I make a habit of attending as many performances of local bands as possible. The best part is being able to meet them and talk about their music or any music for that matter. To be able to get varying perspectives on style, equipment, and technique has been very helpful and inspiring. Maybe someday I'll see someone on TV and be able to say "I saw that guy play in a little dive bar back in 2010". How many of you make an effort to do this like me? Other than seeing bands you are acquainted with I mean. Bands that you don't know or haven't heard before. I took guitar lessons from a guy here in Omaha a few years ago. He's been in a few different groups/bands locally. They are currently working on an album via a kickstarter project. You can hear a few of the new singles at the project page. You can also search for Matt Whipkey on Spotify and various other sources. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1258327212/penny-park-omaha-ne-summer-1989/posts or this link http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1258327212/penny-park-omaha-ne-summer-1989 Matt Whipkey is the guy I think tops my favotire list right now. His music is not at all like what I typically listen to. But he has a very blues kind of feel. it's almost a rock, blues, with a country twist. Hard to describe. He's my favorite because he only really does original stuff. no covers that I have ever heard. Check it out and let me know what you think. I talk to him occasionally via Facebook and I would be happy to pass along any of your comments or questions. (FYI - I have his permission to post this) SO share your favorite local band with us and tell us why they kick rear end. simreal fucked around with this message at 22:09 on Apr 4, 2013 |

I used to live in Indianapolis and the Mudkids are totally "right sized" for that city. They are a fantastic, fun live performance and they tour just enough so that they are available when you are in the mood, randomly present enough on the scene that you know them and like them but not so much that you get sick of them, and just rare enough that you can convince a pretty girl that you are "in the know" and "know a super cool local band". They are "right sized" for Indy -- they aren't going anywhere beyond that in a substantial fashion. That said, if any goons are in Indy I'd recommend checking them out. Right now I live in NYC and Orange County. I don't even know where to start with the NYC music scene but live music is always a party. What I love about New York is that it does a great job forcing people to spend time with the man in the mirror and not to coast. Performers who shouldn't be performers burn out quickly enough and I'm not hip enough that any live music venue is going to pretty good. I just don't do a lot of live music because music isn't a big bonding thing with my NYC friends: meaning we don't like the same stuff. But at least there is music everywhere in NYC. You can find some small time band doing something fun. I have NO idea where to start in Orange County. Any suggestions?

My favorite Nashville band is the Ettes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHbrKjK_hKY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RPjO46WX3A Technically they're transplants from LA, two of whom were previously living in New York, but they've lived here for the making of more than half their albums at this point so I'm counting them.

My favorite band from Seattle right now is Success: Here is a terrible quality video of them performing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dph32VEdfyw A fun pop-punk band that's been around for a while now. They just released a new album: http://laescalerarecords.bandcamp.com/album/we-are-the-elitist-generation Their live shows are a treat, I've seen them a ton of times. They're also rather friendly.

Most of my local bands tend to be metal/hardcore related which isn't usually my scene at all, I'm more into my electronic stuff HOWEVERRRRRRRRRRRRR a band that a couple of my friends are in is actually awesome...quote:Ashes of Maybelle are a Coventry based band taking influence from the post hardcore, deathcore, metal and tech scenes to create something visceral, noisy and aggressive. They are definitely visceral, noisy and aggressive! Like in a lot of smaller live venues though the sound is never that good which takes away a lot from how good they are. Live is full on 'wall of sound' type poo poo but their EP is just fantastically well mastered and shows of just how good the various members are together. They get drat good reviews in the local scene too. http://ashesofmaybelle.bandcamp.com/

