There's a series on Youtube called "You Can Play This" that's all about that. They cover all consoles, but there's a lot of Famicom.

Even though I'm planning to get an Everdrive N8, I have a bunch of eBay Bucks that are burning a hole in my virtual pocket. I never wanted to collect Famicom but the cartridges are so fun looking. What have I gotten myself into?

 :retrogames: :retrogames:

EDIT: Also, since it's semi relevant, does anyone know of an AR Japanese translation app for Android? I know there's one for iOS, but I haven't seen one on my platform yet.

poo poo, I just played a pretty neat Famicom game about a bald kid with a third eye (looks like Krillin from Dragon Ball) goes around punching monsters. You can charge up your powers to create a mobile platform you can hop on. There's an in-game store you can spend spirits to buy power ups like a flame shot. It plays similarly to Demonhead but with linear levels.

It's a Famicom "gem" I've never heard of before and randomly selected it while going through my ROM list.

Dudes, recently my wife liberated a Model 1 Sega Mega Drive from her parents storage (and from the clutches of her brother, haha sucker) awesome right?

Wrong, the bastard wont power on. :gonk:

The symptom is pretty much no power LED flashing on, and no display or function on the TV set. A little bit of googling tells me it could be down to an old/broken power adapter, or a fuse in the console may be dead. Is there anything in particular I should do to fix this?

FIND THE FISH!
My game collection is about as big as I can handle without moving into a place of my own. I really should dump the MicroVision, most of the small (but space-devouring) Genesis collection, the PS1 games and a buttload of PC games (also space devouring, several big box games). Given how much I seem to actually play the Dreamcast that should go too, but it's loving amazing how compact that system and a sizable game library for it is (although extra controllers and a boxed keyboard and arcade stick bloat that out a bit). Plus there's a lot of sentiment in that library, as I managed to find a lot of it for quite a bit cheaper than it was going for (Super Street Fighter II X for :10bux: god drat) and we played a lot of the fighting games for it in college.

Man, the 3DO should probably go too if I'm being honest, and I have a PS1 with a motor problem that I'm not inclined to fix since I have two other systems that play PS1 games.

I do buy most of my games fully intending to play them, I swear!

It'll eventually come back in your favor brother. I've had that same thing happen plenty of times, but have also had plenty of times where an ebay auction with a stock photo arrives and is beyond prestine when you expected it to be a beat up mangled piece of poo poo. I've got a great example of this and Virtual Boy games I'll post tonight if I remember.

Worth noting tho that machine translation tends to gently caress up much more than usual when given kana-only lines to translate.

When awful machine translation is the only option write it in both languages if you can. Same body of text twice. With a little English comprehension the reader might be able to piece the meaning together.

Seriously, Nightmare of Druaga is kind of a puzzle orientated game in the Mystery Dungeon series which is interesting. The Return of Ishtar, on the other hand, is completely forgettable and it's only available in English on one of the more expensive Namco arcade collections.

Genesis model 1's can do S-Video with some light modding (And I, or other goons in this thread would be capable of doing said mod).

NES's look fine on a CRT over composite. RGB modding is far too crazy and limited for sane or semi-sane people to do.

I'm running into a bit of trouble getting my PS1 imports to play on my US system. I thought I had read previously that by using a Gameshark or Action Replay to pause a NTSC-U disc while the tray was open (usually by selecting it to read music tracks), you could then swap out the disc and put in your JP or whatever one, then start the game up by exiting the cheat device's menu.

I'm using a Gameshark Pro 3.0 on a model # SCPH-5501, manufactured August 1997, if any of that makes a difference.

Quoting this since it got stuck at the end of the previous page. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or if there's some other component I'm missing. I just want to play imports without resorting to getting a JP PS1 or modchip. :(

Transfer Paks are not region-locked.
Since I had everything lying around from the last test, I confirmed that it doesn't matter which region the Transfer Pak's from. Just the N64 cart and GB cart's regions have to jive.

A lot of games (Especially later ones) will need codes to start up. Some just won't.

Best way to play PS1 imports is a modded PS1/2 or a JP PS1/2.

Are you holding the disc-lid-closed button through the whole process? Usually people cram a ball of aluminum foil in there or take a spring out of a pen and put one end on the spike the presses the button down. The spring thing worked for me with a "swap disc" and no mod.

VV I think so but the specific gameshark is important and I didn't even know some games needed codes.

Yeah, I am. All the games I imported though refuse to go from the Gameshark screen to their own once I exit out the GS.

Can you use any US PS1 game as the game you swap out for the import?

I finally managed to mod my 60-to-72-pin connector to passthrough the audio. Holy gently caress am I bad at soldering, though, like I think most 6 year-olds with decent color-in-the-lines skills could do better than I could. The Everdrive definitely needs work for the expanded sound, some of it sounds really weird and it's definitely the main thing the Powerpak still does better (also selective Famicom Disk System side changes). Also, I don't think Gimmick! is working with it (the game plays but the sound is hosed), which is interesting since the Powerpak works. Also note that there's some bad info online, you need to tap pin 45 (forty-five) on the Famicom side of the adapter for sound.

I'm going to try and do the audio passthrough cable mod to circumvent internal modding required. Hopefully I'll have that done tomorrow. I also need to find a way to cut a notch out of the NES cartridge shell so I can get at the microSD slot and USB port; if I get that working I'll pretty much have the perfect NES flash cart for my liking.

Not too shabby. For the curious, krikzz himself says it's identical to the Famicom 60-pin version, the only difference is it being 72-pin. It will run the exact same firmware and have identical (in)compatibility. He also says the cost will be either the same or slightly higher than the Famicom-size one.

I downloaded the inserts off thecoverproject.com and printed them myself using a photo printer and photo paper. Alternatively, if you don't have a good printer, you may be able to get the covers printed at Staples, but I'm not sure what kind of paper they'd use.

The cases, I bought them here: http://www.genesysdtp.com/index.htm?nintendodscasedetails.htm

One caveat with those cases though, you have to cut a little plastic on the top portion of the gba slot. You just have to cut it down so it's mostly flush with the rest of the case. A decent pair of diagonal cutters can do each case in 1 minute or less.

They're called flash carts because you store the games on flash memory (in older ones they were custom modules, in current ones it's CompactFlash or SD, whcih are still flash memory).

Okay, yeah, from that perspective they're all still proper flash carts. Still, it's worth distinguishing what carts actually run ROMs from, and krikzz himself calls the N8 a RAM cart.
