I've finally come to grips with the fact that the sky fucking fell.
I really like this series by Sean Schmidt. I can't really explain why, but it's something about the stillness and 'ordinaryness' of them.

I'm thinking some of that "stillness" you refer to comes from the square aspect ratio combined with placing the subject right in the center (either horizontally or vertically or both) of the frame. Not applicable to all the shots, but true of some.

I agree with that, but I also feel like there's a nice quietness about them. Like, when I look at those photos, I imagine every scene as just silent - even though I know they're not... it's just the impression the photos give.

Charlie Haughey (Chieu Hoi to his friends in the Army 25th Infantry Division), a now-retired cabinet maker, was drafted to the US Army in 1967. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam from March 1968 to May 1969 with the 25th. Charlie, a photographer from a young age, was commissioned by his commanding officer to take photos—not traditional combat photos, but morale-boosting content to uplift the spirits of the members of the unit. When he left Vietnam for good, Charlie brought back to the United States almost two thousand negatives that had captured his unique view on the war and life in the army. The negatives lay in boxes until the fall of 2012, when a chance meeting brought them out of dormancy.

I remember one photograph I saw of a young woman dancing over a burst fire hydrant, at night, and the story the photographer had written about her. She had aids, I think, and she died soon after that photo was taken. It's been bugging me for ages because I can't for the life of me remember where I saw that photograph, what blog, what site, the photographer's name, nothing. Seeing the image and then reading the story was just painful. It was in black and white, from the early 90s, I imagine. Anyway, all I can say is, even if the names didn't stick with me, the image and the story did.

Those are so awesome. How the hell do you get colors like that? I feel like I can never get that kind of look. I've seen other photographers do similar things...

edit, am I going to have to invest in medium or large format film? Because I can't afford that :(

If not, it's something close. These are harsher light, but very similar quality;

Yup, there was an article about him floating around after that set was a runner up in the WPP last year. His main setup is a Mam 7 + 80mm (but also a Linhof Technika).

That series is more Breugel than Breugel himself.
Another stroke of genius, it seems like there's a very subtle transition. It's especially clear in the thumbs. You first have the huge apartment blocks but it begins to transform into pure nature.
