Looking for some advice, I've started writing some code for a company I work for. I mostly do sysadmin stuff, but I've started writing some validation check programs that are going in to our daily workflow, and are pretty important, even if they're not doing a whole lot. The number of people between me and the COO of a large company who wanted this check added is only two. Typically there's about 12 layers of management between me and the C level executives. My question is, how do I log stuff like this, so I can regurgitate it to a manager at another company during an interview, or provide proof that I actually did what I said I did, without "taking the code home with me" or some other ethics violation? I feel like I am growing out of the bounds and skill set of my original job title and I'm looking for a concrete way to show this to potential employers.

You "prove it" by describing what you did and then answering questions pertaining to it accurately. Sometimes they'll ask for a sample program, but you'll never supply propriatery code. Personally I ask for sourceforge/guthub accounts and check out any code contributions they've made.

For example, I pay $700 for a three bedroom house within walking distance of town (knoxville). In parts of rural AL $15k is very livable.

The poverty level for two persons is $15,510 I suppose if you commute via bicycle that's possible. I survived on unemployment for a year on about $19,000 near downtown Dallas, but then again I didn't have a car payment and didn't have a lot of places to drive to (gas). I certainly wasn't going to the dentist twice a year, saving for retirement or taking two week's vacation in the Caribbean.

Cross-posting this from the Goons for Hire thread: Developer Wanted Location: Bothell, WA -- about twenty minutes northeast of Seattle. Languages: The LAMP stack -- Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP. Contact: Drop a mail to my username at pleh dot net and I'll get you the full job description and application instructions. Have a PDF copy of your resume available, but do not mail it to me. What you'll be doing: Maintenance on our home-grown ERP/CRM/CMS, 50% of which is actually extracting requirements from people. People skills and organizational skills are just as important as coding skills. You don't have to have a great deal of experience with PHP itself if you've worked in comperable scripting languages. It's mostly back-end work, with a bit of front-end. No design skills needed. The codebase is very "legacy" but improving that is a priority. You'll be the junior of a two member dev team. The senior member has some offbeat development ideologies, but is a skilled developer. You'll be working with him, me (sysadmin & sometimes dev) and our awesome pop-culture fountain of a helpdesk tech. Our boss is the best damned manager I've ever worked for, with amazing people skills and some of the worst puns that have ever been created.

Two positions open in Allen, Texas (North Dallas area) Stable, profitable company but still small enough that you get to wear many hats and solve cool problems. Insurance, 401k with matching, vacation time, flexible scheduling, all the usual accoutrements. Hybrid ninja troubleshooter/ops role. SQL Server (Query writing), Troubleshooting, Python, Linux/Ubuntu, Java would be good to know as well. Examples would be: - Nagios says our process is blowing up, comb through logs figure out a null pointer exception caused a thread exit, determine root cause and create ticket with development - You're integrating to a new banking platform and we need additional features added to our Python app, add them - Accounting wants to know how many customers are setup with XYZ feature, write the query and get them an answer http://fortepaymentsystems.theresumator.com/apply/dOgMPD/Technical-Operations-Analyst.html A straightforward web developer role. SQL Server, C#, MVC, JS, AJAX, HTML/CSS, etc. Actually might have two of these open up, this is for a Jr type role and the other would be for a senior. http://fortepaymentsystems.theresumator.com/apply/gGndg9/Software-Developer.html Nukelear v.2 fucked around with this message at 19:04 on Apr 23, 2013 |

Hey guys. Atlanta-based goon here. I'm desperately trying to get into IT because I work at a credit union and I don't want to get stuck doing banking my entire life. I've got a B.A. in psychology and sociology a well as an a+ cert. I'm really looking for something entry-level, especially help desk or technician related. I've got no experience outside a little customer service at a computer store, and it's causing most places I apply to turn me down. I've got tons of customer service experience and am willing to do/learn pretty much whatever. I really just need a foot in the door and I can do the rest. I can't afford much of a pay-cut, so it'd need to be $11/hour or more. If anyone has any leads that'd be super.

Are you looking for part-time or full-time? My work in Norcross is looking to add another person to our NOC, and it's an entry-level position that doesn't require much previous experience. I think the position is only part-time though; starting pay is around $12-15.

I'm really looking for something full-time. Norcross is in my area, and NOC sounds like something I'd be suited for, but I really can't afford to make much less than $21k/year at the moment. Darn student loans Edit: Still, I wouldn't mind taking something that paid a LITTLE bit less (maybe around $18,000) if it gets me a foot in the door. Thanks for the response, though! Double Edit: I take that back. I'd be very interested in at least applying. If it gives me experience and enhances my skill then I'd just have to look at it like a paid internship. It'd also give me more time to work on my certifications. I'm PMing you now about it. FuriousAngle fucked around with this message at 06:00 on May 3, 2013 |
