I popped open one of my 2 KBS that I was able to acquire. I now know why this beer was so hyped. It's just a perfect beer. Much smoother than BCBS without the aggressive bourbon bite at the end. Don't get me wrong, I loved BCBS, but this is quite a bit mellower and just absolutely delicious.

Hey everybody, I'm back again with another weird question, but this one is a little different. On the suggestion of the thread I got untappd for my phone, and it gave me an option to connect with facebook. I chose to do this because I like not filling out the same fields every time I make an account. After I gave it permission, I entered a little data and then was taken to my brand new untappd profile page. When I got there, I already had a profile picture. The thing is, the profile picture was from my Steam account. You know, the pc gaming service. At no point did I ever tell untappd to connect to Steam (it wasn't even an option, and I can't fathom why it would be). Not only that, but I did this all from my phone. Steam is on my pc. Did they datamine me? What the heck happened? My Steam and Facebook accounts are not connected, and this gives me some big concerns. Anyone who knows anything would be a help, because this is surreal.

Untappd uses foursquare for location data as well, so it's possible there's a foursquare-facebook link going on.

Ok. I started putting together a document for newbies. It was written from the perspective of someone living in Southeast PA. All of the beer I mention are easily obtainable here. So don't give me poo poo for not including your favorite pet beer. However, please do give me poo poo if I included something awful. I didn't finish the stout or porter sections because I'm a horrible judge of those categories. I like that whole malty, earthy, chocolate, coffee flavor profile and it is very rare that I have a stout or porter that I don't enjoy. So if someone wants to write up something I'll include it. In any case, I hope someone somewhere finds this useful. If nothing else it was a neat exercise for myself. This is the current list: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1zubmHYFrnDYcLnjgzzhvVkSUBwP6M47eoHvrwwJPPUk/edit?usp=sharing

I went to my local Whole Foods last night and stumbled on a single bottle of Firestone 16 sitting on their shelf. I grabbed it. The wine/beer guy came out while I was browsing and said, "Oh, you're the lucky one!" Apparently someone who worked there set the bottle aside in back for himself, but never paid for it. Then he quit. So they put the bottle out to sell and I was the first person to come along and recognize what they had. I missed the initial 16 release, so it's nice to finally get a bottle. Then one of my friends went to his neighborhood grocery store and found local brewery Joseph James's barrel aged RIS ($20/btl) being sold for the price of their regular Red Fox Stout ($5/btl). He bought all of them and shared a few with me. Suddenly my barrel-aged collection is overwhelming its shelves for not a lot of money. My weekly bottle share was interesting once again. Of particular note: - Local brewery Big Dogs aged their Sled Dog Stout in Makers Mark barrels and served it on nitro. It was pretty drat tasty, but I would have preferred carbonation to nitro. Still, it's hard to bitch about an inch-thick creamy head. - Cervecería Cucapá Runaway IPA: The bottle from this Baja California craft brewery is endearingly racist, featuring the "illegal immigrant crossing" signs that can be seen around SoCal. The IPA itself wasn't fresh, but even old it tasted like it had been competently put together. I've heard great things about Cucapá's stout and will continue to look for a bottle to try out. I've got Lookout Blonde (the label features one guy boosting another over a fence) on deck for another share to see how it is. - Iron Fist Rubus Vigoratus: Iron Fist's beers made a lot more sense to me once I talked to the brewers and found out they were concentrating on Belgian styles. This is a BA stout brewed with raspberries and cardamom, and just like Belgian beers the spices comes through very well. It's not like any other stout I've had, but I liked it. Next time I'm around Holiday Wine Cellar I'll be getting another. - Stone Espresso IRS: Yes. Yes, yes, yes. This is a great, hyper-aggressive coffee beer and I love it. - Knee Deep Simtra Triple IPA: Probably the best-balanced triple IPA I've had. The mouthfeel was surprisingly light, with just enough malt sweetness (quite a lot) to balance out the fuckton of hops. My only complaint here is the bitterness on the finish continues to ramp up for a good two minutes. Pair this with food so you have something to cut that off and it should be very enjoyable. - 4 Hands Smoked Pigasus - It's got a pig on the label, a triple-pun in the name, and is a drat fine smoked beer. What's not to love? Far less aggressively smoky than most smoked beers on the market, this has a finer balance. It would make a good first rauchbier, but it's also a drat good example of the style for people more familiar with it.

I hit the "Bank error in your favor" card today. Got a call from my beer store asking if I was going to pick up my KBS that they were holding for me. I had already picked it up, but the new guy didn't mark me off. The manager just said, "Well, I won't tell if you won't. Come on in and get it whenever. It's got your name on it." Glad to actually get a whole 4 pack of this stuff!

After the first wave of hype, Brux sat on shelves, especially once the mediocre reviews started flowing in of the beer as it was fresh. I'm still sitting on one; I may open it in a year or two. I'm on the fence about whether triple IPA could be its own style. Nothing is jumping out at me as having a great tap list. There's a couple places that will have a decent beer or two, but they'll probably be bottled and overpriced. Sounds like the Cafe at Ray's is just the top deck: http://www.rays.com/cafe/ Might be worth a shot. They claim 20 beers on tap.

I remember when we got Brux in late July at my store. It was so-so. Definitely felt too young. After 3 months, there was a noticeable change. If you've still got bottles now, drink up. I think it has matured into a nice beer.

If you'd like another, or more, let me know and we can set up a trade. There's a bunch hanging around in New Jersey. I can still find Sucaba for that matter. On the talk of Brux, I would buy a bottle in an instant. I liked it fresh, loved it 6 months later. On the talk of Triple IPAs, I think it's a legitimate style. I'd put it at 11%+ ABV though, based on the others out there that fall into the category. Then again I think any brewery that releases a stronger more hopped beer than their IIPA could also call it a triple IPA. Either way I think it's unfair to place 120 Minute and Devil Dancer in the same conversation as Pliny the Younger or even Maharaja. Also I just got a job at one of New Jersey's best liquor stores! IIPA/DIPA aren't traitional in any way either, so all triple IPA needs is time before it's equally valid. Personally, anything >10% is some sort of barleywine (Hoppy/American/Malty/english/Old Ale maybe).funkybottoms posted:the blueberry flavor is strong and not overly sweet, while the beer itself is really roasty with some dark/bitter chocolate flavors. i haven't had many fruited stouts that i've enjoyed, but Tres is pretty good. Maybe Exponential Hoppiness too? 120 Minute probably deserves to be in a category all it's own (thank God). As for whether or not Triple IPAs are actually a style, when many "regular" DIPAs push 10+% ABV and are already as saturated with hops as they can be, is there really a need for an official distinction? Seems useful as a marketing distinction, but not much else.

I don't think PtY has anything in common with Devil Dancer or 120 from a taste profile. Those two are in worlds of their own, well beyond what even Simtra is. Like ChickenArise pointed out, I put those closer to barleywines than anything I'd call a "pale ale." Which goes back to my point that "Triple IPA" isn't really a separate style but in fact just marketing code for "overhopped barleywine" that they can sell to people who call themselves "hopheads" with no sense of irony.

I honestly think its a better argument whether Double IPA and Single IPA are differentiated enough in style to merit a separate BJCP category. The difference between say, Pliny the Elder and BP Sculpin aren't really so high.

I'm not sure if PtY was the first 'Triple' IPA but RR states that they called it that because it was brewed with triple the amount of hops in their IPA. Really everything bigger than an IPA should just be classified as an Imperial IPA

IPAs are usually fairly dry and DIPAs usually aren't. And they have higher alcohol. Pretty much sums up my thoughts on it.