Bit of a mixture from Newcastle in the UK, but there's some real talent around here. I really enjoy going along to open mic nights in Newcastle, some of them are pretty poor but in general there's at least a few people who have the balls to get on the stage and blast out some really nice stuff. There's some great electronic music nights around Newcastle too, including some that have lesser well known or local artists playing a set. The house music scene in Newcastle in particular is pretty great for this. Death to Indie are a pretty great pop-punk outfit that have been knocking about for a few years, they sound a lot better live than they do on their recorded stuff, which I always consider a pretty good thing, in particular for bands like this. I say it#s pop-punk rather than one or the other because as much as they want to be punk their stuff is far too 'radio friendly' for that, and some of their songs are a tad on the repetitive side. You can check them out here though - http://deathtoindie.bandcamp.com/ and for a music video, you can go here - http://youtu.be/3FR4HtH6bHY Going in a more country, and in particular folk direction is a solo artist named JD O'neill, who I've worked with before in producing a music video and is a genuinely great guy. The vast majority of his writing is all based on things that have happened to him, in particular with relationships, but there's a lot of material he wrote about his father dying and him losing faith in religion, that kind of thing. He sounds as good live as he does in recording, and there are videos of his live performances dotted about Youtube if you care to look for them, although I think most are filmed on phones and the like. You can check some of his stuff out here - https://soundcloud.com/jdoneill and for a music video from the single from his EP, "Deconstructing a Heart", here - http://youtu.be/8YmXuqljmek And for some electronic stuff, Joonipah is one of the most amazing House producers I've ever heard and he's exploding quite heavily in general now. There's not a lot I can really say about him beyond "if you enjoy House music at all listen to his stuff." You can check him out right here - https://soundcloud.com/joonipah

Kid Smpl is a really talented ambient artist from Seattle, I've been to one of his shows. I normally cringe when I hear "night bus" used as a genre description but his albums really do sound like sort of slowed-down Burial material. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMwm2RZX3qg Seattle is a real drat good city for metal in my opinion. Wolves in the Throne Room, the Melvins, Sunn O))), all local artists. I recently read about Matmos in The Stranger and I'd like to see them sometime.

Seems there's a lot of Seattle bands here already, why not one more? Thee Emergency is one of my favorite bands lately. they're sort of a Grunge/Motown deal with a certain quality I can't describe but reminds me of ABBA for some reason. They have three albums, Can You Dig It?, Solid, and Cracka Slang. Solid is one of my favorite albums. I haven't head Cracka Slang yet, but it's apparently more psychedelic/country then the previous two. Here's the sad part though, there's almost nothing of them on the internet. The best I can do is this free MP3 of Attack of the Cobrasaurus from KEXP's website.

I used to go see local/regional bands a lot, but the music 'scene' and my social life have changed a lot over the past two years. Currently, the best local band (Columbus, GA) I can think of is SoL. They are always a good time live. http://www.reverbnation.com/solhomepage My current favorite band is Nothing More from San Antonio, TX...but I saw them in Columbus a couple of years ago at a local benefit concert. They blew my mind then, and have only gotten better since. They did just get off of their first national tour opening for Adrenaline Mob two days ago, but at this time I'd still consider them a 'local' band...even if not local to me. Their live show is not to be missed, and I found one of my favorite parts of seeing them on this tour was watching the crowd's reaction to them. http://www.reverbnation.com/nothingmoremusic Their first music video... http://youtu.be/SyAgOj7lLd0

Fayetteville, Arkansas's Perpetual Werewolf is legitimately one of the best bands in the world. Unfortunately, the videos of them on youtube are all poor quality, and they have a couple demos but they don't represent the intensity of their sound. So don't judge them based on this stuff though. Fortunately they are recording a full length right now. They play psychedelic hardcore. The closest comparison I could make is probably the screamo band Gospel, but with more hosed up guitar stuff. Here's a crappy video of their most recent show. My head pops into frame a couple times! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r6AuZI2lQZo

Brisbane, Australia. Probably the music capital as far as great bands go locally in Australia right now. DZ Deathrays - two piece, DFA79 inspired punk rock with a dancey edge. Going far, deservedly so. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRknTGykEGA Tiny Spiders - another two piece, a bit more garagey and DIY. Retains a nice pop edge to the rocky side. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRY2_zs5QLA No Anchor - sludge-drone metal that just sits right. Had the distinction of being the only Australian band to be on the Forbes best free album list, twice. Their poo poo's on Spotify. I urge you to listen and buy their stuff, because it's incredible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjd569Ik6do Kitchen's Floor - downer pop of the first degree. This is super polarizing; it's something you'll either click with right away (like myself) or hate it and not want to listen to it. Give it a go. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1hBHP5qr6A

