Miyamotos RGB NES posted:Is this really true? That leaving game consoles plugged in when not used uses a lot of electricity? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_adapter Some choice Wikipedia bullet-points Wikipedia says posted:"Inefficiency — Some idling power is wasted as the power supply is left running when the equipment power switch is off or the equipment is disconnected from the power supply. In recent years it has become common for equipment with internal supplies to share this problem due to the use of a "soft" power switch." The newer power supplies have markings like IV or V to denote their energy star rating. You can pretty much tell if it's an efficient model if it weighs next to nothing and rarely gets hot, especially if disconnected from the power drawing device. From the physical size of these all-in-one supplies I imagine they're the efficient type, but even if they aren't it beats having three highly inefficient supplies plugged in. I'm weirdly protective of my electrical bill, so these things probably don't matter as much to other people...

Miyamotos RGB NES posted:Is this really true? That leaving game consoles plugged in when not used uses a lot of electricity? It's not like a ton of power or anything but if you have a bunch of retro bricks plugged in you're probably looking at something like 20-60W overall. The old wall-warts are linear power supplies so they have large transformers first that dissipate relatively large amounts of current as waste heat. Even while a load is connected they aren't particularly efficient and still waste at least as much (but at least you're using the actual current). Modern-style switching power supplies are usually substantially more efficient, and the much smaller transformer leads to much smaller losses due to resistance. There's no getting around waste if it's plugged in, but typically it's around a factor of 10 difference compared to linear supplies.

Also because I'm a huge weenie about electrical waste in the home and because I hate gaudy lights on products (seriously, I electrical tape over or cut the LEDs out of just about every device I own to cut down on light pollution) this device is my best friend-- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005MYN3OO/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 It provides a cut off switch, and forces me to remember to flip it off by giving a stupidly large amount of green light when it's switched on, causing me to switch it off in a fit of rage when I'm done using it. Perfect for those extended times of leaving my SNES or similar console connected to the mains. I also like protecting my old power supplies because if they're plugged in, they're getting used and abused whether I'm gaming or not.

Hey, just wanted to interrupt today's RGB video discussion to talk about an actual old video game- Atomic Runner (AKA Chelnov) for the Genesis. A simple, fast, arcade action game. What the Genesis was all about. You can buy it for less than $5, and if that doesn't sell you, Arino played it. Okay- back to power supplies and SCART cables!

Had a busy day finding retro goodies today. First off, I stopped at one of the local retro shops after grabbing groceries and actually found stuff in their 5-for-$5 bin for once. I was very much surprised to see a Treasure game I've never heard of (Stretch Panic). Also during my spring cleaning session and while hauling 100 pounds of crap out of my room, I found this thing tucked back in the closet... a mini Donkey Kong arcade game box. There might even be an actual game in it! Sadly, time has not been kind to the box itself... The actual unit itself is much more intact, but not by much. The front label around the controls has fallen off and the stickers on the sides and top are scuffed up and starting to peel. The actual screen and sticker around it are still in really nice condition though. One last oddity found with the Donkey Kong game, some kind of C battery attached to an AC adapter and with a 4-way prong. I'm eager to get a full set of batteries and see if the game still works.

The hood is extremely fragile. Also, Stretch Panic is a really weird game. I like the idea but I found the execution a bit too rough.

kirbysuperstar posted:Yeah, it looks pretty good. I think I can just put my mind in the "It's a game inspired by Earthbound/Zelda/cocaine!" mindset and be pretty much fine. I found the full game really easy (and I never fought anything outside of what I'd consider a normal route to level up). In RPGs like Mother 3 you have to utilize all the status moves/shields and all that. I'm not at all interested in an unofficial sequel of the game.

Finished Gargoyle's Quest 2. Through and through, it feels very bare. Like Capcom had a bunch of other stuff on its mind at the time and couldn't bother to really flesh it out. There's not a lot of quest to this quest. Need the Thingamajig of Moderate Evil? Oh, that's at the end of this very straightforward dungeon. No need to go searching, really, it's right at the end and there aren't any other areas you need to explore or sub bosses or sidequests or interesting NPCs or anything. Everything progress so linearly that it might as well be a side scroller.

Instead of providing an adaptive difficulty level, though, it just makes grinding a disadvantage and lets you game the hell out of the system if you know what you're doing. It was really frustrating as a kid, though- I didn't know why gaining levels wasn't helping me Actually I'm pretty sure it only scales based on Squall's level, so your best option is to leave him dead the entire game.

No, it's the average of all playable characters minus Edea and Siefer. Everyone must avoid experience. When one of these two is around they can be a EXP sponge for a dead team. Stretch panic is bizarre and owns. "Bizarre" gets thrown around a lot with weird games but this one is just out there.

So, today while I was running errands, I decided to stop by one of the stores in my town that sells retro games (it's not a thrift store, but also not a dedicated game store either since they sell other stuff like bags of Tide detergent ). While it's not a huge haul, I think definitely scored. The Wrecking Crew cart was $2 and RCR was $4. I dunno how they decide to price their games, but I'm really loving them for it since I've gotten other great deals on games I never thought I'd get for cheap from them.

Is there any interest for M<->M Euro SCART to RGB-21 cables? I was going to order a few and cut them up for myself and re-seal them with heatshrink, but could sell a few of the extras to goonz if people would want them. I was just gonna follow the basic scheme here, without resistors or anything, unless I should add those too: http://gamesx.com/wiki/doku.php?id=av:scart2rgb Can you do sync stripping by just rewriting or does it require adding a tiny LM1881 Bing the Noize fucked around with this message at 07:19 on Apr 27, 2013 |

A coworker and I have been trying to figure this out - its got Roger Dean, it's got a very Psygnosis logo (which, I guess means a very Roger Dean logo) but its made by BPS software, (varyingly Bullet Proof Software or Blue Planet Software) which doesn't seem to have any real link to Psygnosis. I think the cover art is actually called Freyjas Castle - so if it wasn't made for Black Onyx I guess it could be a Roger Dean inspired game?

My thoughts as well because it was an MSX game before then. It's also not the first time an 80s Japanese company straight up stole a piece of art for their game. Curious enough, it's not so much that the game is in English (all the menu stuff is) but that there's practically no dialog at all. Everything is handled via emoticons. It truly is a language independent game as long as you know enough English to read the menu.
