dark Funeral, Dark Fortress, (early) Septic Flesh, Mork Gryning, Limbonic Art, Kampfar, Helheim... I'd recommend Ancient's first album before Keep of Kalessin to be honest.

(The new) Keep of Kalessin are pretty generic really (and they've always been, I'm not claiming the old stuff is groundbreaking either), it's just melodic black metal with a few keyboards chucked in. If it's the symphonic elements people like mixed in with the speed they'd be far better off listening to early Setherial, Abigor, Obtained Enslavement or (early) Seth.

If it's the technical aspect? Immortal, Enslaved etc etc

I mean, I'd rather listen to Celestial Bloodshed, poo poo, as much as Ghash is trash talking his old bandmates, he is able to beat them at their own game with ease. There's just no atmosphere in KoK's modern stuff, it's very clinical and produced, which is exactly their intent, since they reformed to try and be as big as Dimmu Borgir etc apparently. They're basically a band like Windir with all the defining character removed at this point... speaking of which, add Vreid to the list of bands better than KoK at melodic black metal (and Vreid are not great).

The song Abandoned Churches though, they HAVE to have made the middle of that song with Dismember playing in the background.

This is totally anecdotal but Switzerland doesn't have the best metal crowds. I went to Zurich a few years ago to see the Big Four, and I was really bummed out by how quiet, passive and boring the crowd was. Apparently "that's just what Swiss people are like".

Smaller gigs might be awesome though.

Persefone has always been kind of goofy melodic death metal with overelaborate arrangements and instrumentation and stuff, but I swear for Spiritual Migration they've reached new levels of stuff. There's a lot of random chugging, really bad vocals, extended noodling alternating between heavily-processed guitars and synths, etc.
