It's terrible and I'm assuming they got a completely out-of-company director to shove every single terrible Japanese anime trope in there to appease...someone.

I never played the first, but I thought it was pretty fun. The whole concept of the plume is pretty awesome too, you pretty much go around sacrificing your friends' souls to become super powerful, and overkilling enemies to appease the evil entities you work for and stop them from sending assassins after you.

My postillion has been struck by lightning.
My biggest complaint about Covenant of the Plume is that it's a little on the short side if you only play through it once, and while the branching plot is designed around replay value, all the stuff that gets carried over in New Game+ means that the first half of the game will be a cakewalk on a second or third playthrough.

Hello? Can you hear me? ...Perhaps if I shout? AAAAAAAAAH!
It may be a cakewalk, but at least the story changes different enough that it doesn't feel like you're sleepwalking through the same tired plot copy+pasted. Plus the real meat of gameplay personally is the huge dungeon crawler you get access afterwards when you can use anyone and everyone (and the story's basically an after-hours parody).

It's not new and not an RPG in the usual sense of the word, but the game you are looking for is Terranigma. I wish someone would put more Soul Blazer games on the DS (or elsewhere, but the DS would probably be the best fit), but without loving it up like they somehow did for the Mana series. I have no idea why this genre seems to be so neglected, but alas.

Terranigma owns bones but I never get around to replaying it because I kinda frankly find the opening two acts to be incredibly dull. Until you hit Zuu it's just sorta bland and boring. Soul Blazer's great and doesn't have that problem.

Shadowrun Returns is coming in June (I think it was June, too lazy to actually check), so there's that. If you're really jonesing you can play Lionheart, but...don't.

SO4 is what happens when publisher forces a developer to make a game they did not want to make (SO3 was supposed to be the last game). I'm convinced they made it terrible like that so SE wouldn't force them to make another one.

You mean turn-based with action points? You'll have to add Divinity: Original Sin to your 'wait for' list.

Yes, that's right: the elf guy who calls Lymle a baby in one scene has implied romantic tension with her in another. No but you see she's actually 16 despite looking and acting like she's 4 so it's totally ok and not creepy at all!

I actually beat this game, though. The combat is so good and I laughed my way through the story.

I always though Zuu was the absolute low point of the game, since you have that horribly boring quest with the lion cub to get through. Otherwise I pretty much agree, IoG is the weakest of the three, Soulblazer the best.

That part was kind of a double whammy of sketchy plot AND sketchy translation. Original he just turned into a Leviathan, he wasn't eaten. Not that that makes any more sense!

That's kind of a weird game to play single player since the whole point of the game is the multiplayer component and the war stuff. Single player is mostly like a training mode to get ready to multiplayer (is there even a single player story? One didn't jump out at me). It's interesting to mess with though. I had no problems with Gyoru's patch personally but I didn't really put in the time to figure out if there was more to the game than training for multiplayer.

Ah, gotcha. I just saw a couple quick videos and it looks like a Vanillaware RPG. I'll give Gyoru's a shot since that single player sounds like an interesting if short diversion. Thanks!

The combat took too long to be not supereasy and way too long for you to unlock the various different abilities. The best dungeon in the game is that one with the multiple floors you can fall up and down through (Great wall? Pyramids? I don't remember) and it takes way too long to get to a point where the gameplay is interesting!!
Then again the above implies to Terranigma as well but at least the first two acts are really only about a third of the game at most.

Oh it looks like I was wrong, Zuu was the foresty area with the rolling logs and such. It's the area immediately after that (Canyon) with the lion cub escort quest.

Yeah, Canyon was garbage. Luckily it was the shortest area of the second act, and after it was the icy mountain and it was pretty cool.

I gotta admit I'm not a big fan of the Canyon or the Ice Mountain (or Norfest or Bloody Mary's Castle), but the Ra Tree and the Greclif are among my favorite dungeons.

Greclif is neat in theory but the fact that everything looks the same and gets you lost isn't particularly fun. The slow movement while climbing also bugged the hell out of me. Norfest isn't that bad, and neither is BMC (until you get to Bloody Mary herself, and gently caress that boss, especially because I rarely grind in games)

Magic ring did three damage to Bloody Mary!! I entered the castle at like level 18 or something, and you have to be level 22 to even do nontrivial damage. I just 1HP'd her to death.

I'm only about 1/3 through the game, it lacks the refinement you can get with a triple A budget. Combat plays like poor man's version of Dragon Age, but so far the story is quite engaging. Definitely something I would play to the end to see how it all unfolds. The one caveat would be that you need to be familiar the GOT universe and major character to get the most enjoyment. Got it on one of the steam sales so I would say it's worth $20. Just don't buy that other GOT game that is a RTS; critiques panned that one.

Still better than what I would have expected, I guess, but still not for me. Thanks for the information. I don't like ASoiaF to begin with and didn't exactly enjoy KOTOR for the gameplay, so that would've been some wasted money.
