I got an email that OOTP has added a new quickstart game that can be downloaded. Someone made all the roster changes to MLB teams that were effective as of game 162 and then put those teams at the start of the 2012 season. Because I really want to do is simulate an entire Red Sox or Cubs season with their post-deadline teams....

Surprised this has been inactive for this long. Anyway, just thought I'd bring up that OOTP 14 is taking pre-orders. If you order before Feb. 15, you save $5 as usual (so $35 instead of the normal $40).

Here are the "new" OOTP 14 features: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/newsletters/nl0109/ This is the one I want to watch to see what happens: New Fielding Ratings Development System In real life, young players usually start out playing positions that demand a certain grade of athleticism. However, as players mature, they often grow out of these so-called skill positions (such as shortstop, catcher, or center field) and have to shift to the right side of the defensive spectrum. This is now properly modeled in the OOTP player development engine. For example, if you draft that talented 18-year-old 6'3" 175 lb shortstop, you may end up with a below-average 230 lb corner outfielder eventually.

In OOTP11/13 I had a Third Baseman's defensive skills erode so badly he went from an 7 to a 0 in the position after his age 32 season. It was awful. http://www.rujasu.net/scmlb/news/html/players/player_32771.html I really hope OOTP14 fixes draft classes/amateur players. The automatically generated draft classes are so bad. I think there's some stuff in the changes for 14 that should help fix this with feeder leagues/international/etc.

Hey guys, I'm in a simulation league that's about to start up. We don't use OOTP (We use Diamond Mind Baseball) and I'm having a problem deciding which park to pick as my "Home Park". It's a 12-team, 30-man roster, NL only league. We haven't drafted yet, but my team is pretty much set. Here's my position players: C: Carlos Ruiz 1B: Freddie Freeman/Paul Goldschmidt 2B: Chase Utley 3B: David Freese SS: Starlin Castro LF: OPEN (need to draft one) CF: Andrew McCutchen RF: Giancarlo Stanton Should I try to enhance the power I have in the lineup by playing my home games in Great American or Miller? And the Starting rotation: Stephen Strasburg Kyle Lohse Ross Detwiler Lance Lynn Jeff Karstens Or, since I don't have a great rotation, should I play somewhere like PNC or AT&T to help my pitching? Or does it not loving matter at all and I should just play somewhere cool?

If you throw that rotation in GAB or Miller you'll get crushed. I play in a DMB league and you build your team to your park. For example, in my league, I use 1985 Three Rivers Stadium as my home park. It's +130 for LHR and +80 for RHR. However, it's +120 for R2B and only +100 for L2B. So my lineup is set for lefty homer power and righties double power. Pitching wise, DMB loves homers and absolutely LOVES matchups. You have a bunch of righties, so I'd find a park that plusses righty homers and suppresses lefty homers. E: And it matters, dear god it matters. If you need any more info, just ask questions in the thread. Tavarin plays in the same league as I do and he can help answer questions. I don't have access to the game at home(the commissioner of our league has it); can you give me a couple suggestions of good RHR parks? I found a fan-graphs report that shows 2011 Petco with a (low) 95RHR, but only a 83LHR. It's really good to know that DMB favors *~matchups~*. It would explain why Strasburg doesn't act like himself against LHB. I've also noticed DMB kind-of hates the running game.

Wrigley - 86 LHR, 107 RHR Fenway - 80 LHR, 115 RHR I'll look at a few more when I get to work. And yeah, basically make sure you're looking at stats and if you're not in the top 10% for the IRL league, odds are that skill won't be great in the DMB league. E: Take Fenway if you can, in our league someone is using 1955 Fenway, it owns. code:

OOTP could really use someone on staff just to work on major league contracts. There is a long list of issues with them every year, or with players with the same name having swapped ratings/stats or players with the wrong handedness for bat/throw. I just don't get how this is an issue at every launch. In addition to a little website called MLB.com, there are at least two free websites (Cot's and MLB Depth Charts) devoted to nothing except contracts and rosters and a lot of unofficial team blogs do a good job of keeping track of changes in their team's rosters, too.

