It's waaaaaaaay too late to get angry about Mobage having a Final Fantasy license, did you miss the one they already have? In an already crowded field of lovely card games they managed to turn out the worst so far. I freely include in that list the pirate porn release, FF card game was worse!

Out of the 8 zillion pokemonish-card type games theres maybe 3 worth a look, Fantasica, Blood Brothers & Defender of Texel. Rage of Bahamut or Marvel enthusiasts might disagree, I was disappointed to see how high up the top grossing list the Marvel game was.

I suppose that there is a market for brainless dogshit games but there is also a market for reality tv. I'm not going to accept the premise that monetary gain potential signifies a "good" game.

You're posting in a thread full of people who like that kind of stuff. It's not worth arguing. People like different poo poo than you. Yeah they're probably dumb but you're not going to fix that by yelling at them on the internet. At some point you just have to accept that you are no longer the target audience for your old favorite gaming platforms and get on with your life.

Speaking of awesome games which sink overlooked into the app store, I'm pretty sure Forget Me Not must qualify since I never see it mentioned around here. It's like a bonkers rogue-like Pac-Man with all sorts of mechanics which gel together shockingly well. You can find some videos and a less-fully-featured-but-free Windows version here! I love it! It's really good! Check it out!

It's not as simple as liking different poo poo than other people. It's about not liking something AND taking it as far as considering the App Store a failure because the thing you don't like is hugely successful.

I don't like Call of Duty games or online multiplayer shooters. However, I don't think the state of FPS gaming or PC Gaming in general is poo poo because I don't like those things.

I'd argue more but the mouse that just moved into my Happy Street needs me to craft him an iron rod.

You couldn't have chosen a better example of how a game can negatively affect game development than CoD. I'm not going to say that there aren't things about it that are intriguing, but for the most part, CoD's runaway maddening success has caused stagnation in its particular genre. It's a simple system that for a while became a sure-fire way to make money and because of the fact that games are big business now games started adding those kinds of systems willy-nilly without regards to whether they were any kind of value to the rest of the game.

Now take a look at the way the iOS store is polluted with systems that effectively ruin what might have been a perfectly fun game that all use the same system that Farmville used when it make all of its money. Game development will stagnate if there is no incentive for innovation. If good games get lost in the shuffle of the zeitgeist (and the garbage app store) then people will resort to the tried and true methods to feed themselves.

Bad team for bad people.
Otherwise, correct.

Also, I think the main issue with it is that the app store shows no regard for separating types of games in any meaningful way. Theres basically no distinction between action and adventure and the things that get listed in rpg are insane. I love longer-winded games myself and while I have a few simple time wasters I don't have much patience for the repetition of many of them.
I wish they'd reflect on this and actually separate out new relatively genres like infinite runners from other action games for instance.

I personally think the touch screen as a medium is fantastic for adventure/puzzle games and I've absolutely adored things like Year Walk and S+S EP (and really looking forward to the sequel to The Room). It's a little disappointing that the store is so saturated with what are basically mobile phone games.

Bought Crabitron now that it's discounted. I hope more people will buy it now that it's cheaper - from what I read in this thread I was already convinced it's probably a lot of fun, but I never play games on the iPad enough to warrant the bigger price tag. This view is obviously skewed by the prevailing market conditions on the App Store, but there you go.

The problem with the mobile gaming is that is small, divided, restrictive, and over-saturated.

iOS and android gaming market make about 1.9 billion dollars a year. Compared the the 78 billion of the total gaming market that is pretty small. Then look at who uses the market. Children, casual gamers and gross nerds (that's us!). Children have no money, so getting free games is no brainier for them. When they are hooked then they will beg for a gift card for all the IAP. Casual gamers don't really want full games. Words with friends and scrabble are easy to pick up and play with friends. More complex games (not better just complex) can be frustrating to play if you haven't already sunken a lifetime into video games. A lot of people don't want to invest the time to be good at virtual controls. For example here is what Paul McCartney said to someone about Beatles rockband. "Oh, cool. I bet you’re better at it than I am. My grandkids always beat me at Rock Band. And I say, Listen, you may beat me at Rock Band, but I made the original records, so shut up".

So that brings us to gross nerd (hello). Some of you want a complex gaming experience with no IAP. Some of you don't. It is pretty safe to say that of those of you that want the complex gaming, you also have a computer and/or game console. So for a developer that wants to make a complex game, it is a safer bet to just make something for the computer and try to get it on steam than deal with the iOS market. Which means jumping through apple's lovely hoops, making different resolutions, force to deal with their programming language, dealing with their lovely market, and paying 99 dollars a year.

Then think of how many apps come out each day. It is figurative flood of apps. If you don't get some good reviews, give the game away for free, be famous, or pay for marketing then you can expect poor sales.

This has lead to the creation of free game with pay walls. This game tend to be pretty shallow and incomplete, they can be pumped out quickly and relatively cheap. but as their income increases they can afford to make more complex games or complete the ones they have already made. Like or not these games make sense for the iOS market.

I agree with most everything Shwqa is saying but I would replace the idea of complexity with depth. There is no incentive for people to create deep games on iOS, they get overwhelmed by cow-clickerkin and lose money. I sure do value the hell out of those that try though. There is so much goddamn potential. I hope it's realized before the bubble bursts.

The biggest issue with iOS gaming is people thinking about it. It's a market of free time killers and a bunch of somewhat deep games around the price it takes to burg out at McDonald's. Take a poo poo, play what you want, move on. It really doesn't matter and the beauty of mobile gaming is the lack of commitment it takes to stay involved. Oh god I broke the first rule of poop club.

Because trends are interesting to me. I'm trying to explain why developers seem to moving over to free to pay model. And why consumers seem to be flocking to these games despite this costing them more money that paying 5 dollars for crabs.

For many of us we grew up paying "large" ($50+) amounts of money for a game. But we got that game it was relatively complete and the game was based around a natural progression of player skill or time invested. Now we got game that are free to pay, but there are timers and progression is much different. To some is a downgrade, to others it is not a big deal. But what is important is it seem to be the primary sales to mobile gaming. I'm trying to answer why that is.

The thing is that people are moving over to smart phones and tablet in place of computers. I know a lot of people where there iPhone is their only source of Internet. So at what point do we say that this market is not important and only for pooping game or the future of entertainment?