These folks from Philly just dropped this album and it's mighty fine. It's some very weezery rock and roll, but very high energy. There are a few wonderfully calm and melancholy songs on there too. There's a little bit of everything on here, soaring guitar solos, parts you can scream along to, soulful acoustic closers, jazz breaks to heavy hitting rock songs, it's really a quality piece of work. I recommend Cockroach and Mike's Song to get a good idea of what they sound like. Young Pilgrims, ladies and gentlemen, with their album Kyoko and a Rocket to the Moon. http://youngpilgrimsrock.bandcamp.com/album/kyoko-and-a-rocket-to-the-moon Also from Philadelphia, another group of young upstarts called Q Family Band. They're like if the Arcade Fire were all teenagers, but folkier (save for the one very electronic oriented song on the EP). They're quite good, and they recently put their first full length EP online for all to enjoy. I very much enjoy the tracks Daisies and The Waltz. http://qfamilyband.bandcamp.com/

There's a lot of great local stuff in Orlando (and the Florida area in general) right now. Flashlights, in particular. I'm good friends with a lot of the band, but that shouldn't really color my perception of them. They play really great pop-punk. Great people making great music. They recently got signed to Hard Rock's record label and featured on SPIN, which is loving crazy. Some other Orlando/Florida area highlights: -Holly Hunt: Miami sludge metal. They blew me away when I saw them with Earth a few months back. -Wet Nurse: Orlando pop-punk. -Hauzarest: Vicious Orlando hardcore. Think Rohnert Park-era Ceremony. Sadly defunct. -Bastard Deceiver: Tampa crust/grindcore. I think they're defunct, but Sacridose features members of that band.

One of my absolute favourite local Melbourne, Australia bands are The Bombay Royale, they're a 10 piece band who play a mix somewhere between 70s Bollywood funk and Surf Rock. They sing almost exclusively in Hindi and are just world class musicians. They dress up as characters as if from a cheesy 70s Bollywood film and basically are insane amounts of fun to see live. Although they got themselves over to England recently for Glastonbury which was so weird seeing clips of since I'm used to tiny packed sweaty rooms in Melbourne inner city suburban bars. Really think they deserve big things - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TXFC7YArcLw Graveyard Train play a style they called Horror Country, fantastic vocal harmonies mixing blues, country, rock and a horror theme. Can't go wrong when one of the instruments is a guy hitting a chain with a hammer - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pj6Q0xRW5bQ Another awesome local act is Jimi Hocking, guy is just an insanely talented guitarist. Won the Bluesman of the year award in 2005 over in Memphis. Does all those amazing gimmicks like playing the guitar behind his head while doing the splits and such. He's often playing little free gigs all over the city each couple of weekends and local pubs. Here's a clip of him playing the Mandolin just for something different - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcPz5CsTc1E And just thought for nostalgia's sake, one of my favourite all time Melbourne bands who were more prominant in the 80s and 90s and have now since broken up (although one of the singers still carries on another great band now) was TISM who were some of the greatest trolls in music history to me - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-mLIdLZZeI thepokey fucked around with this message at 15:53 on Aug 21, 2013 |

Seattle/Washington Heatwarmer Honestly, one of my favorite bands right now. Prog-rock, but also twee (as much as I dislike that term). Some of the best local musicians, and they are incredible live. Incredible voice, and great songwriting. http://everendingkicks.bandcamp.com/album/notion-free http://www.daytrotter.com/#!/concert/ever-ending-kicks/20056588-37383722 Edit: Vancouver, B.C. (close enough) Here's another good band from B.C. I like quite a bit. Thee AHs http://theeahs.bandcamp.com/ Garage-y lounge rock with beautiful melodies. She is an incredible singer, and just as good live. A good contrast with bubbly pop music, and kinda dark lyrics about love.
