I'm most excited about the fact that they're making it more profitable to keep your armies consolidated, considering that's what I always did anyway. I know it's bad strategy and I take unnecessary attrition loss and it takes way longer to siege everything, but I'm always so paranoid that I'm going to split my army up and suddenly a bunch of rampaging hordes are going to charge out of nowhere and demolish them all before I can regroup them :ohdear: It'll be nice to have my way of playing being the rewarding one and not the idiot way.

I'm interested to see what the new naval combat will be like, too. I usually never even really bothered with a navy since I never really enjoyed the naval aspect and generally focus on my land-based neighbors (even my US games just turn into beating up Mexico forever instead of going overseas). I'd only ever build up a navy if I had a specific need for one. Hopefully the combat tweaks will make it fun instead of just something I have to do sometimes.

I don't know if I can really blame Paradox, though, even in Total War I never bothered with navies until Empire made them fully playable. I guess I just don't have me sea legs. v:shobon:v

Shotgun occupation is annoying micromanagement anyways. Trying to split poo poo up everywhere while also moving actual combat stacks around to counter incursions is annoying at best. Having less more coherent armies instead of slavering and scattered infantry/guard hordes will be great. This expansion really does look like it will bring a lot to the game.

That's pretty much how I feel about navies as well, they're just a huge bother and in Victoria 2 I often completely ignore researching that poo poo at all. The changes to land warfare look pretty good though, and I suppose the naval changes might get me to give them another go. It would sometimes come in handy actually being able to attack your enemy on his home turf, and I guess the new changes to military access might make navies more vital.

Is removing the "manifest destiny" decision as easy as deleting the decision/event from the game's files? I'd love to play as Deseret or Texas in my first HoD game, but Manifest Destiny makes the game so terrible if you are trying to play as a minor nation in the lower 48

Navies are great. They generate prestige just by existing and are a great place to sink your mountain of surplus cash.

I forgot to post this earlier, but here's a change you can make to the potential of the decision to make it so it can't be used if you're playing Mexico, Texas, California, Deseret, or Columbia:

code:
MEX = {
    ai = yes
}
CAL = {
    ai = yes
}
TEX = {
    ai = yes
}
DES = {
    ai = yes
}
CUL = {
    ai = yes
}
That should require all those nations being played by the AI in order for Manifest Destiny to be triggered. I prefer this solution to removing it because removing it will make the USA never expand like it did historically, while this just stops them if it means giving free cores against the player.

E:
The decision should be in /events/ACW.txt, so if you're playing with a mod, either mod their ACW file, copy the ACW file from vanilla into the mod's event folder and mod that, or make a simple mod that changes the decision.

Well it depends on what your goal is. Like I said, an ai=no clause would mean that AI USA would NEVER reach its historical borders. I understand the frustration when playing as Mexico having the USA get free cores on half my poo poo, but when I'm playing as Zulu, I don't much care what it is the USA is up to so there's no real point in making it so they can't reach historical borders. It would totally work fine, I just prefer limiting the change so that the AI will not use the decision only when it would make it impossible for me to play, but otherwise let the USA do whatever.

Ideally, there should be a 'Manifest Failure' event, where if the US loses a war against a nation they got Manifest Destiny cores on then they lose those cores. Y'know, if you win the war as Mexico then the idea of Manifest Destiny dies stillborn, instead of the US just waiting five years and launching another total war.

Just like they should lose the cores on the CSA if the CSA wins.

Did I just say that out loud~~?!!!
I was thinking of altering the Manifest Destiny decision so that any North American nation could use it if they had all the prerequisites. So, in "Divided States of America", every nation could conceivably get cores on every other nation on the continent. You could get cases where the Mormons, or Quebec conquer the continent. :getin:

... but it seemed like a lot of work and I wasn't sure if it'd really mess things up.

Holy poo poo, I love you.