OOTP has some neat new additions. You can now set your bullpen up with roles and when each pitcher should be used. I think the roles are: Middle Relief, Long Relief, Setup, Closer, Specialist. And then you can identify even further with 'Use after 6th/7th/8th inning' or 'Lefty/Righty specialist' On the offense side of things, you can also set priority for pinch hitters/pinch runners. It's worked out so far in the time I've simulated. One thing I'm still unsure about is the new 'talent generation system.' Draft classes still seem to be on the poor side, while the inclusion of International League FAs/IFAs generate really poor talent.
|
# ? Apr 17, 2013 16:44 |

Yeah, draft classes are usually at pretty much 2* talent by the time my second pick comes around, which is pretty annoying. It really makes me not care about losing a pick to sign a comp FA because the odds that the pick I lose ever comes close to the current ability of the guy I'm signing are slim. I think it's supposed to represent the fact that a lot of guys will get better over time but I'd rather have lower volume. I had 125 guys in my two rookie league affiliates. One 1B spec I've had for just over two years just started having his potential start climbing and I checked his stats (because stats generally correlate with ratings/potential boosts) and he hadn't gotten a single at bat in the two years I had him. Which makes cutting guys to lower the roster even harder (because you never know who might be the guy that breaks out!). IFA are a pain in the rear end, too. I think my scout has "found" someone with a higher than 1.0 potential once, and it was a 2.0

I bought OOTP the day it came out and have been playing it steadily the last couple of days. There are a lot of down years produced by very good players but other than that I think it's pretty drat good, as usual. I've bought the game probably 4 of the last 6 years or so and usually end up getting hooked at some point. The pitching screen, as mentioned, is a big improvement and I love the player development email as well. Other than that, and the international free agent screens, though, I don't see a lot of differences. The emails show little things like Player X hosted a charity event but that's not anything you'd really care about. I did have a player on my team suffer an injury when his girlfriend beat him up, or something to that effect. That was neat.

The OOTP devs need to play Xpert Eleven and read up on their random events for better ideas. Things like "Player x helped an old lady with her groceries and she turned out to be the mother of the team chairman who donated an extra million dollars upon hearing the news" are kind of fun.

I signed Brian Wilson to a contract to a 2 year deal and it played out just fine in the end of year one. During Spring Training in year 2, I got a "Brian Wilson is in the best shape of his life" news event. The development report that came out showed that he had a stat boost which accompanied it. He basically got bumped another level up in Stuff/Movement/Control and even added some MPH to his fastball. It was really neat/awesome. Another event email I got was that Buck Showalter opened his own brewery called Buck's Beer or something goofy like that. It made me laugh. As an aside, I won the World Series in my second year with the Astros and got the "Moneyball" achievement, which I guess means winning the World Series with the lowest payroll. We rode Lucas Harrell's 3/4/7 (out of 10) stat line to a 5.6 WAR in the regular season, and he threw 3 CG (1 SHO) in the post season. This year is really weird when it comes to ratings. People with 5-6s (out of 10) seem to perform better than they did in the past when you consider that to be league average talent. Bryce Harper also hits 34 home runs before the All Star Break as a 10 power. Harlock fucked around with this message at 20:58 on Apr 23, 2013 |

I had a random event where a pitcher I drafted out of college spent three years in the minors before suddenly retiring and going to the NBA because apparently he had also been drafted in the second round of the NBA draft back when I drafted him. Was real annoying because I had just made a couple trades to make room for him in the rotation since he was getting pretty good.

There are .txt files you can edit to make up stories and injuries of your own, though I don't think there's the ability to make a random event like in tadashi's scenario.

What little veterans I had in the first year I traded for prospects because what's the point in having Ricky Nolasco on a team that's completely awful? Loria almost fired me because he expected a .500 team. Loria is the cheapest and most demanding owner in the game Does the personality of a player affect anything? As in, living up to his potential and things like that? I remember a version or two ago I had signed Elijah Dukes, who had the perfect attributes I was looking for and signed him very cheap, but my entire team played like poo poo because none of them liked him. I think people on the OOTP boards have researched it a bunch, you can read one related thread here. I usually strive to get guys who have a high work ethic/high intelligence. They seem to pan out more as prospects and have room for growth. This may just be a bias though.

They really need to do something with contracts in OOTP. I signed Kershaw in FA for an AAV of less than 19 million after my second season. It helps that he had the "sign immediately" thing happen so there was no bidding war but I really think with guys like that they need to shoot higher. I see it happen with a lot of guys, too, signing for less than I really think they should be getting. And if my experiences in 13 are still true, when you get farther on in the league and owners progressively increase the team budgets it gets even more ridiculous because the average contracts don't increase. It's not as big of a problem in online leagues but when I'm playing single player I just become the yankees after 5-10 years. IcePhoenix fucked around with this message at 01:17 on Apr 25, 2013 |

The financial system in OOTP's always been a bit weird. You could always edit average salaries for each tier of players every few seasons, but you really shouldn't have to.

For ages I thought the fact that half the teams are no longer in the red was a bug. I did notice that contract thing, it seems like in a few years you have Yankee free agent money as the As even if you have a small budget.
