Yeah, if there's one word I could use to describe Dra+KoI it would be "hyper". The game made me laugh at a few points, like this CG (small spoilers) which is nice because most Japanese humor just doesn't appeal to me. It only took me an hour and a half to finish by going straight through and ctrling past the hscenes. I think Moogy went a bit overboard with the swearing but the patch is otherwise fine.

On a different note, what would you guys consider to be a good starter VN to introduce somebody to the genre? Something like Planterian or Narcissu that is short and sweet with no choices or porn or Katawa Shoujo which is a lot longer but pretty vanilla or something else?

Honestly I would say depending on the person it might be smarter to wean them on something like 999 since it's a lot easier to get someone to play a VN/adventure game than it is to play a straight VN.
Not to mention you can then point them to the infinity series afterwards.

Katawa Shoujo is probably a good bet too, since while I found it to be extremely boring, it definitely introduced a ton of people to VNs so it totally is newbie friendly.

This one definitely hinges on the fact that the person would not be turned off by the..explicit nature of the content but Saya No Uta is a good one if only because it has a good story, great music, and can be finished in just a few hours. The extreme/disturbing premise tends to intrigue people I've noticed which is a point in its favor as a starting point, in my opinion.

“It is very hard for anyone to have even played one visual novel and maintain the position that they are just porn games,” she said. “Nowadays, they are character-focused stories about 'real' characters that you will come to care deeply about… [Sex] constitutes a very small part of the overall game's volume (about 3 percent), in the same way Hollywood films contain short sex scenes.”

I wanted to believe her, so I downloaded a visual novel called Season of the Sakura. It was originally released in 1996, was translated into English in 2002, and is apparently one of the greatest visual novels of all time, which seemed like a pretty good place to start.

It's not... bad, but it's fairly generic (and all the characters are obviously stolen, half from Evangelion, half from Magic Knight Rayearth) and is a 1996 DOS port of a 1994 PC-98 game. It's also entirely a "pick a girl, go through school, bang her" game.

I actually haven't played Umineko at all and I'm completely blind to it aside from a few small things (it's a mystery series, seeing a few nonspoilery screenshots, the music is apparently really good, and there's two characters in it called Beatrice and Butler). I doubt I would have any interesting commentary to give though and I'm kind of shy about talking over during streams.

Oh yeah I'm aware it's long as hell and I would probably be burnt out early too. But klapman managed to miraculously not get spoiled at all at Muv Luv for his stream aside from one extremely vague thing. And I was planning on reading Higurashi before anyway.

I completely understand if you're not comfortable streaming though. I'm taking a break from F/SN while I have exams, but next week, I'll be finishing off UBW. I'm not going to stream myself because of reasons, but would people be interested in seeing my reactions on IRC? I mentioned I might do it a while ago, but I didn't hear anything back.

The funny thing is, is I actually wasn't even spoiled by that in the way everyone thought. At that point I was convinced that Takeru jumping back into Extra would get everything all lovely, even though it wasn't blatantly stated at that time. So when someone said "hey did he meet Slutmika yet", I was under the impression that we'd go back at some point and everyone would be some coked-out druggie and Sumika would be trading sex for heroin or something crazy like that. Instead it was just a guy who didn't like her much as a character. :shobon:

But yeah, especially for Umineko which is at it's core a mystery novel, I wouldn't count on lightning striking twice regarding spoilers. But then, considering that you'd be getting largely the same audience as I did, I don't think that anyone would want to spoil you at all. People like watching others go through the same stuff they did, to compare their reactions and get back a little bit of that fun they had the first time through. And honestly, it's actually pretty hard to get burnt out on it. It's really just playing a visual novel while talking to people.

The only thing that's a bit difficult is to get used to constantly vocalizing your thoughts so that people know what's running through your head, and getting used to that early on means that when poo poo hits the fan you'll just do it automatically. On one hand that makes it really fun to watch, but on the other that's also how you get my ridiculous speech about how I was going to kill all the fictional aliens to death because HONOR AND PRIDE AND GOD BLESS HUMANITY :japan:. What i'm saying is do it, it's fun!

I can think of a group that would consider Seasons of the Sakura to be "the best Visual Novel ever" but I kind of assumed they all died out years ago: the people who got into the genre by playing the original commercially available porny visual novels of early MS DOS days and are filled with nostalgia of the time period, probably through something like The Underdogs (as opposed to modern VN readers who now come in the genre through Phoenix Wright/999/KS/Fate/Muv Luv.)

I guess it's sort of like how Final Fantasy 1 which is considered a "classic" but I think it's a pretty terrible bug-filled imbalanced mess by modern RPG design standards. But I guess something to keep in mind that there were much worse/dumber VNs than Seasons of the Sakura back in the days (and I guess in FF1's time, it probably looked like a masterpiece compared to some other bad Dragon Quest clone)

Thinking back about it, boy did those games not age very well, the other game I think people are nostalgic about from that era was the ironically named "True Love" and the character designs just look like Lovecraftian monsters to me now with their strange body proportions and pencil-thin necks.

As someone who has been into this genre from the start I think it's kind of interesting how things "progressed" in the community. Did you guys know there was a time that Kanon was once this holy grail of non-translated VN that everyone constantly laments about it not being translated? I think when the translation patch of Kanon finally came out (many years way too late for it to have any sort of impact) there was just kind of a shrug in the community but at the time of Kanon's Japanese release it sure looked like Citizen Kane when compared to the nukige that JAST turned out at a ridiculously fast pace.

Speaking of which - Season of the Sakura was part of a uh, trilogy of JAST games that got ported from PC-98 to IBM DOS way the gently caress after Windows 95 came about. The others being Runaway City and Three Sisters Story. There's a review of Three Sisters Story on the front page, under Awful Anime.

3SS was the first VN sorta game I played, followed by the other two and of course, True Love and Nocturnal Illusion. I still kinda like Nocturnal Illusion..

Ultimately the issue is that the genre isn't really deep - the list of good games isn't really large. The 'introductory' games pretty much would be identical to the games you want to play.

I suppose I'd suggest something like Christine Love's Digital. I played Narcissu for a bit, but it's really heavy going. KS is apparently very slow going as well. The likes of FSN and Tsukihime at least have some action to get people engaged.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to start on Tsukihime or FSN until they've hammered in them the notion that VNs are books with some multimedia elements and minimum interactivity. While they have action, it's after long treks of exposition and drama, so it's not something I'd suggest to the crowd that doesn't like books in the first place, or who expect entertainment akin to an action movie where they just passively sponge the pretty visuals.

Fate is my first visual novel, and I've loved it / put quite a lot of time into it. As long as you're not expecting to be doing much, visual novels are awesome.

Anyhow, couple questions: Day 3 of Heaven's feel has Shirou dreaming sexually about Rin. What replaced that in Realta Nua? I seem to remember seeing a CG of Rin and Ayako getting intimate in the PG-13 way, but I've never been quite clear about it. Also, was Shirou's dream about the Fuyuki fire and cold induced by Rider? I seem to also remember hearing about that, but as far as I know that event is never brought up again, even when Rider becomes a house guest after Day 9.
