Does anyone know why the New Friends episode of Yo Gabba Gabba (the one with a stoned-out-of-his-mind Jack Black, aka the best episode) is missing? People in the Netflix comments seem to think it is a big conspiracy to get people to shell out for the discs. What gives?

kuddles posted:I think it has to do with the way the region selector works. Netflix has a "travel mode" that gives you access to the catalogue of a country when you are in it, so I'm assuming that how the region selector is tricking it, so they just don't give you a queue for anything but your home region. Because I signed up for a US account and I don't have a queue for Canada. I dunno, I'm Finnish, have a Finnish account and I can add stuff on US Netflix (through Unblock-Us) to my queue VV

This has probably been posted many times before, but for everyone who wants to access the glorious american netflix library outside of US I would strongly recommend Media Hint. It's free and very easy to set up (it's a web browser plugin). It ONLY unblocks Hulu, Netflix and Pandora. Also, it's totally fine (as of now, anyway) says Netflix. There is just one downside; it only works if you stream from a web browser.

That must also be why the "upcoming" section on Instantwatcher went away. It really sucks that Netflix shut down that part of the API. It wasn't always the most accurate thing - movies and shows would often be added out of the blue - but at least it was something. It's weird that Netflix made a huge deal out of their APIs a few years ago, but seems to be slowly shutting parts of it down.

Tewratomeh posted:They can use instantwatcher.com like I assume most people here do? It sounds like Netflix is intentionally shutting down all those sites that let you know what's coming out by closing off that info. Which would be fine if they were going to provide a service like that themselves, that showed, by date, everything that was being added. If not, then they're just making things harder for their customers for no reason, which wouldn't be the first time.

The conspiracy theorist in my thinks they just want people to browse netflix.com and play movies that are recommended to you so they can shove more original series in your face. If they ever shut down instantwatcher.com I don't know what I'll do.

I don't care much either way, as I have them all on disc, I was just responding to the conversation that was already going on. Yeah,it's the inconsistency that's weird, although Netflix is usually good at putting up the original language track with English subtitles, which is why it doesn't make sense that 1 out of 3 movies in a loose trilogy would be dubbed. Maybe because it's the most well-known of the three?

So I caught up with two films that were mentioned a bit earlier in this thread. Senna Wow. This got so much hype and I have to say I really did not like it at all. This film felt incredibly biased to me. It had an agenda and it spent the entire first half painting Senna as a noble figure in the sport who fought against rear end in a top hat Frenchmen and their politics. Yet as the film goes on it becomes more and more obvious that Senna just had this really disturbing martyr complex. This could have been planned, in which case it would be kind of a cool reveal. But to me it did not seem like the director intended it that way. I feel like he presented the film as an unbiased portrait of a complex man even though there is clearly bias. The Wave A German film about a high school teacher that teaches his class about Autocracy by forming his class into one. Every step on their way to becoming this insular fascist culture was absolutely believable and I was incredibly impressed with how plausible the plot is. The film didn't pull any punches either. This film is genuinely intense and very interesting, especially if you consider the far right movements going on in Greece and other countries in the world right now.

I thought the only thing that was removed was the ability to show titles that are upcoming but haven't been added? Not sure why Netflix would get rid of that, I've changed my mind on canceling at least once from seeing what titles were being added soon.

The Scapegoat is marvelous throughout. In 1952 schoolmaster John Standing meets the aristocratic Johnny Spence, his exact double. After a night of drinking John wakes with a hang-over to find that Spence has disappeared, leaving him to substitute for him. It's not really a mystery, and more than a fish out of water story. Watching Standing stagger his way through another man's life is by turns awkward yet endearing, heartbreaking and enormously intense. The score is like an English butler--unobtrusive, just subtly doing its work...except for the last two minutes, which I've been listening to on repeat as I write this. Do not pass this up. Check it out if you like carefully constructed English aristocrat period pieces like Downton Abbey and Brideshead Revisited, or if you enjoy dramatic non-mysteries like Michael Clayton. We watched Holy Motors tonight. French as gently caress. Not sure how else to describe it, has a David Lynchian feel and I know that gets thrown around a lot but since the narrative structure is surrealist as gently caress that's the best analogue I can do.

And third season is coming this summer, I have no idea how they plan to keep it going without changing the pace or focus significantly.
