Here's something short I banged out last night with the Traktor app on the iPad, which I'm in love with after using vinyl for like fifteen years. A sort of eclectic mix of leftfield instrumentals like clams casino, flosstradamus, and lockah mixed with pop artists like t-pain, the cataracs, and drake. Hey guys, my name is Joel, I go by Killtron, and I've been DJing in and around Dallas for ~7 years now, started with the whole bloghouse thing, and have tried to keep a few steps ahead of the game even though I eventually stopped DJing out altogether. I got a residency again about a month ago, and it's been fun DJing regularly again. I haven't had a chance (and probably never will) to listen to the mixes here, but the playlists look really nice and I've definitely bookmarked a few. I'm going to start off by sharing some of my favorite ones, and some of my early ones. I used to be a much more party oriented DJ, but now most of my mixes have an overlying theme and feel to them. Honestly, aside from it being facetious, one of the main reasons I even called it is that there was that big trap influenced sound going around the internet, just on people's blogs before it got huge with the wee ones like it is now. Of course now any rear end in a top hat layers on the snares rolls, whips out his best Massive presets and thinks he's hot poo poo. I don't even dislike the genre, but there's just so much garbage.

See: brostep, moombahton, 'trap'. It can be frustrating because as you say, there's always a few nice sounds hidden away under the near-impenetrable mound of arse.

Sooo, I've been trying this mix thing for a few years now, but I've never actually come around to or been able to tough out an entire set. I am most used to Ableton, but since Ableton can do literally anything I get bogged down in the process a lot of the time and never take a few segments of a great mix into an entire released set. This set is really the first official set I've put out besides a few unrecoded parties here and there. The set is mixed a little but is mostly dry and could use some work. I'm releasing this as a part 1 to a longer mix that will take form (eventually). I think I screwed up my levels, so the mix gets much louder towards the end. Again nothing is EQ'd or effected, so there's a lot of potential for the final product. I've always had difficulty coming up with cool transitions that sound good and don't make the mix overly complicated. I can still use some work on my transitions (a live mixer would be nice to work with!) but looking to see what you guys think, how I might improve. I like to compare my style of mixing to Erol Alkan.  Got inspiration from artists like Minnesota, Big Gigantic, and similar...I've seen the genre called Electro Funk, almost feels right. Regardless, I've tried to blend that sound with some more familiar bangers and happily present the fruit of my labors. Had to do a lot of bouncing between BPMs but feel like I pulled it off pretty well. Got to DJ at a house party last night for a couple of hours, with about 30 people at its peak. Most people were hanging out at the balcony, where they could enjoy a gorgeous night with a cool sky to look at and everything.
