GFP = green flourescent protein is found in jelly fish and scientists like to put this gene into animals together with other genes. If the animal starts glowing in the dark it probably means not only the GFP but also the other genes have been integrated into the animals genome successfully.

There are many variants of GFP that can glow in different colors like YFP (yellow flourescent protein) or RFP (red flourescent protein).

Here are some bacteria expressing the different flourescing proteins:

I actually do this kind of research, although we are working only with the tiny part of the protein responsible for the fluorescence (the chromophore). I make synthetic variants of the chromophore, which can be used in a large variety of applications including, but not limited to, protein sensing within mammals (glow in the dark cancer cells, for example) or OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes). Maybe later I'll post some cool pictures of the fluorescent powders.

The connections are hand-assembled. Clearly they didn't waste their time with any of those jack-of-all-trades "cable craftsmen". You need specialists for every component if you want to do this right.

I was looking for some picture i think was from old thread, or something that listed audio cables for like $5,0000 because they had diamond dust and poo poo. Couldnt find the picture on the interwebs, but i found this instead, which is equally hilarious.
