Here it's "if you're pro-choice on abortion, why not on guns?"

Or to use the anti-abortion dysphemism for the opposition, if you're pro-death on abortion, why not on guns?

I'm sorry, but all I can see is battle of the dongs.

In all seriousness though, that's a perfect example of the kind of person you can't argue with. She has no interest in making any actual point and instead likes to argue in what she imagines to be little morsels of ideology buttoned up in convenient little one liners.

Isn't forced conversion a big no-no in Islam?

Forced conversion is generally frowned upon in most major religions. It doesn't mean it doesn't happen, in Islam or otherwise. So really yeah singling out Islam for that is pretty dumb.

What is it with everybody and bacon lately? I mean, people have always loved it (I never did), but it seems like our culture's put it up on this pedestal within just the last couple of years.

EDIT: Muslims have never required conversion, if only to guarantee access to that sweet, sweet dhimmi tax money.

Whenever something happens with a Muslim the crazies come out of the wood works and start saying they should water board with bacon grease and bury them in pig poo poo. This is of course after you shoot them with a pork bullet. It's kinda absurd. I suppose it's the same with red meat during Lent for Catholics though.

The main line of rebuttal is that there is a maximum grade achievable but there is no maximum amount of money. The disparity between the richest and poorest people is thus orders of magnitude larger than the disparity between highest grade and lowest. So the people who get As are not comparable to the people who have the most money.

Also, it is easy to show that the people who work harder in school get better grades, and it is easy to show that the same is not true for money, though people try to claim there is a direct relationship there.

In this analogy, yes it is possible to get good grades by working hard, but the overwhelmingly stronger correlation is if your parents own the company that writes and scores the tests.

It's been rewarding so far, I just wish Facebook wasn't garbage so I could be notified when someone responds.

I can't promise it will live up to the hype, but I tried my best.
We really need to add the GPA redistribution thing to the OP. Here was my response when a friend posted the Reagan video. It's a mish-mash of responses from this thread.

quote:

The analogy of wealth to academic grading is fundamentally flawed, and that's why this video doesn't work.

First of all, there isn't a set amount of grade points to be distributed, but there is a finite amount of dollars. It might be more reasonable, then, to limit the amount of possible points available to the entire class. Say we have 100 students in the class and 10,000 points to distribute. Because this video seems to equate academic performance to wealth, I think it's fair to assume that these grade points could be handed out on a curve equal to the distribution of wealth in the United States as of 2007. Here's how everybody would do:

1 student will have 3,460 (out of 100) points.
9 students will have 3,850 points to share (427 points per person, average).
The other 90 students will have 2,690 points to share (30 points per person, average).

Congratulations, 90% of the class flunked, despite the fact that in this scenario, everybody could have gotten 100 points.

The other problem with this analogy is that grade points are "spent" all at once. You can't carry your (somehow better than perfect) score through to another test. If you wanted this to be an accurate comparison of wealth redistribution, you'd have to mention that the students with 30 times the points they need can use them to influence the questions on the next test, or maybe just save them so their kids can cruise through school.

Don't get me wrong. I know that a flat average redistribution would be entirely ridiculous both on paper and in practice, but reasonable and practical socialism doesn't necessitate that. If we were to say that high earners should never need more than, say, 400 points, that brings those 90 failing students up to passing grades (Ds, but even so). And hell, if we did that, their parents might not beat them and they might even study harder.

EDIT: ugh God, sorry, forgot who made this thread for a moment... :(
