I would say most songs that you enjoy make good weed smoking music. Not entirely sure that this is a serious question but Ill second the new KRIT tape and also the Underachievers - Indigoism tape. Lots of drug references within.

Unreleased Dilla track. Its hard to define what made Dilla remembered and vaulted but I think he had good taste. He was a taste maker and trend setter. His musical preferences are superior in sampling and beats. In a world were everything has been done, Dilla did it better.

This is not hiphop but I subscribed to Lofty305 on youtube and he makes a bunch of weird poo poo that's cool.

It is that + the "he died early" factor. He worked with a lot of hip-hop pioneers of his time and was really responsible for defining and honing their sound. You always knew you were gonna get something unique from a Dilla track as far as the samples and overall quality.

Trucks is pretty tight. Interesting use of that Gary Numan sample, as per usual.

Lofty305 (and all of MetroZu really) are pretty cool. It's just extremely hard to keep up with everything that they've released. A few weeks ago I picked up like 4 albums from them, and it seems like they've added about 10 more after that.

And most of the credit Dilla gets now is almost entirely because he died early. Dudes were making GBS threads on his stuff early in his career, and I'd argue Madlib does everything he did, but slightly better.

And speaking of Madlib, rumor has it he's working on a new Quasimodo album for the summer. Which would be about the best news ever (since he's back working on rap producing instead of loving around with those medicine show mixes).

Flatbush Zombies are absolutely insane live. Juice is a real show man, the guy can get the crowd going wild in a matter of seconds. Meech flung his 40oz all over the crowd than ran backstage and grabbed a bucket of ice and chucked the whole thing into the crowd. The best part though was when they played smells like teen spirit but I couldn't tell if it was a remix or not because the crowd went absolutely insane and i was in a most pit and couldn't barely hear the words over the bass and being knocked around.

Madlib doesn't exactly do what Dilla was doing, I would say he gets a little more abstract and almost more experimental. Dilla was alot more straightforward with the boom bap, but I think that's largely the era / the format he was working in - I don't think he was doing much with computers until Donuts.

That's not to say Madlib is getting the benefit of technology, as I don't know his workflow, but I think that "if Dilla was still alive" he would have had the opportunity to step into the new possibilities of software production.

Madlib's been around just about as long as Dilla was. And I'm pretty sure they used a lot of the same poo poo when it comes to recording (I seem to remember reading about that the time Donuts and Beat Konducta 2 came out). Donuts was somewhat of Dilla's attempt to branch into the type of stuff Madlib had been doing.

I just think Madlib really gets lost in the shuffle when it comes to talking about good producers because he's never really had super well known singles and has kinda faded away from doing much rap stuff in the last few years. Only thing I can really remember him doing recently was the Gibbs stuff, and that's been coming out at a snail's pace (although each EP had like 5 extra beats on it).

Dilla's resurgence and reputation, even pre-death, was still pretty impressive considering he was partly responsible for those last two dull-as-gently caress Tribe Called Quest albums.

Word yeah - Beat Konducta series was what I meant about the experimental poo poo.

Madlib is definitely overlooked nowadays, he's definitely under appreciated but I think it is largely due to his lack of visibility, I think he prefers to keep it street and also doesn't really have a crossover sound that would have radio potential. But he's one of the illest doing it for sure.
