If my cat needs something, and I'm asleep, he will come and sit on my chest and stare at me until I wake up. Now I'm just imagining waking up seeing this inches away from my face: To counteract that, here are two free funny pictures.

Lucy Heartfilia posted:Glow in the dark animals! I actually do this kind of research, although we are working only with the tiny part of the protein responsible for the fluorescence (the chromophore). I make synthetic variants of the chromophore, which can be used in a large variety of applications including, but not limited to, protein sensing within mammals (glow in the dark cancer cells, for example) or OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes). Maybe later I'll post some cool pictures of the fluorescent powders.

toanoradian posted:It's definitely real, it's just that the fluorescence is quenched by the darker fur. The context of the picture is to test a way for injecting foreign gene (the GFP) into cats that doesn't involve cloning. It's successful and it may lead to a possible treatment for AIDS (which is also a pandemic for cats) by injecting genes that restricts the virus. Of course, using cats instead of the usual rats have its drawbacks. Is one of those drawbacks having to kill thousands of kittens? because in any rat lab theres a person whose job it is to kill all the rats they're done with, either by gassing them (only if there's enough at once), pulling their tail quickly to break their spine, or just good old scissors. I can't see any lab getting permission to send GMO organisms into animal shelters or loving homes either, so yeah I am definitely imagining huge crates of tiny sad glowing dead kittens right now.
