American barleywines(?), the sweeter/smoother ones (think Firestone Walker rather than SN Bigfoot). Though she also liked Oak Smoked OG so I dunno!

So did she go straight to IPAs? What did she start with? What did you start with? It's always interesting to see how people's taste in beer evolves - makes it easier to recommend new beers to others who are headed down the same path.Podima posted:American barleywines(?), the sweeter/smoother ones (think Firestone Walker rather than SN Bigfoot). American BWs tend to be very hop-forward; Lots of bitterness and an emphasis on US hop varieties and flavors/aromas. English BWs are "rounder", smoother, with better balance between the sweetness and the (typically earthy, noble) hops. Has she had the regular OG? Wondering if the smoke tones down the hops for her? SUPER HASSLER posted:Let me say that living in OR, I miss a couple of things. One is lots of really good basic stout. I'm not talking about KBS, but things like Left Hand as discussed above. My faves here are probably Oakshire Espresso Stout and a vanilla porter done by a place down south, Klamath Basin Brewing Co., that has a really embarrassing homepage so I'm not linking it here. The second, and more dire, is the near total lack of good hefes. I maybe wrong but here in Bend I'm in a situation where the best one is the Trader Joe's one. Luckily, it's quite good (really fruity tho). Obviously it's a different sub-style but I like Deschutes' Obsidian Stout a lot as a "good basic stout".

VVV i'm both in bottle shops more frequently and better at keeping track of what she likes (plus i'm a nice guy), so i buy beer for her. if she wants wine or something like PBR, she'll just get it while grocery shopping. funkybottoms fucked around with this message at 17:57 on Apr 12, 2013 |

Doh, my beer cred! You're right, it's the English barleywines she likes for the attributes you've outlined. We tried regular OG alongside the smoked version and she very much preferred the smoked version. So that's probably what's going on!

The last thing she came home with was a 6 pack of Left Hand Milk Stout Nitro and a 6 pack of Southern Tier's HopSun. She's doing alright.

Just got back from my local liquor store and apparently NJ now gets Great Lakes Brewing Company - snagged a 12-pack that has Dortmunder Gold, Eliot Ness, Burning River, and Edmund Fitzgerald. Rad! There was also something new from Southern Tier - Live, a bottle conditioned pale ale in 6 packs. Anyone had this before?

Other than that, expect lots of beer, lots of waiting, lots of metal, and a fun party.

Maybe Podima will get a distributor that doesn't suck then. Kramer Beverage is notorious for bringing out of code Brooklyn and Great Lakes to stores. Speaking of Farmer's Cabinet, I would avoid that place like the plague. My buddy just left there and aside from them storing kegs in 80+ weather in the summer, they don't clean their taplines. The last time they were cleaned was in January. They also don't clean that taps themselves. I actually haven't been there since Phoebe Esmon left early last year. She's an amazing mixologist and I figured something had to be up if both her and her fiance left a situation where they basically had the run of the bar. And shortly thereafter was when you started hearing all the rumors about that place. Then everyone of note started jumping ship. Frankly I'm amazed they are still open. Also yuck. Now I'm really glad I haven't been there in a while. edit - A quick anecdote about Farmer's Cabinet: I went in there after work one day and ordered one of the house cocktails and said something along the lines of "this is good but it would be better with gin instead of vodka" to the bartender. She replied "that's what I said" and kinda looked mad... I didn't realize that the bartender was Phoebe until the news of her leaving started circulating around. So maybe she didn't have as much control over what was going on in the bar. It gave me the impression that the owners had no idea what they were doing and they were putting their hands in everything. deedee megadoodoo fucked around with this message at 19:43 on Apr 12, 2013 |

And it's a standard pattern for the owner, to such an extent that I'm amazed anyone still loans him any money. My friend who's now at Mica worked for him at Fork & Barrel out in East Falls, he was stiffing her, she was about to leave until he promised her a management position at this new place that was opening in Philly, she said okay, and then when I went to FC about a week after it opened she'd already walked the gently caress out because he was already stiffing her again.
