Hey everyone: Can someone make a good recommendation for a tote or message bag style carrier (open top) for corgis? I just need something for short subway trips in NY - nothing long distance, it's more of a formality of having her in some kind of contained bag in accordance with NY transit regulations. Would be great if I could also use it for bike rides too though.

Look what the easter rabbit brought us! A tentacle monster in the window Her name is Pepper and she is very smart She is already mostly housebroken - she will let us know when she has to go outside, and do her business right away. We are charging her with the clicker. She's picking up the meaning of the click and 'hands off' already!

Snow last month. After surviving the bladder surgery, she now has a scratched cornea that's taking a long time to heal. I think my Basset might have done it. Lucy the corgi will just sit there and get smacked in the face by the Amorette the basset's tail. Cut my drat hair already.

Tegan and I had an eventful day yesterday. I put her out on her line while I did some dishes. An hour later a woman knocks on my door. I ask her to wait a second so I can leash Tegan, and the woman looks really excited. She opens my door for me and softly mutters "noooo" when Tegan jumps on her. Turns out this woman lost her corgi the previous night, and someone had seen Tegan on her line and thought it was the missing dog. I took one of her flyers and told her I'd be on the lookout. An hour after that, I get another knock on my door. This time it's the girl who had called the lost dog's owner, and she wanted to scope things out for herself. I guess she's lived in my neighborhood for a while but had never seen Tegan before, so she apologized for jumping to conclusions. She was super nice about it, but it was so weird to see this level of vigilance. I guess I should be glad, in case Tegan ever gets loose there are people who would try to track her down. I feel like I need to get a sign or something for my backyard so some lost dog vigilante swoops my dog away for the reward. Little would they know what they're getting into.

She already posted on Craigslist and our city's lost dog Facebook page, and I've been letting friends who live in the area know. I'm going to take Tegan for a walk later with a pocket full of treats and squeaky toys to see if we don't have any luck...

Dropping some recent pics of Panda that my mom took. I usually just upload pics I take with my phone. Still not sure about swimming just yet. She likes the water but I don't think she want's to be submerged. I'm trying to go slowly as to not freak her out and traumatize her. My brother's golden retriever will only get her feet wet and is terrified of being in the water. In other news, during the whole dermatomyositis situation, we put off getting her spayed under the vet's suggestion. She later gave the go ahead after her last check up but we put it off too long. Panda became a woman, many times in small spots on our floors. Luckily not on carpet but we've waited a little over 3 weeks and will make the appointment soon now that she's stopped spotting. I'm concerned about when to get her spayed. My regular vet (not her specialist) said that after she stops bleeding to just go ahead and bring her in while I've read info that says to wait 6 weeks. We feel dumb for waiting too long but now just want to make sure we don't jump the gun.

So has anyone else had their corgi randomly start howling? Nova's barked, growled, whined, yipped, made every sort of other noise, but she's never legitimately howled. We checked on her and she was fine. Nothing unusual was going on. Dear dog: howling like you are on the plains of the arctic and singing with wolf friends is not comforting at 5 AM.

It's the only time I've ever heard him howl. Maybe nova heard an alarm or really high pitched noise that hurt her ears that you guys couldn't hear?

It was so incredibly funny and cute at the same time that I laughed for like a minute straight. He has never done it since. I wonder from time to time what caused it, but never figured it out.

He also howled earlier this week but that was after a vet visit, so his daily routine was really messed up, he saw someone outside and just freaked.

Neigé did the sleep-howl too! My husband was playing a video game that had some kind of alarm or siren going off in the background noise, and Neigé was sleeping on the floor in front of the tv when suddenly she sat bolt upright and let out a long "wooooooooo!" We just stared at her as she blinked sleepily, then she looked around real confused-like and howled again, quieter and less certain sounding. She seemed disconcerted by our laughter, then hmphed back down and went back to sleep while we shrieked with mirth around her.

Ace will occasionally wake up with a howl for no reason but he's always super startled when he does it (at the noise he's making usually, like he can't figure out where it came from.) He barks in his sleep all the time, too. I call it sleep-woofin. The one time I'm aware of him ever howling on purpose was when my boyfriend and I both went out of town for the weekend and he howled the entire time. Usually only one of us will be gone from the house for any extended period of time and he just didn't know how to deal with us both being gone I guess.

I've tried playing a wolf howling on Youtube while both I and my girlfriend howl alongside, and we haven't gotten a peep out of Tegan. My last dog, a standard poodle, never howled until she met my cousin's basset, so maybe that's the key to unlocking Howl Mode.

