Don't forget there's still more Higurashi left after beating the main game: You've got the secret ending, and then Saikoroshi, which leads into Umineko pretty nicely.

E: I can't read, looks like you already know about the other ending. Hopefully at least you have better luck getting Saikoroshi to run than Ibram Gaunt did.

Thoughts on the beginning of the Akane route in Rewrite: Akane is a really weird character to reenact the plot of Heaven's Feel with, because she's such an openly terrible person; it makes Kotarou come across as more like Kuzuki than Shirou. It's strange because the Kotarou in the other routes was consistently a better person than that.

It's alright. The writing's pretty inconsistent and the story is dumb as hell, but it's reasonably entertaining? Some people really like it.

I can't even find a place to buy Higurashi Rei anywhere. I found a translation after a lot of digging, but it's useless without the actual game, and everything else just seems to be the anime which I don't think is the same thing. Is there a digital distribution thing that i'm missing somewhere, and if so do you have a link?

Sorta? DM has a true route, but the true route also has the "true husbando" which in this case is your sentient robo dog.

Yes, his hair has FEELINGS because he's the ultimate spesul snowflake. The robot dog thing is... complicated. True route spoilers on the off chance anyone cares: so basically your pet robot dog/iPhone turns out to be the vessel for one of your three split personalities––there's Aoba, Sly Blue (the bad personality) and Ren (the protector). Ren being the dogphone. How the dogphone got your split personality in the first place, I'm still not totally clear on because the mechanics of Aoba's stupid powers don't make much sense, but let's just go with INTERNET MAGIC to keep it short. So, your dogphone, Ren, has your split personality combined with the soul of a loving robot puppy.

In the true route you end up with him, ultimately culminating in the most ludicrous scenario for a sex scene: you're in the tower after you've confronted the final boss and go to save your mostly braindead twin brother (yes this plot is stupid and convoluted as gently caress), you have some brain-to-brain communication with your twin brother in magic internet space where Ren is also present (in human form). You reintegrate Sly into your personality and grant your twin brother's wish to kill him so he doesn't have to suffer, but while you're still in brain space you and Ren decide this is a great time to gently caress. And then Aoba cries ugly tears because he'll never be able to be with Ren 'this way' again and the language is always mad vague because Aoba can't say the words 'dick' or 'sex' ever, this probably doesn't hold for the translation but that's how it was in Japanese! Anyway, you leave magic internet space, escape the tower before it collapses and OH NO your robo-puppy-split-personality-sex-toy is reset to factory default and Aoba cries ugly tears again.

So then a few months later you get a ~mysterious phone call~ from a hospital saying they have your brother and you're like "hold up, my brother is dead I kille––" but you go check it out anyway and SURPRISE its your twin brother! But it quickly becomes apparent that it's not your brother in there, it's Ren! And now you can be together in meatspace with your dead twin brother's body! Nothing creepy about banging your split personality/robot dog in the body of your dead twin brother, who you personally killed, nope!

And that's DMMd for you.

Ibram Gaunt posted:

There is a 'true' route, but it's probably better to describe it as the unlock-able route or something. Arguably, it has the most to do with the 'plot' but the plot is dumb and the writers don't seem to give a gently caress about it in any of the other routes or making sure poo poo is consistent at all. Each of the routes is pretty wildly different and more focused on the target of your affections than the 'story'. imo Noiz's route was the best because you end up in more of an equal partnership with him and Aoba isn't a completely useless poo poo and he's actually taking a more active role in the sex scenes, also in his end Noiz cleans up, gets a high paying job, proposes to you and whisks you off to Germany which is a big step up for Aoba!

I bought my copy from AmiAmi years ago, but unfortunately it looks like it has sold out. Being that it was a doujin game released in late 2006, I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise that most to all of the copies have left circulation by this point.

So, yeah, I decided to go a bit off the beaten path and read Otoboku - Maidens Are Falling For Me. What a trainwreck.

