In the wake of the Boston bombing, my cousin's girlfriend posted something like "don't be scared, Boston, you're protected by magic".

Seriously? I mean, she's a sweet gal and I like her well enough but holy poo poo, gently caress off.

My first guess was something related to the Salem Witch Trials... Which still doesn't make any loving sense, considering they occurred a fair distance away from modern-day Boston.

Argh, I hate this notion that anyone can just show up and get benefits with no hassle. ou can't just come into the UK and be all like "Free money please". Most benefits need you to have lived in the UK to three years.

Also, I'm sure people in Romania who are so impoverished that they're seeking better lives abroad are really big on making international calls to 0845 numbers and waiting on hold for loving ages.

I'm sure I saw on the news that, in a survey of people in Bulgaria/Romania, most of the people aren't that bothered about coming to the UK. The again that was on the BBC and what do THEY know compared to The Daily Mail, newspaper of champions!

I haven't really got much on my Facebook at the moment. I did have a bit of an argument with an ARE GUNS nut though. She lives in America, I live in the UK. She said this:

ARE GUNS posted:

You are going to the land of leftist liberal talking points. The 2nd Amendment of the United States guarantees its citzens the right to keep and bear arms. GUARANTEES. What I find laughable is that you probably don't know 10 people who own a gun so you base your assumptions on what you hear, not what you see or know. I was raised with over 40 firearms in my home. My father was a collector, as was his father, as is my son....and literally hundreds of folks in my own personal life. They use them for hunting, for sport, but what they have never done is gone into ANYWHERE and hurt another human being. More people in this country are killed in stabbings. The majority of responsible gun owners should NOT be punished for the stupidity of a very few crazies with illegal guns. You, [me!], make my head hurt and I am so glad you live where you do. We The People have that second amendment right because we had to fight our way free of the tyranny of another country. YOURS. We are a REPUBLIC. WE THE PEOPLE think you the people are uninformed but highly opinionated.

Well, the only quantitative point she argues, that more people are killed by stabbings than by guns in the US, is atrociously, tremendously, utterly wrong. If you don't want to click through to the link, over 10,000 homicides were committed using firearms in the US in 2011 as compared to a little over 1,800 homicides from stabbing instruments.

You're about 20-30 years off. This is the generation who had parents in post-war Britain. I grew up in the 80s in the US - it wasn't that great. Paranoia over the Soviets, Ronald Reagan (Thatcher in Britain), New Kids on the Block... come to think of it, it wasn't all that different than now, we just had slightly different bogeymen.