I just spent... uh, the entire afternoon/evening/night playing an APD game as Argentina -> La Plata. Honestly I only meant to spend a couple hours in it, playing as a Latin American republic that I had never played as before. I was ready to turn it off and go do other stuff when I suddenly democratized and thousands of migrants started pouring in. I stuck with it, got Great Power, formed La Plata, and took all my new cores from Brazil/Uruguay/a blobbed Chile that took out Bolivia early. I spent a couple decades industrializing quietly and slowly in my little unassuming corner of the world as a lesser Great Power, watched the US Civil War go the other way (Free States of America got their asses kicked despite being allied with the UK).

poo poo got really tense and I had an extremely fun war (my first big one, really) in the 1880s. Me and my sphere (all of Spanish-speaking America minus Mexico) along with the United States in a defensive war against Brazil and France. It was nailbiting there for awhile and the alliances were pretty much dead even on paper, but in the end I routed a massive Brazilian army in Sao Paolo and it was just downhill to a white peace from there. I've never felt so accomplished in a war without wargoals before. :banjo:

La Plata is probably my new favorite country to play as. It's challenging relying on Argentina's lovely RGO's (pretty much entirely agricultural and no coal/iron/good raw resources) until you can start to expand or industrialize heavily.

A few of the new countries also have no set ruling party in either start, it's just a blank field with the tooltip reading 'noIdeology'. Oh, and some of the parties are oddly named, like 'Democratic' instead of 'Democratic Party'. Oh, and the Dakota Republic is a Communist-led Dictatorship of the Proletariat in the 1861 start, which is about ten years earlier than communism normally appears as a playable ideology in my experience - although if it's deliberate it's pretty cool, I like the idea of a Sioux communist federation.

Divided States of America will be pretty awesome when you're done with it, keep up the good work! Do you plan on adding any country-specific decisions or events for the new nations? Maybe 'reclaim our ancestral homelands!' decisions for some of the Native American nations that gives cores on some United States territory, or a 'Native American Pan-Nationalism!' event/decision that can lead to the creation of a huge, continent-spanning Native nation with all the tribes as accepted cultures. Also plenty of Mormon flavor events and decisions for Deseret - I'm an ex-Mormon, so I can see all kinds of potential fun there. Maybe an event chain that gives them cores on the site of the Garden of Eden and Christ's Second Coming (Missouri, according to Mormon theology; specifically a plot of land in Independence). Some Mormon Communist/Socialist-specific events could even be done - really early Mormons held all property in common and operated as a commune, so if the evolution of the religion and culture took a slightly different path I can totally see a Mormon Communist movement developing that heavily mixes religion and revolutionary politics.

e: If you do decide to do country-specific events and decisions I'd be more than happy to help with Deseret. I'm a huge nerd about early church history - funnily enough it's actually why I left the church in the first place, the more I learned the less convincing it all was.

This is entirely intentional, but also somewhat broken. I intended there to be two Dakotas, a Democratic People's Republic of Dakota in North Dakota, and a Republic of Dakota in South Dakota. But somehow, I can't seem to figure out how to make a nation that starts off divided split into two at a later date.

The Rocky Mountain Republic and Pawnee are the two I noticed - the party line is completely blank with a white circle where the ideology icon usually goes, and the tooltip says 'noIdeology' with 'noIssue' next to all of the party issues. The California Republic and New England do have ruling parties but they're weirdly named - 'Liberty' and 'Democratic' respectively, instead of 'Liberty Party' and 'Democratic Party'.

Having two Dakota/Sioux nations, a Republic and a Communist state, is a really cool idea, but why create a third Sioux state in South Dakota when you already have the Sioux Nation literally right there? Just have them fill the role that your planned South Dakota nation would have filled. e: With both nations having some sort of 'unite our people!' decision that gives them cores on the other if certain conditions are met, perhaps?

I don't think it particularly matters where a good is produced so long as it's available, does it? Victoria 2 doesn't seem to factor transportation costs into its factory equations, it's all a matter of whether the goods are in your market or not.

Unless you're saying that you can't work out which natural resources you're producing the most of, in which case I think the trade screen could help? At least you'll work out what you're exporting and what you therefore have a surplus of.

farming/mining goods production is easiest seen from the RGO mapmode. There is a production tab showing you overall production per type of goods if you want to see what artisans are producing, but I dont think it specifies what states there (perhaps top one is listed? cant remember). You can click on the goods icons in the production view as well to see a detail window with graph and info about who is producing and how much. If you want more information you have to fall back to the population screen and sort by artisan size etc
