Can anyone recommend soundtracks that sound like this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_oAGptbBsU I'm looking for stuff to listen to with headphones while I work with a microscope. The reason I ask here is because I want stuff that doesn't have any grandiosity to it, no big horn blasts or major shifts in tone and volume.

The sound I'm looking for is the Alice In Chains album Dirt. I listen to that entire album at work and it helps me drown out everything and just work. Not even sure where to start with this, but for the first band, Brainiac springs to mind: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVll2jYBxdQ Bonsai Superstar and Hissing Prigs in Static Couture are both pretty out-there albums. Deerhoof also crosses my mind. As for the jazz, John Zorn is quite eccentric (check out Naked City); I think he's done some noir-y stuff, too. I could go on and on (and on and on and on), but I'm not sure it'd be stuff you're into or don't already know about. e: I picked up a copy of the Missa Luba at Goodwill the other day, played it, and then spent the rest of the afternoon jamming African drum music on YouTube. Other than Fela Kuti--and Babatunde Olatunji, who I discovered the other day--this genre is a dark continent (get it?) to me. Anybody know where to start with it? Here is a helpful, hopefully-not-too-overwhelming chart. e: All post-Illmatic albums tend to be compared to Illmatic by fans, which makes them seem disappointing in comparison. I don't think it's entirely fair to expect anyone to top Illmatic--not even Nas himself--but still, nothing tops it. That being said, Nas is Nas, and will always be, so he's a talented MC on all his records (although some argue that Nastradamus is a lovely album). izationalizer fucked around with this message at 20:06 on May 6, 2013 |

If you want epic trailer music, then really the best place to find it is production library tracks. The first one linked came from the KPM library. You can stream the tracks from MyAPM, but unfortunately you can't download any of the tracks. To hear more from the library that tune comes from, go to "Advanced Search" on the left, and select Library Code "KPM" and disc number 792. You can find a bunch of random production library tracks all over the place, but I'll give shoutouts to the people at AudioNetwork for being really awesome people and allowing cheap downloads (it's $1.25 a track to download for personal use). Additionally, X-Ray Dog is a thing specifically set up to record and distribute trailer music, whether it be epic or comedy or horror or whatever. It's supposed to be under special order only, but it turns out the old version of EMI's PLAY production music site has all of that available for streaming. Also go and check out ExtremeMusic, as it seems like they'd have some of that genre as well.

I'm an EFL teacher in Taiwan and I have to write a performance for 23 Taiwanese 6-year-olds to sing. The theme is seasons, and the way my script is I really want the song for winter to be some kind of "cool" pun. Is there an age-appropriate, preferably wintry-sounding song that a bunch of non-native-speaking 6-year-olds could conceivably learn that revolves around a "cool" pun? Worse comes to worst I'll just toss a Christmas song in there, but I really would like to nail this one.

Hey guys, I need a little help identifying a genre, or finding similar music at least It's kind of a nerdy source, but I absolutely love the soundtrack to the indie video game Bastion (check it out, it's fantastic: http://supergiantgames.bandcamp.com/) and I want to find more music like it. The artist identifies is as "acoustic frontier trip hop" which I'd agree with totally, but searching along those terms hasn't proved too fruitful. I don't know what else to call it though. Sad cowboy neo-blues? Ambient western with hits of something like Morricone? At any rate I recommend the soundtrack to anyone and everyone. The game is really fun too, and both are super cheap.

Texibus posted:I've been getting back into old R&B and Soul music, and I'd love some recommendations on people with sounds like Otis Redding, Al Green, Charles bradley. Eight words, a number, a hyphen and a comma (and apologies if you already know about it, just had to mention it either way): Sam Cooke - Live at the Harlem Square Club, 1963 That album literally moves me to tears, especially the rendition of "Bring It on Home to Me." But don't listen to "Bring It on Home to Me" in isolation! No spoilers! Start from the beginning, and let the soul power slowly build up like it's supposed to. In any case, Sam Cooke sounds waaay better there than on his studio cuts. Tougher, grittier, and just plain soul-ier. A guy from Allmusic wrote: "It's one of the greatest soul records ever cut by anybody, outshining James Brown's first live album from the Apollo Theater and easily outclassing Jackie Wilson's live record from the Copa." That's right: He said it was better than James Brown's Live at the loving Apollo Vol. 1. And you know what? I agree, although only by the tiniest smidgen (both albums are essential, of course). Also, just 'cause, here's a song I like (that bass!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uinjc0x0GGE izationalizer fucked around with this message at 18:30 on May 10, 2013 |

No. Before & After Science is his last rock album, so you'd have to look at one before that. They're all slightly different, they've all got different themes, so it's difficult to compare, but Another Green World might be your best bet: Taking Tiger Mountain.. you've mentioned, and Here Come the Warm Jets is straight ahead rock. Down by the River is with Cluster, so Cluster & Eno would be worth a listen, but the album is wordless. Try Rock Bottom or Cuckooland by Robert Wyatt for something similar?

My favorite album in the entire world is the Tron Legacy soundtrack. Sweeping, but still technical, and it thinks highly of itself when appropriate. I am also doing well with Daft Punk's newest album (RAM), but I didn't like too much of Human After All except for the titular track (which I love to death and can listen to on repeat for hours doing something else). Anything like that? On the flipside, my second favorite album (and musical/story style) is Beethoven's Last Night by Trans-Siberian Orchestra (rock opera and neo-classical? gently caress yes), and I've been suggested Dream Theater's Metropolis Pt 2 Scenes from a Memory, which was okay, but didn't have the awesome classical overtones and remixes TSO had. "TSO"'s new album Night Castle was godawful. Queen_Combat fucked around with this message at 10:56 on May 14, 2013 |
