There are also hilarious RP servers that require you to pay real money for the ability to spawn props, and jumping is disabled. I bet those guys make a decent amount of money from morons who are willing to actually play on those servers.

Then there's the servers where everything is ran by votes, which is pretty much game-over when you've got some friends to play with.

Me and some pals found some 1942 occupation RP server on Gmod, it sounded terrible so we got on there hoping to annoy people and found out it's a lot more funny than it should be. Basically, since everyone votes no against each other for anything (Hoping they'll take the role instead), we were able to take over all the high positions in the German military simply voting yes when we saw another's vote thing pop up. Pretty soon I had Kommandant, another friend was the SS commander, two were the Gestapo and the last was the actual Fuhrer. Since there were enough of us to shoot down demotion votes and other "You're playing better than me" votes we had the server locked down. It was entertaining going around shaking down store-owners and "suspicious" characters, who'd sometimes refuse to pay our ridiculously high taxes and instantly be met with a Fuhrer announcement calling them an enemy of the state, followed by us or the army sending them straight to jail where they'd whine for however long they got stuck for.

Then on top of that, there was a resistance faction you can play as too, who were all really bad at hiding their identities and playing in general. They probably came up with most of the demotion votes, all because we'd have someone say they heard people discussing <illegal thing>, then raid the hell out of them and cart them all off to jail. Weapons were also illegal if you weren't in the military, so we'd end up finding someone standing in a shady place with a gun out, beat them down and send them off, which again usually had them whining in out-of-character chat. After a while they all pretty much stopped trying or they resorted to open warfare in the street, which they always lost either because it was literal children who couldn't aim or because it was our 16 or so Germans to their handful of guys.

To make it all better, just about every other time we'd arrest someone whether for legitimate or made-up crimes, they'd start wailing about how they were gonna call the admin and get us banned.

The GMs held an event a while back where they bountied themselves for 500 Liang and ran around a city so constable players (pay 5 Liang, capture bounties, bounty-ee goes to kung-fu prison) could make some cash. Goons, having none of this, marshaled an army to play Protect the President. Any GM in danger of dying to the mob of pubbies was darted down by non-constable Goons so they avoided going to jail. The GMs started spawning in the middle of our raid and had a good laugh with us at the expense of the ineffectual whiners. We did gently caress up a few times and found ourselves a few Ding (ding = gold > liang = silver > wen = copper for a WoW comparison) richer.

The only time I've ever spent on GMod RP servers was a couple days where I talked myself into the Hitman/Assassin position on one server and then was just really effective about it, since your typical RP player doesn't have a gun on them. Surprisingly effective at getting someone mad. At which point I actually listened to a conversation on that server and got the gently caress out.

It was a free HL2 mod that let you build and write whatever you wanted as a completely unfettered fuckaround game. There's tons of game modes, a lot of which are both very tiny and very dumb - mostly because of the communities that sprung up around the tiny dumb game modes.

The awfulness is what makes it fun most of the time. That and a lot of the playerbase is incredibly spergy, so you can make people super mad by doing something as simple as playing better than them or other mundane things.

Dr_Amazing

It's a long story
The core game is basically a big sandbox. Apparently it's also pretty easy to mod. So you get a lot of these games that are barely held together, with incomplete rules, and small insular communities. You end up with poorly documented games, that require some house rules to really be playable, so since the official way doesn't really work, everyone has a set of behaviors that they feel is the "right" way to play.

It doesn't help that a lot of gmod games really do require you to "play along." A lot of them work on concepts that can't really be enforced automatically, so you wind up with either overzealous admins, or rabid player bases.

It's basically a sandbox game that gives you a number of tools to play around with Source Engine/Havok physics. Other people have made/are making additional tools which let you do other things. You can make working pinball machines, air hockey, approximate the actual mechanics of a gun, make cars, mechs and planes of varying complexity; all kinds of stuff.

The problem is that doing any of that requires a fair bit of knowledge. Doing any of that well requires even more knowledge and a lot of time to calibrate everything.

So you can do that, or you can hop on a server and act like a retard.

A lot of it is actually pretty good, if rather out dated these days! But the majority of the player base is now 14 year olds, with all the downsides that implies.

Does make it a hoot to gently caress with people, though, so long as you mute your sound.

That's a god drat miracle because gently caress if the in-game GM's seem to give a poo poo about actually policing their game.

Oh and tonight we managed to piss off literally every single member of the Vietnamese bloc by using the handful of skills that forcibly yank the target back a few meters to pull people off bridges while said people were trying to attend an event that determines who gets to play puppet-leader and distribute a handful of e-honorabru useless items among the various factions in the game. I kid you not a fight so big the client couldn't handle rendering all the participants broke out outside the graveyard in the most populated city in the game with us and our allies while a crack squad of 420MLG commandos tried to burn down our base outside of the hours that actually let you do damage to said base all because we're not content to let a group of people who are willing to literally crash people's clients to get what they want run the server at their own whims.

Say what you want about Wushu goons but at least we play within the foundries of the game itself and don't resort to actual exploiting and code fuckery to enact our will.

SVN wasn't that hard to learn, you just had to remember to do the initial checkout in its own folder then copy it over the GMod folder, then you could do SVN updates directly from the GMod folder later.