George howls at the phone because it calls out who is calling in an automated voice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQrcZRGjpxY He'll also do this to the automated voice when my wife calls in for a conference call (she works from home), and is usually still going when she has to say her name.

Zeke howls... a lot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysrRMF3lOi8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdFSqNEHqPo He seems to do it when he's happy, excited, trying to start play with the humans or other dogs. He does a more wolfy low, continuous howl rarely after eating while waiting to be let out of his crate for water. Howling corgis are the best!

My corgi suddenly got very lethargic and seemed in pain. We took him to the emergency clinic last night and they think he might have an inflammatory disease or an infection in his spinal fluids. They showed us how he wasn't blinking on reaction on one side of his face and some other neurological symptoms. He looked really bad last night but he's much better today. They said he needs to get an MRI (which costs $1,500) and that usually this is treated with steroids. Does anyone have any experience with something like this or know someone who does?

I recently adopted a Corgi named Lewis from a shelter. They had no clue why this poor guy got abandonded. Apparently he just waltzed into a bank and animal control was called to take him away. He already was housetrained and knew a couple commands. His only hitch is with other dogs when they are getting attention he thinks he deserves. This is exacerbated around food... He even has done some resource guarding at my fiancee's parent's house. My parents also own a dog so this can make traveling to their houses difficult. I have been working on it by socializing and trying to ease him into the idea that other dogs aren't so bad. It's not the pound or wherever you lived before that and nobody is going to take your food and starve you. Other than that he loves the dog park. When we got him my fiancee bought him a plush bear toy with a squeeker in the body and some stuffing in the head. Within 2 weeks he had disemboweled it on my bedroom floor. He really liked that toy, though. I was wondering if anybody had a recommendation for a Corgi sized plush toy that I could get him to see if maybe he wont destroy this time. Any specific brands do a pretty good job reinforcing their plushy toys? Thanks for reading. Here's a picture of the toy-killer the day I got him... on 3/14. http://i.imgur.com/IH97FwE.jpg?1

You can try Skinneez dog toys, but basically no stuffed animal toy is dog proof, so get used to picking up bits of stuffing off the floor for the rest of your life. For resource guarding, we chat about it a bit in the Dog Training Megathread. Consider picking up the book Mine by Jean Donaldson. It'll walk you through how to deal with resource guarding in a safe and productive way.

Yeah the only thing that lasts through Taziki and Pita are bones. Stuffed toys make it about 5 minutes before their guts are everywhere.

Tegan has destroyed all of her stuffed animals. What I'm having luck with right now is two pieces of fleece sewed together with nothing between them. She still tries to rip the stitching out, but there's very little mess and she loves to carry it around. I also tied one of these to a Nylabone, that's another one of her favorites that she can't destroy.

No stuffed toy survives Corwin, not even the ones that are supposed to be tough. If it has a squeaker in it, he will get it out somehow. Even big toys he'll systematically disembowel. He really loves doing it, though-- I just wish it didn't cost so much.

A lot of dogs have the dissecting drive, and I've found that the best way to provide an inexpensive outlet for that one is a big bag of de-plastic-part-ed goodwill stuffed animals. Toss the dog one of them, have it correspond to house vacuuming day. Saved me hundreds of dollars so far and gone a long way toward taking the edge off for the doggie.

We gave up on getting stuffed toys for Butters because he goes through those so quickly. Luckily we were able to mostly train him out of going for my GF's stuffed animals. Now it's thick ropes, rawhides (which he gets through pretty quickly), and surprisingly those little rod and line-like toys that people use to mess with cats. She bought one for a dollar at some pet store and got several months out of it. Come to think of it, Butters has had one toy survive his nearly three-year lifespan. It's a rope chew toy that's the same size Butters was when we first got him. Now it fits neatly in his mouth, I have a picture of him chewing it as a puppy and need to get a comparison shot of him with it now. Closet Nerd posted:Have you tried bathing her in a tub and using a cup to pour water over her? This might be less scary for her. Yeah, I've bathed her that way in both bath tubs and in sinks when she was potato sized. She protests any time someone other than her gets her wet. She was right as rain the moment she got out to get dried. It's just more convenient to use my condos shower than it is to go to my parents house and use their tub. She's well loved and we don't torment her, I just thought that particular video of her shower protests was pretty cute and funny Just for reference, this is how her mind works as far as I can tell.