So the basic idea is that a guy is forced to attend a women's academy, in drag. This leads to cutesy-wutesy Girls' Love hijinx, gags about cross-dressing, a fuckton of talking about "traditionally feminine" stuff like cooking and flower arrangement, and HARDCORE CHILD PORNOGRAPHY. That's basically it. There's very little drama or tension at any point, and mostly it's just hours and hours of school life with the occasional porn scene tossed in throughout the VN.

Not Good:
- Portrayal of girls and women in general
- Hardcore child pornography
- Tradional gender roles followed to a rather uncomfortable degree
- Utter lack of real drama or tension
- Fetishization of things that should not be fetishized: Schoolgirls, little girls, sisters, ghosts, sick girls, institutionalized sexism and abuse of power.
- Hardcore. Child. Pornography.
- There was little point to the main character even being a guy, as he got into the role so fast.
- Just boring, overall
- The skip function doesn't work properly with the later shared scenes between routes, so here's hoping you enjoy reading about lunch and video rentals!

Okay:
+ The main character wasn't utterly incompetent, even if this was just so that he would be better than all the girls at everything, including being a girl. This is actually something of an issue in Otoboku and makes me pretty uncomfortable. It boils down to the portrayal of women and gender roles again.
+ Some of the jokes were decent
+ I was entertained by how absurd and terrible the VN was, at least for the first few routes.
+ I did learn a few things about making chocolate.
+ Takako's route was fun, I guess?
+ Without the porn, this would have been just a run-of-the-mill gender-bender thing.

So you hit the hardcore child pornography and decided to keep playing for a few routes?

Okay, it isn't quite as bad as I might have implied. There's only a 2-year age difference, and sex between an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old wouldn't that big a deal, if it wasn't for how said people are portrayed. It's more about the roles and the art.

The freshmen look and act like nine-year-olds and worship the mature seniors as some sort of demigods. It's really, really uncomfortable.

Yep, it's very nice to look at, the interface is slick as gently caress and the music is great. The art's really polished but don't look too closely at the CGs or you'll notice horrific proportion problems that your brain will gloss over if you're not paying too much attention, but then once you notice it all you can think is OH MY GOD HIS HAND IS LIKE THE SIZE OF AOBA'S TORSO. I'd say it's worth giving it a shot. It's nothing particularly outstanding story or writing-wise, but it's pretty entertaining especially if you enjoy laughing at how absurd some of the scenarios get and the porn's pretty minimal really, most of it is one scene at the end of each route (with the exception of Mink's route I guess). And at least all the characters are actually adults (the one thing BL games seem to do right most of the time).

On a different note: I played through some of Uta no Prince-sama All Star this week. You get to date the Quartet★Night guys and the teachers in this one. I've only gotten through Camus' route so far, but it was pretty fun. It seems like they let you make Haruka a little feistier than usual in this one––but not much really, even though it often gives you the option to say something assertive, Haruka usually backtracks immediately. I guess it's better than nothing. The story was predictably insane, being UtaPri and all (it turns out that Camus has literal ice magic powers among other things).

The music is pretty nice, even though I still can't get the hang of the rhythm mini-games (can't get used to the controls). Oh and Camus didn't at any point try to sexually assault Haruka which was shocking (I mean it would have been painfully out of character for him, but it's an otome game). Though he did threaten to kill her in cold blood for overhearing a super SERIOUS phone call unless she became his live-in housekeeper. The best part was definitely at the end when Camus asks Haruka to give him a special name (which had something to do with the bullshit magical ice country he's from), and she decides on Cryzzard because his eyes are like crystals and he's intense like a blizzard. And that scene was 100% serious. I can only hope that will make it into the second season of the anime (unlikely but whatever).

Noiz gets better. He's the obligatory tsundere, so right now he's still pretty tsun. You guys bro-fight it out later. While Mink consistently gets more poo poo done in general, relationship-wise he only gets worse, what with the repeated beatings and rape and all.
