When I was rereading this a while back, I noticed the big shift in tone around the time Schierke showed up. The magic being something that is comprehensible to humans is a huge shift in the dynamics. Before then, it's just evil spirits, and Puck, and that's it. Then we get named "great spirits" of different elements and directions that are sympathetic to humans, and now magic is something you can use instead of just being used by it, in the form of apostles and whatnot.

I don't think it's bad, necessarily, but it's definitely different from everything that came before. There's a definite difference in tone between Guts chopping apostles apart with a giant hunk of iron and his kid sidekick stabbing a troll with a fire-enchanted dagger.

Chapter 201 is probably my favorite manga chapter of all time. It contains no action whatsoever, it's just the main characters sitting around talking about magic, and it absolutely engrossing.

Gotz gets brought up a lot as an inspiration but that isn't true, Miura actually had no idea Gotz existed until after he created Berserk. Oddly enough most of the influences and inspirations were from science fiction books and film. Which by the way, Slan is a fantastic book. I can never pull myself through Ubik though.

Goethe made Berlichingen into a folk hero by writing at tragedy about him. This dude also had an SS division named after him in WW2, the 17th SS. The division emblem was his big metal fist.

e: I'm not sure if you can tie the SS's vision of themselves as noble knights building a better world back to Griffith's grand delusion, but, there you go.

As someone who has just read everything available over an only-slightly-longer time period (4 days) - its emotionally exhausting. I don't want to spoil anything, but I felt shattered by Griffith's torture and crippling, and the protracted massacre of the Hawks, and when it got to the bit where they go into a spiritual realm and it is actually nice and Miyazaki-esque rather than full of cancer, rape and death, I almost started crying with relief.

In a lifetime of reading pulp and popular fiction, I don't think I have ever come across a series that swings so rapidly and wildly from the most crass and seedy violence, body horror and tentacle porn to the most heartbreaking emotion and multilayered character drama. I honestly can't decide whether the author is an idiot or a saint and have come to the reluctant conclusion that that probably means he is a genius, since only real genius is so baffling and hard to categorise.

Plus he draws real good - he obviously likes his Bosch, Botticelli, Dore and Durer. Griffith looks like a male version of one of Botticelli's graces or his Venus, all wavy hair, pointy nose and gangly limbs, and the scenes of hell are just astonishing: Lovecraft as illustrated by Gustav Dore.

Wow. That was quite an experience.

I think your'e a really sweet and forgiving individual. It makes me hopeful that this series will reach a natural good end, instead of a "the end...?". In a lifetime of fathoming the multifaceted transistor technologies cultivated by the Japanese and assembled by the Chinese, I can;t really tell the difference.

Femto is really just a fifth wheel. If you doubt it, there's probably a trailer for the next Berserk movie. Pray the protagonizers make it to Elfheim before the real world becomes less so. (thanks for the Bosch namedrop)

Inspirationwise, I stand firm that Guts and Bambino are like Nero and Clauuuudius.

I don't think the tonal shift in the series since Guts' new pals is Miura setting us up for another eclipse-esque mass slaughter plot twist. I think it's just a maturation on the author's part. He started his series when he was in college; he's nearly 50 now. People's tastes change over time. I think introducing some levity into Berserk is the best move he's made, otherwise constant brutal nihilistic violence would just be tiring.

That's pretty much my assumption. He just got too tired/bored with the unceasing grimdark and decided to take things in a different direction. I agree with whoever said that he really needed to just end the thing ages ago and then start a new project, but he went with this instead. Still, it's Berserk, so you can't completely assume that it's not all going to go to poo poo suddenly and violently.

Huh, combined with looking at Spielberg: Indiana Jones movies then Vs. Indiana Jones movie now in the Redlettermedia review makes me wonder. What would the story would be like if 1990 Miura had written it from start to finish? 2000 Miura?

I suppose he has a basic outline of how the story was going to go from the beginning (I think?) but he's bound to change things here and there..

Kind of a depressing thought really. I used to think that an author dying before they could finish (dammit, Trinity Blood) was the worst thing that could happen, and as long as the Original Author is around that everything will be okay. But it doesn't work that way. People change over time. In fact the you that started reading this no longer exists! :gonk:

Or even worse, if the author is scared of not finishing before his/her death and rushes the entire ending (see: Dark Tower series.)

Trinity Blood was never good, though.

Even if Miura dies tomorrow Berserk will be at worst an unfinished masterpiece. There are certainly worse legacies for a mangaka to leave. For example, Tadashi Kawashima finished his manga while on his deathbed, but Alive was never exactly exceptional.

Where is a good place to purchase Berserk manga volumes? I used to get them at Amazon.com, but recently Amazon completely sold out of tons of volumes and all of the 3rd party sellers are placing new copies up for absurd prices. Just take a look at this page for volume 7:

$60 for a new copy. And it is like that for many, many volumes. Did they stop printing new runs?

Well, it's always had some humor. Puck was there from the very beginning! Really, the Golden Age was the most humorless arc because of his absence.

I seriously can't wait for the movies to get to the post-Golden Age arc and introduce him.

Yeah, on reflection that's my opinion too - I think nihilism, ultraviolence and rape art are, in some ways, a young man's game. He probably just wearied of the endless slaughter. Which is fine, the world has more in it than just despair and death, so it's not like he's somehow being dishonest or selling out. And the more recent chapters certainly have some amazing elements.

Also, it's interesting that in that interview link, when he is asked what authors and artists influenced him, he cites Go Nagai straight away. Tonally, I think he and Nagai are pretty different (sort of "nasty little boy gleefully playing with horrible imagery and ideas!" versus "adult with bleak worldview confronting extreme horror as the condition of existence"). But there's definitely a similar interest in monsters, violating propriety (and everything else) etc. etc.

This is probably why Mirua introduced so many child sidekicks and likes to watch Idolmaster in his spare time. Writing/drawing horrific acts of brutality with little hope to be found, for decades on end, must have left him wanting something more cute and wholesome, no fucks given.

Read Devilman. The nastier moments in Berserk remind me a lot of the last volume or so of Devilman, so it doesn't really shock me that Miura was heavily influenced by Nagai.

e: Fortunately (speaking as someone who's rereading Devilman right now), Miura didn't take much artistic influence from Nagai. Seriously, the one bad part of Devilman is that the art is absolutely hilarious at times, and it kinda ruins the tone in some parts.

I went and marathon'd most of the manga up to chapter 322 in the past few days and at some point in the 100's or 200's I noticed just how much his art had improved since the beginning, from fairly standard 90's art to his current super detailed stuff. I think it was seeing the murals on the Vandemion house ballroom ceiling that made me really notice it. Every tile had a different mural on it, stretching all the way to the back of the room. :aaaaa:

Also, reading this after having experienced Dark Souls first was pretty fun too, catching all the origins of the references.

Well, if you haven't heard, the third movie is getting a DVD release on June 19th, so we'll have a new rendition of the Eclipse to tide us over through the long, never ending slog to Elfhelm.

And unfortunately the preview for the next chapter that they put into volume 37 shows that we'll have plenty more two-page spreads of Falconia before we even approach Elfhelm!
